Title: Which of these 2 speakers should i use?
Post by: bmouthboyo on 15 February 2009, 19:09
Hi Guys,

Just in the process of installing my 4channel amp and components into my MK3 Golf. Now I have my front components sorted, im using my alpine type R's however I need to make a decision about the back.

Basically i used to run a pair of these old alpines in my old car but lost the xovers and tweeters.

No i recently purchased on ebay a set of JBL components as follows:

Now I am thinking of using the old alpine main speaker with the xover and tweeter from the JBL's firstly is this advised? and secondly is the Alpine a better speaker than the JBL? I know the ratings for the JBL are higher but the magnet is much bigger on the alpine and i know the reputation is better.

So to summarise:

Should i use the Alpine speaker or the JBL speaker with the x over and tweeters from the JBL set?

Thanks

Also just noticed the JBL are 2 OHMS and the Alpines 4 OHMS, what does this mean in terms of there power and how i install them?

thanks

If you want to get the best out of what you have then just use one or other of the sets of mids running from either of the xovers, don't use any tweeters in the rear of the car.

If you are running them from an amp then 2 ohm will be fine if you run them in stereo ( not bridged) but if you are running them from the HU then the 2 ohm ones will not be fine.

If you run the 2 ohm ones from the amp then they should receive ( as a rough guess) 2X the power than a 4 ohm set.

I personally would use the JBL if running from amp and alpine if running from HU. Alpine always tend to do well from little power.

Hi Thanks for advice so far.

My amp is 4 Chanel http://incolor.inetnebr.com/weisinator/components/amplifiers/phoenix-gold/pg-qx3004.htm (http://incolor.inetnebr.com/weisinator/components/amplifiers/phoenix-gold/pg-qx3004.htm)

and by looks of stats can run 4 OHMS nicely, ideally i would like to run the Alpines in the rear as the Alpines i have in the front are basically the same model but slightly updated version.

Do you think i should use the Alpines in back to but not hook up the JBL tweeter? Will the sound stage not be very bassy all round then with little high frequency?

Sorry if im being bit stupid, just so confusing lol

thanks

you are not being stupid, its just you are making the same mistakes as most people ;)

That amp ( although the link doesn't work) I promise you will be 2 ohm stable in stereo mode so don't worry about running the JBL's if you want. In fact I just found a link and I had that exact amp so I know for a fact it is 2 ohm stereo stable.

if you ever fancy selling that amp then I would ahppily buy it off you, I am dying to get my hands on another one.

if you use the tweeter then this will mess up the sound stage, it will sound like the sound is coming from everywhere which is not how it should be.

running without the tweeter will lessen this negative effect but not eliminate it.

Hi again, link sorted now.

Yea I had this amp for about 5 years now, bit battered now but still goes strong.

ok so i will use the x-over in the rear but no tweeter.

I just find it hard to believe that i should use the JBL in the rear because i know they are cheap speakers compared to alpine type R, and I'm already running 4 OHM type R in the front.

What benefit would there be of having the JBL's in rear? I assume more power so louder? Would this make a difference considering I never really have it on full blast?

Thanks mate your huge help

no problem.

ideally you want nothing in the back, at least not in 99% of cases.

all the cars which have won SQ competitions all over the world do not use rear speakers except in a very small number where they are used in a very specific way, not like normal speakers at all really.

If you run at 2 ohm you will get more power from that amp, that is why, in theory I would use the JBL's  (preferably in the front). In practice though this may not quiet be the case. Try both, see what you prefer.

OK fitted it all today and to be honest im not that impressed, not sure if its because of different car, or because havnt had it in so long i imagine it to be better, but the speakers sound distorted at what i wouldn't consider too loud, although louder than standard could have taken.

Also there are so many vibrating noises, but i guess natural for car this age (P reg).

Have you definately got the polarity of the speakers the same? +ive & -ive the right way? :S

correct.

It may be worth checking they are all the correct way around though, just in case.
