here's one i bookmarked earlier

http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=1980960

I paid a local garage to do mine as they have special tools to pop the bushes in and out, eg not a hammer and g clamp like in the guide.

if you're replacing them, the Leon Cupra R bushes are the ones to go for.

hadn't heard of the vRS bushes being used in the MK4, so just checked ETKA and a quick read through http://uk-mkivs.net/forums/t/254751.aspx

and as I suspected different part numbers, but from the looks of it a very similar part, probably a slightly firmer rubber in the LCR given that the LCR is heavier than the vRS

standard MK4 bush;
1J0 501 541 C

vRS bush part number;
6Q0 501 541 E

LCR bush;
1ML 501 541

Chaps... I need to replace my rear axle bushes and have been told that the vRS will fit my vehicle on a number of forums. However, when I contacted AVS - vwspares, they stated that on my particular model, the rear axle bushes are 69mm ones and not the vRS type which are 72mm ones. Can anyone confirm whether the vRS ones will definitely fit or not... thanks

Sidney69 - Isn't your car an ASZ? if so it is 04/2001 onwards and the only bush listed is the 1J0 501 541 C in ETKA which is this one (http://www.vwspares.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=186) on VWSPARES (http://www.vwspares.co.uk/g4suspension_rear.php) which is 72mm so the Fabia one will fit :afro:

Are you sure that was me ? :huh: but there again I may have been having a senior moment  :undecided:  :grin:

But a good idea, if we got a list of recomended body work repairers etc.. the only think with chips away is if you get the right man they are great but others are just cr@p and you can't always gurantee which one you get

Can I ask about the TT wishbone bushes here? My garage says they wont fit my car as the early mk4s had different angles in the suspension but it seems a bit weird to me.

Post by: Wazzzer on 14 September 2009, 20:48
told you before, crap  :wink:

All mk4 wishbones are the same, TT bushes will fit as I had my mate at work press them in and I fitted the wishbones myself

Ive read that Seat bushes give a much firm ride so I changed mine for standard VW ones @ £18 each

You will need to take off the rear axel if you dont have a ramp.

Its better to take the axel off anyway...paint it and stick it back on. I cant see how someone can get the bushes back in with the axel in place. They dont go in THAT easy :rolleyes: (without a ramp)

Clamp the brake lines before you undo the pipes! (i used small G clamps)
If you get air in the ABS pump you will need VAG.com to sort it (so ive read)

You will need to burn/heat the old bushes and tap them out with a hammer.

Rear bushes... probably the easiest thing ive changed on a mk4 golf. You dont need a press. You just need some sort of 'wind in' tool (made my own)

Total cost just under £200. That was with new vag shocks too so check those while your at it!

Hope that helps

And burning the old bushes out wouldnt be a good idea next to the fuel tank :grin:

i ordered my vrs ones today, i was reading somewhere and it said that they have to be positioned correctly when installed is this true if so anyone know how and where/what to line it up with

yes. check out the vortex thread
http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=1980960

(http://images40.fotki.com/v1331/photos/2/225168/2167749/diagram-vi.jpg)

I went by the number (2) being closest to the tarmac and has been ok. One was a few mm out of line but still went back on the car ok and have had no problems with handling.

Post by: Steve_PD on 18 September 2009, 13:23
but the vRS ones are solid rubber and have no voids or a positioning marker
