Title: scratch/chip repair and full detail

as some of you know my mk3 has some scratches down the sides so i ordered some touch up from lupogtiboy :emthup: last month and set to work on these scratches and chips on the bonnet and wings

first port of call was to prep the scratches and clean the many layers of sealant and wax that its had put on it in the last 2 years.

preping!!! DONE

now for the paint, mystic blue pearl:)

i then filled the scratches with the paint,

once done i used a hairdryer to bake the paint on.
next stage was to flaten the paint down with some wet and dry 1200grit on a 3m finesse-it hand sanding pad and some prima quick detailer for lubrication

paint is now flush with the body,
next stage:
rotary mop with red soft mop head, autosmart evo fine compound

with the scratches mopped back smooth again i then applyed some ez creme glaze

in comparison to the original paint how much does the scratch show up now... would you notice it if you weren't looking for it for example?

only slightly but you have to look at certain angles, its by no means perfect, unfortunatly the paint doesnt match exactly as the origanal paint is older but it does look good in the flesh, standing beside it now you cant see the scratches which is a result for me,well the next person who owns it anyway lol

no! just got it super smooth and have protected it with good quality glaze, sealant and wax,

Nicely done there,
I am in the process of doing my scratches and stone chips will post pics up when finished.

I will be laquering then sanding so we can see if theres any difference to a good polish and wax.

That is realy impressive, I would be realy happy with a finish like that but I do get a bit worried about the thought of wet sanding the paint work  :undecided:

If I tried it I'd be shagged, so plan is to try a test panel first and see (like a scrap wing or something).

I've got a scratch on the kick panel that is too bad to polish out so I may try wetsanding that bit as it only shows when the passenger door's open  :undecided:

Fantastic to use, and you can polish out the scratches by hand using a good compound :wink:

Looks well mate, your eye's not drawn to them which means the buyer may not notice, I've taken tips for my flash red mk3! Good luck with the sale!

that looks awesome! I have a rust bubble, lacquer scratch, and a big bit of rust round the filler cap. im deffo going to have a go at the scratch and rust bubble on the door though.
All those polishes and waxes look expensive though? any reccomendations on what polishes and waxes i should buy?

For hand application I'd use Mezerna Intenstive Polish and then finish with Meguiars #80 or a fine finishing polish.
These will bring out 2000/3000 wet & dry sand marks.

good result there Dan, just showed it to my mate who does panel beating & spraying for a living and his words were "fook me he did that with a sh!t stick and a polisher, good job" :grin:

I have a couple of deep scratches on the rear door above the window. would it be possible for me to use the above method but without the machine polish and just do it by hand?

firstly i would say only attempt this if you are confident about wet sanding and understand fully the methods involved as you could end up doing more damage,

no you really need a rotory or a DA to buff out the sanding marks,i had to do several passes with the rotory to get the finish i wanted, you'll be there forever trying to do it by hand.

my advise would be get someone to do it for you if you havent got all the necessary equipment.

ok cool, my mate runs a body shop so i can access the equipment anyway. I have wet sanded before so that isn't a problem. I will probably just get it to that stage and get him to give it a full mop for me.

i used 1500 grit to rub the paint down that id filled the scratches in with, but you could go for 2000 as it would be less aggressive and slightly easier to buff out, if you can....leave the paint to harden for as long as possible so you dont strip it out of the scratch when your mate buffs it.

lol yer it was a bit of a mission but a mission well worth the effort tbh, it looked nasty before i done it and stuck out even more when it was fully prept so i bit the bullet and went for it and would do it all over again if it was needed.
