I tried the seats again last night, and they're definitely not moving - either of them.  I'll pop into my local dealer when I get a chance and see what they say.  Thanks again for the help

It seems there are cables that have become disconnected.  Can anyone tell me if this is a big/awkward job?  Any chance it's something I can fix easily myself?

There is a knack to it...... Lever up.....push seat back to make it more errrrr folded forward.... They should slide easy enough now getting them to return to where you left them LOL that's a bloody web discussion forum on it's own www.cantgetmysh!ttyseatsback.com

I know what you are on about, it's nothing to do with stiff seats!

My passenger seat has just had this problem and I can barely find anything on the net, someone here mentioned a snapped cable which is right.

This is what I did to find out exactly what is wrong:

- Raise both seats to the maximum height
- Compare both mechanism movements for driver and passenger seats to see what the passenger seat is not doing
- If the lever is moving down beneath the seat (long black metal thing) but not to the bottom it means it has weakened, if the thing doesn't move at all unless you do it manually then the cable connecting the lever (the thing you lift on top of your seat to move it) has snapped somewhere inside.

I am going to try and see if I can fix it but before I do I will get a price from a VAG specialist, cba with dealer prices.

I like a new car that needs 70p widgets and spanner adjustments to cables like a push bike, I really do.
It adds character, you don't get that with a Honda.

Mines pretty hit and miss with this too - I find I have to physicallly push the seat back hard forward almost as though the side bolsters are pressing into the seat side bolsters then I can slide it - right pain in the a$$.  Someone tried to do this on the passenger side and couldn't get the the seat to move forward to let his girlfriend in the back - his comments were "Looks like you bought yourself a right ringer here"  :embarassed:   I don't think they are "broken" just badly designed although I'm sure someone at VAG thought it was a clever idea on paper (or in a CAD system!)

yeah - but they don't look as nice as a 3 door   besides if the seats don't work it means you can't take passengers in the back (unless they are matchsticks and can squeeze through) - bit of extra weight saving, great for fuel economy and even better for Chav machine thrashing on the twisties

Actually a couple of weeks posting here that it was just a "knack" my drivers seat won't slide. It looks like the mechanism cable, like a bike brake doesn't shorten when you push the seat forward.  Logically it's like the end inside the seat is disconnected. Hmmm if so can't see it as an easy fix. Any ideas anyone?
