It varies depending on which kit you go for and who you get it from.
I'm not giving that away, but i think they look as good if not better than the CSL's.Just need to find a new owner for them now.
-
no no no no you cant start a thread and not tell.. your as bad as Jake !!!!
So are you going to be smashing your sills next years then going 'proper' slammed ??
-
What air have you gone for Patch?
-
Air Lift
-
Sweet from a UK supplier or Direct from AL?
-
Bag Riders in the US
-
What kit have you gone for then? Analogue or digital?
-

Neither
After viewing a few different cars and having fitted a few air kits, the one that stood out to me for ease of use and controllability was the manual kit that Baz has on his.
So the same set up as his but with the new XL struts.
-
Looks like a good kit. :afro: Will you get stung at Customs?
-
Yep
-
Damn, never mind
Bet you can't wait, think you should keep tue CSls until air is fitted then get rid ;)

No,i can't wait still waiting for them to send it out........................................
The csl's wouldn't have worked when the car is fully aired out,so it's time to try something new(or old).
Anyway,the kit

-
looks expensive, im guessing it cost more than i paid for my whole car
what kind of clearance are you expecting when its fitted? rolling on the rim?
-
Not as costly as you may think,i bought everything in that pic except the compressor and tank + the rear bags for £450 shipped, the front shocks will be a further £500 shipped and then whatever import duty i get stung for.
I'm hoping to be sat as flush as possible when down, should work out the same as Pats car to the mm once they have been widened.

I'll be at most major show's next year and will be at the summer RR event @ Rtech.
Fitting might cost me a few BSE butties to keep Pat going,in all serious though if you can fit suspension and wire a plug, you can fit air.
-
its one of them things that probably looks worse than it is.. maybe one day i will have air.. maybe put air on my mk2 lool
-
Welding required?
-
Not on these.
-
mmm BSE butties
-
I'll just pop over if Patch is paying for Butties
-
Only if you fit the rear bags.
-
I'll fit bags to the rears. May only be carrier Bags but least you'll have some sort of bag fitted.
-
Will be awesome when fitted

are these falken fk452? if they are, how will you rate them patch as I'm planning to get these as well
-
The tyres were bought for their tyre wall tendency to stretch, not for their performance traits.
All in all not a bad tyre for the money, decent grip in the dry but not the greatest performer in the wet, although i'm not convinced a more expensive tyre would spin less in the wet.

me neither, my car skidded today on wet road at roundabout at 20MPH, thankfully there were no cars behind or on side otherwise there must have been exchange of insurance details :lipsrsealed:
-
The new owner of the csl's is collecting them in the morning and my new wheels have been ordered, can't wait for winter to be over now.
-
look forward to seeing what rims your getting mate.
Im running Falken 452's aswell, good overall tyre for a premium tyre. quiet hard wearing, so still get spin up in dry conditions, good traction in wet but when the snow came i dont think any tyre would have been any good, took a roundabout sideways in the golf
-
Looking forward to updates Patch!

-
B*tches <3 switches.
-

-
new switchs pat ??
First things first,i'm called Adam,Pats my buddy with the image wheels on his mk4.
Those switch's control the air in and out of each bag, still waiting for my front shocks before i install anything.
-

Could I ask a question, how do you know if the car is level or you have put the same amount of air in.
Sorry if this seems a thick question.
-
Ok Adam.. they look pretty swish..
I guess it just distributes the air evenly into the bags ??
-
I have two gauges with twin needles to show how much pressure is in each bag,i'll have to set the car at a ride height that i'm happy with and remember where the needles sit.Once the car has been aired out(on the floor) i can just use the switch and watch the gauge untill i reach the required pressure again.
-
can you not preset heights ??
-
Not with a manual kit, you'll need a digital kit £££
-
Not with this system, untill recently all air suspension was controlled this way.Only with the fancy digital management can you do that.
It's not hard to remember what pressure looks good and only takes a few seconds to set the whole car up.
-
whats it gona drive like Ad ??
-
The same as coilies,no difference.
With the two way systems air can be pushed from one bag to another when cornering, but with the four way set up,each bag has an independent air supply so can't be moved around while cornering.
-
so its gona be pretty firm then lol
-
The barmy thing is no,the lower you go the comfier it will be
When raised right up the ride will be rock hard.
-
I take it because theres less air in the bags so more movement.. didnt tihnk of it like that so they are more practical than i once thought ??
-
Correct.
It'll be the most practical mod i ever do to my car.
I can ride around as low as i like, then if i come across a road full of speed bumps or a multi-story car park etc.....a quick press of the switches will raise me up to clear them. It's also good if your carrying a few passengers and the tyres scrub, just add more pressure to raise it back up again
-
might mention this 'practical' mod to the other half lool..
Out of curiosity how long does your tank take to refill ??
-
It'll take a few minutes if completely empty, but that doesn't happen very often. There is a pressure sender on the tank which will keep the tank at 150psi,if you raise and lower a few times this will lower the pressure in the tank and the compressor will kick in to top it back up to 150psi.
-
oh right cool.. Is there many common faults with air leaky bags or such ??
-
oh right cool.. Is there many common faults with air leaky bags or such ??
A little leakage overnight is expected, but we're only talking a few psi.
It also doubles as a security device,if you drop it down at night both your car and wheels are going nowhere
-
oh right thats fair enough.. Have your wheels turned up yet ??
-
Should be with me by Friday
-
will we have a teaser piccy ??
-
Not sure yet,i might just wait for the better weather and stick them on before any pics are taken.
-
Interesting read
Ive just learnt loads about "Air"
-
so did i thats why i asked
-
It also has the added bonus of not needing a jack to change a wheel
-
i take it thats jumping yer ??
-
They don't jump like hydraulics.
You can only lift the rear wheels like that though.
-
how does it manage that tho lol ??
-
Inflate opposite corners and let all the air out of the other two,the weight of the engine will lift the back corner up.Just a pivot point.
-
Interesting read

Here's a diagram to show just how simple it is
-
Not much to it on paper! Hope it's all good when it's complete
-
I wouldn't know where to start with it! Where does the main tank go?
Top stuff though i would love to see how it works for real at a show this year - im not sure which ones im going to yet
-
Tank goes in the boot,as this car is used every day i'll be keeping the spare wheel.I'll make a false floor and make a cut out where the spare wheel is,then the tank will be on the passenger side of the boot.

Hoping to get a DIY guide done when i fit it all,it's getting more and more popular so i think it's about time there was a DIY guide to help people out.

Very true :afro:

How so the air lines get from inside the car to the outside?
-
looking at the pic its a simple job, its just making the job look tidy
-
this is a lovely install...

-
does look nice.. cant say ive really seen a bad install lol.. only installs i see are at shows and all are show car quality lol
-
Mine won't be anything like that, hoping to box it all in out of view.Should just look like a carpeted box on on one side of the boot, that way i can still through stuff in the boot and not have to worry about air lines being snagged etc.......
-
is this your daily ad ??
-
Yep,the work horse does over 250 miles per week.
-
nice thought it might just be a show car..
-

-
looks like top work mate is this all going to be boxed in or ??
Is someone a happy boy its finally all happening ??
-
Time consuming,it's the longest we've ever spent fitting air but everything has been done as it should,no cutting corners on this one.Two days work so far,but we now have the rears fitted.
It wasn't untill i saw the car drop at the rear that i thought YES,with the new wheels it's going to be the big change that i said it would be :smug:
-
nice nice we expect vids uploaded as per course.. will it be long left or are the fronts quicker ??
-
Still waiting for delivery of the fronts, but they should be with me in the next few days. All the hard work is pretty much done, the fronts are just a case of swapping the shocks over and plumbing in the air line.
The wheels have been a hassle, but the rears along with my custom 13mm adaptors have been completed, should have kept the csl's the amount of money it's taken but hey ho it should look good and be a one off.
-
so are the wheels now ready with rubber and adaptors or you waiting on front adaptors ??
-
so are the wheels now ready with rubber and adaptors or you waiting on front adaptors ??
No,the wheels are 5X120 so using my current adaptors, but to get the rears to sit how i want them it required loosing 3mm off the offset.I had planned to have 3mm machined of the back of the rear wheels, but due to the spoke design it wasn't possible,a solution had to be found fast. The idea came up about taking 3mm off the adaptor but this would leave the bolts that hold them to the hub sitting proud 3mm(they can't be chopped down, for head strength),so it was decided that we should make little pockets in the back of the wheels to accommodate the bolts.Got the call earlier to say that they are finished.Rubber is here, just needs fitting.
-
bloody hell thats a lot of work.. hope its all worth it in the end mate..
-
Tell me about it,it's crazy when i think about it
-
bet the bills looking crazy now as well lol budgets out the window lol
-
Looking forward to seeing pics of the wheels fitted.

-
bet the bills looking crazy now as well lol budgets out the window lol
It was a a little more expensive that i first worked it all to be,but nothing too crazy.Messing with my car is my hobby,i don't follow a football team or piss my money up a wall/smoke/take drugs,so it's not that bad when i think about it.

just a quick q to show how dumb i am, but when your that low do you have any bother with your sump grounding out? everytime i read pvw there seems to be at least one mention of a smashed sump in there
-
yer you do so you upgrade to shallow sumps and such.. not just sumps but sills get mashed aswell if not carefull..
-

I'd say its a good move, why would you want a golf which is an everyday car that you see so many off on the road especially the mk4, since the price off the mk4 is plummeting even I'm tempted to buy something new and just strip and track the golf since of it's value.
Secretly I'd like one of them cars myself, but I'm getting old and grumpy
-
Still looks better now than it did when you got it

Yes and no, on a mk4 a FMIC stands out like a sore thumb, but without the FMIC I wouldn't have guessed.
