Wheel hubs - grease?
« on: 27 February 2016, 22:43 »
Hi guys,

My monzas are in for a refurb. One of the rear wheels was really hard to get off (bit fused to the hub).

Should I apply some grease to the surfaces when I put my newly refurbished wheels back on?

If so, what type of grease should I use?

Thanks

I wouldn't put grease on there, it reduces the friction coefficient.

I thought I'd drop my sister a line as she works for Porsche. The response from the mechanics was:

'Definitely not, it would make it unsafe, should be metal to metal. You can put a tiny bit of oil on the bolts threads but apart from that, don't put anything on them'

Putting oil on bolt threads leads to them being overtightened even if using a torque wrench. I would not do either and if you clean the hubs and wheels you don't normally get them sticking too bad.
My rears were stuck on pretty bad because the last tyre monkeys didn't clean the surfaces and tightened the wheels up with a bleeping air gun. Had to loosen bolts and then rock the car....

Yes, I agree. I would not use oil on the bolts also. Recipe for disaster..!

Use abit of grease on them, if you don't just wait a couple of years then try to get them off.
