uh oh remapped now blown turbo!!
« on: 16 September 2008, 21:07 »
hiya im after some advice about a remap ive had done at a differant company!!

took the GT TDi in today and it was remapped from 130 bhp to 170 bhp, the remap didnt go too well and they replaced the air filter, fuel filter and air sensor to try and find out what had happened.  in the end the guy said he would send the report off to find the actual fault and he'd get in touch.  the only thing that was wrong was that the turbo seemed to lag a bit at 3 grand then kick in again at 3.5.  anyway it was hardly noticable so we drove it home and all of a sudden it dumped really loud and then started making a weird noise and blue smoke started puffing out!!!  well i guess the turbo has blown lol......

what i need to know is, in your experiance, is it due to a dodgy remap or is it just coincidence as im obviously going to ring the place in the morning and i want to know where i stand

cheers!

Hi!  Just got back from the caravan site club house with some ale in my blood steam..hehe.

Did the guy test the car prior to the remap?   IMO A really bad remap would not blow a turbo that quick.  but it would cause an inherrant fault to show up worse or put summat out of action which was on its way out.    We used tried and tested base remaps which are well with in safe working limits of turbos and pressure rail / pump limits.  most good companies will work this way.  The 130pd should tune to 170bhp with ease with out too much added stress to the turbo or fuel system.  When I have remapped a car I will take it out for road test and even before I hit 4th gear I will know if the engine is running right or wrong.  If it is not running right I will spend the time to resolve the fault and get the car running right, If we cannot get the car right  or we are not 100% we will take the remap off until the inherrant fault has been found.  By the sounds if it the guys who remapped your car knew what they where doing and the knew what the car should of pulled like if not they would of not played around with changing parts.  If your turbo has gone it could have been a faulty boost valve, or a major boost leak which allow the tubro to over spool,  It is very hard to over pressure boost the turbo at higher rpms,  it could  have been on its last legs and the extra boost has finished it off.  How many miles has your car done?  plus who remapped it?  PM me with the company name, Its not nice to get neg feedback without all the facts at this point. I know most tuners and who supplies there files in this game so I will give you a honest answer.

Without having seen the car, its hard to say for sure.. but many times i've found people with a similar problem and it turned out to be a blown boost hose, or even just a hose popped off the intercooler.

i hope its just something like that.  well my fella phoned the place today and although they wont fix it for free (lol i wished!!) they have been really helpful.  from the replies we sort of thought that possibly the turbo was on its way out anyway and maybe the remap just killed it off, unfortunate timing for us tho as we are due to go on holiday on monday and im having a baby and we are due to move house so money is a major issue!!! anyways they come today and towed it off and are going to remove the turbo for us and refit after we have got it fixed so not a bad outcome.  my fella couldnt remove it himself due to needing some special star shaped tool thing and him having a knackered leg and not been able to kneel for long.  the car didnt go till this afternoon so should hear something tomorrow. fingers tightly crossed for just a blown pipe or something or we will be living on beans whilst we are on hols :(

just wanted to let you all know the outcome.  well it was unfortunatly worst case scenario and the turbo was well and truely broke.  we decided to get a new one as they dont cost that much more than a recon and the company that did the remap fitted it all for us.  we were car-less for a few days but it come back today and.............its bloody ace lol!!  it go's like a rocket.  even though my motor blew up and its cost stupid money, its well worth it to have such an enjoyable drive.  i even bummed an impreza today haha

thanks to all that replied

Hi!

Like I said PSI tuning are a good company and will bend-over backwards to help you.  The remap just finished your turbo off, sooner or later it would have gone even on the factory map.
Glad you are up and running again few quid less, but happy with the perfomance.
