Right, here ya go then. The start of my budget gti thread.
I took ownership of the gti 14/1/07 for the sum of £280 and that included it being delivered from Reading.
Non runner since last feb, obviously no mot or tax.
Bored to 1.9, bilstein suspension, janspeed exhaust, rear disk conversion.
Took a gamble on it as i only see 2 mobile phone pic's before it turned up and just thought, if its a wreck i'll break it.
These are the first pic's before i touched it.
Soon as i took the pic's i got to work on trying to get it running.
Turned key, nothing. So i disconnected the immoboliser then launched it to the wheely bin. Reconnected a red wire at the fuse box that was split for the alarm then turned key again. This time she turned over on the starter but dint fire . Following morning i used the g/f's ibiza to see if it would jump start, guess what? She did she did woohoo! my face had the biggest  on it i tell ya. Anyway once i calmed down i decided to wash the inch of dust off, remove the front bumper, windscreen spats and stuck my black steels on to find out it also has the audi 256mm front brakes aswell, bonus or what!. (http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k314/caddyrage/4.jpg)
The spoiler as now been removed also as i've got a cl version on order.
On closer inspection to the bodywork, both wings need replacing(got genuine vgc one's for £45), tailgate replacing(have vgc spare from a 5dr i broke) and needs the hole in the wheel well patching up. Apart from that it looks rock solid and a very good base to restore.
Last friday i stuck a brand new £50 exide battery on it and replaced the plugs for nearly new one's that came from my old caddy engine. She then fired up on her own. Could'nt resist a spin it so i did and bloody hell it goes!!. Anyway i've rambled on for my 1st post on budget gti so i'll save the rest for the next 1

Due to me working on my caddy to hopefully get her back on the tarmac, i have'nt done much to the golf . I have been collecting bits for her though . I won the auction on a pair of mars red doors for the massive sum of 5 quid!. I had to collect them from bedford but its only an hour drive away. When i got there, i could'nt believe how good the doors looked. The seller also offered me a kent cam and pulley for 30 quid . I ripped his arm off, best 35 quid i've spent in a long time
I also won the auction on an audi 5 pot throttle body for 20 quid delivered so i'am well pleased with that after that polished 1 went for 70!. Need the audi warm up reg to match though if anyone has 1.
Other bits i now have is..... a cl spoiler and the rear cards.
Should think with addition of the engine parts, i should see a tidy bhp increase
Maybe i should just trailer her to the pod

Just thought i'd post up some pic's of the parts i've accumilated  And the little i've done to the car.
Set of cookie cutters. gunna have these sprayed white and polish the lip
(http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k314/caddyrage/cookies.jpg)
Porsche recliners. Can get more pairs of these that need  retrimming(You'll prob do that anyways)for £40, PM me
(http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k314/caddyrage/seats.jpg)
The engine upgrades, Kent cam and pulley, audi 5 pot throttle body and WUR
(http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k314/caddyrage/goodies.jpg)
I recently broke a gti so i used the shell to chuck my scrap in so in went the old tailgate which i replaced with a mint jobbie i had from a diesel 5 door i broke and then followed the removal of the wings....
Was well surprised at how good the front inner arches are, no sign of peeling underseal or rot, only abit of rust at the bottom of the A pillers on both sides where the water traps. Easy job that
As you can see in the tailgate pic, i also been using the car as storage space for interior bits an bobs. Seats and carpets in there.
Hopefully i can either get her in mine or my folks garage soon so i can do some prep work as i really getting eager to get her repainted, cant wait infact

Well i have'nt been upto much with the golf as i been mucking about with caddy's the past month or 2. I bought myself this lovely solid diesel caddy which i started doing my own touches to including fitting my audi wheels from my gti caddy that i eventually sold.

Here's how she is at the mo
(http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k314/caddyrage/caddy029.jpg)
Also did this with a spare tailgate that i'm gunna use daily, have a brand new 1 along with a passenger door being painted for shows etc
before
(http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k314/caddyrage/pics036.jpg)
after
(http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k314/caddyrage/pics051.jpg)
Also have some other bits to go in, raddo seats which i want retimming along with doorcards, gti carpet, centre console, small rear chrome number plates lights. prob other things aswell.
As you can tell, i'm spending my time and money on the caddy so unfortunately i believe i'll be breaking the golf and transfering the running gear to this caddy maybe in the winter.

Thought i'd have a browse on the forum looking at mk1 golf projects when i spotted this old thread by myself. Been bloody ages since i last posted on here.

Well just to update then.

The mk1 golf i started the thread with eventually got sold after i stripped it of the goodie bits. The new owner planned to turn it into a track car but then the muppet scrapped it

I still have my caddy pictured above though

few pic's of it

Also used it as my wedding car in april 09

I did treat it to a 16v kr before swapping again for 16v 9a

I've now stripped the caddy for a full resto rebuild

Day 2 update :)

Jetex stainless system fitted. Had to undo the bottom shock bolts so i could pull the axle down for the 2.5in exhaust to go over lol. Its tight!

Driveshafts back in
Lower stainless steel strutbrace fitted
256mm brakes on, just need a couple of pipes fabbing up, a rebleed then it'll be back on all fours.

Finished my day off by adding some of the ancillaries and re-routing a few things to look as tidy as possible.

Day 3 update

Its running and i drove it home

Pic of the bay

Few things i not happy about
Position of throttle and clutch cables, going to re-route them so they look tidier.

The mk1 gti fuel lines was'nt long enough to tuck them away so they have to stay til i get some made or if i find the PL 16v lines.

I wired it up using the mk1 gti loom then added in the KR ECU loom which i shortened. The ecu is now neatly tucked in the rain tray and attached to the TCI unit, just how i did in my caddy.

Because i was'nt running the full KR loom, i could'nt use the ISV set up for controling the idling.

I used the AAV from the old gti engine which i chopped its mounting bracket off and filed down so it was just a neat cylinder.

After priming the pump so the fueling was under pressure, turned key fully and she started first time, Result.

Would'nt idle at all though then i realised i forgotten to connect the vacuum pipe to ecu , Yes i was in a rush to get her done.
Once sorted, she idled brill with just a little adjustment with the Idle screw on the TB.

Set my gear linkage up which work perfect first time then went for a spin(literally).

Its twice the car it was before. Goes, stops and sounds great.

16v Conversion, Brake upgrade and stainless system done in 3 days. Get in there

New slimline fan next to original unit

Now sits in front of the rad

It can work either by pushing or pulling air, just depends which wire you use for the positive.

Much tidier than the original unit

Collected these this morning

OZ turbo's, 15x7j and ET33's.

Had the wrong size tyres on so i removed them straight away at a garage i've been helping out at.

Going to have some centre's made

Now searching for wider lips and some stainless RS bolts

Title: Re: caddyrage - mk1 gti
Post by: caddyrage on 04 February 2010, 23:13
OZ sockets arrived today which i've borrowed so i could remove the bolts without damaging the original lips. Might need to re-use 2 of the lips so it made sense to remove them properly.

The 4th wheel is at a machine shop as i'am having some flush centres made :)

I'am now looking for a pair of 1in and 1.5in lips, maybe 2in so the fronts will be 7.5's and the rears 8's or 8.5's

I've got a load of RS bolts, 1 set is chrome, the other is a darker shade which could be stainless but its hard to tell.

Also ordered 185/45/15 tyres

Oh, this is the look i going for other than shiney bolts to break them up abit

Had my golf rolling roaded today

Peter Baldwins in wimpole, cambridgeshire. Very professional and i'll definately be using him again in the future.

My fueling is now set correctly and so is my timing.

Also found out that my TB was'nt fully opening due to the mk2 cable i've used. I've now adjusted it so it just about works, i'll look into a better set up when i get 5 mins.

Timing is as advanced as what she'll start at, there was a few more ponies but she would'nt restart so we've gone for a happy medium. Might take its toll on the old mk1 gti starter but i have a recon mk2 16v jobbie in the garage so i have back up and if that fails, i going to fit a larger diesel unit.

Anyway, i was asked roughly what i thought the power would be and i said 150 soooo, when he said it was 164bhp(fly) i was well happy  :)

After a short run down the road and back, i could definately notice the difference made.

Money well spent

Did'nt get a vid of the run as it was me driving it on the rollers as the fella's apprentice

Here's a pic though

Now that my laptops working again, here's a pic of my new bonnet and tailgate nicely wrapped up in my spare room awaiting me to fit them

Also a couple of pic's of my shot blasted turbo's which i cant wait to get built up.

My new lips only arrived on friday. Started building them back up around 8pm and finished sealing them at about 12. Tyres fitted the following morning. Sealer was still tacky so i did'nt blow them up or fit them to the car til sunday morning around 6.30am :)

Little update
Last saturday i stripped the rear end out to lose some weight

Bought a rear strutbrace at Inters and also collected some flush rear doorcards off a mate.

Just need to buy a full mat or carpet the floor.

I also received new leather gear and handbrake gaiters in the post on saturday so they soon went on too.

Well, what a great week i've(we've) had

Having seen pic's of the good turnout at the last mk1 bash(09), i thought i'd give it a go this time round.

It was the same weekend that i was due to go on a weeks break to the lake district so rather than head back after the show to jump in the much comfortable and economical ibiza pd 130, we loaded the golf up and decide to do the lot

Only camped the 1 night so we took the little dome tent to save on space in the little golf

Sunday show day

Good job i took my MTB as i needed it to bike to the local town retail park to get some cash for another strutbrace i bought, ended up biking it twice as the wife did'nt put my card back in my wallet lol.

Was a good show and was quite pleased to see folks pick my car as there favourite of the day, considering there was the likes of jason's lemon S1 and lee's silver S1 there. Jason's only missing out to a bloody BBQ lol.

Anyway, show time over so it was off back to the tent to wrap up and make another 3hr odd journey north to bowness on windermere.

Ambleside

Hard knot pass, apparently the most dangerous road in england so the sign said. Unfortunately i did'nt get the privilege to drive this so acted as camera man instead.

Walked/climbed up scafell pike via the hard route. Highest mountain in england. Here's a pic to show the visability at the top

Really enjoyed it so it looks like i'll be attempting snowdon next and then ben nevis.

Following day, we set off to go grizedale forest so i could do the north face red route mtb trail. Took the ferry accross the lake

On arrival to the forest parking, i got beached on a cobble speed hump. Had to get out and with a passer by, we lifted the car enough for it to get over lol.

Yesterday, we started our drive back. Massive traffic congestion on the M6 took ages to get by. We left at around half 1 and got to leicester for around 7pm where i collected another gearbox. Home for around 9pm

526 mile round trip and around 85 quids worth of fuel. Did'nt miss a beat.

Now time to go clean all the dirt off and get it nice for london volksfest tomorrow
