I don't think they (BMW) have even tried to compete with the Golf.

For someone not copying, they have done a bang up job. Its external and interior dimensions are identical virtually. Its kit list, neigh on the same - the only two things I can think of are HUD (which I think the Mk8 will offer) and wireless charging/carplay/AA (which the mk8 definitely does have).

Don't they say imitation is the best form of flattery? lets see if anyone copies the Mk8??

Starting to quite like the Mk8 GTE now;-

Not sure about the (lack of) steering wheel buttons though  :undecided:

Think if you change the trim to red, add some round exhausts and perhaps a different set of wheels that's pretty much a GTI.

That continuous grill isn't amazing, or those odd-looking fog lights (like a Kia as pointed out previously).

Seats look great and will be even nicer with red details as will the exterior. Rest of the interior is what it is. If you don't like the lack of buttons then the Mk8 won't be for you.

Some aspects of the MK8 GTE on the video posted earlier in this thread do look good, but on second review of the video I noticed it still has that damn drainage grommet in the tailgate which always perishes and comes off.

I also noticed the MK8 golf has a visible key lock on the door now rather than hidden/covered as on the MK7. I can see the bucket style seats on a GTI or R looking great and I also noticed the ambient lighting stripes are on the rear doors as well as the front now.  I know these are really minor things, But for some of them to appear on the golf, it has taken a whole mark change before we have seen them appear on the car which is a little frustrating, as they could have been included in the MK7.5 update.

Auto Express front cover this week features the Mk8 GTI and it is shown with Parkers.
I know A/E is notorious for its imaginings but it would be interesting if VW continued to use this wheel as its “standard” kit for the GTI.
Must admit I wasn’t keen on Parkers after my lovely Austins but I’m quite used to them now.
Hope they are indeed the signature GTI Mk8 wheel.

Not the most flattering angle, and that spoiler looks way too big.

Other than that, doesn't look too bad to me

The size of the spoiler surprised me plus the lack of any substantial rear diffuser. Exhaust tips look very odd for a gti.

If you look closely under the Vw badge you can see the outline of the gti badge.

At least it doesn’t have sodding chrome window trims.

By the size of the spoiler I guess that confirms the Clubsport is returning (obviously fitted with more apt wheels!)

Yeah it does look very Clubsport. They’ll definitely be 2 levels of gti again. I’ve said all along though that the TCR will be a trim level gti and not a special edition. I think this would be great news tbh.
