As a 40 year old with no claims, I’m surprised at the costs of comparison quotes for Gti tcr insurance, the closest one to my renewal with Hastings (£339) is £130 more and many are £700-1000+

Can’t see anything wrong in the details!

Insurers use multiple risk factors when calculating premiums and driver age is only one of many factors used. Garaging postcode is a risk factor that can make a huge difference to premium - a mature driver living in a high theft risk area could quite easily pay a higher premium than a younger driver in a low theft risk area.

Lots of other risk factors will also influence the premium; e.g. number of claim free years, other drivers named on the policy, occupation, marital status, annual mileage driven, use of the vehicle, voluntary excess chosen............and the list goes on.

Many people don’t consider the traditional way of buying car insurance through a high street broker these days when buying cover. However, many high street brokers have access to specialist segments of the car insurance market that can quote competitive premiums; e.g. specialist scheme arrangements with some insurers, and / or access to insurers who specialise in insuring performance cars.

Always shop around and shop widely (and wisely) - especially at insurance renewal time, as some insurers ‘buy in’ business in the first year at very competitive premiums, and then apply significant increases at renewal. So never just let your insurance auto-renew, otherwise you could end up paying considerably more than you were paying the previous year.

Old duffer with full NCB. When I was living in a country village I paid £300 for the year. Now living in a big city it's £800. Which is nice.

Have an accident or get it nicked, have a conversation with a Claims Adjuster or Loss Adjuster and all of a sudden your memory will become crystal clear as the Insurance company refuse to pay out - simply not worth it.

I’m in my ‘50’s now but I was surprised that the GTI (new 7.5) was as cheap to insure as it was / is when I moved over from a 9 year old Discovery nearly 2 years ago - initially with Admiral as existing insurer and then on GoCompare, first with M&S and now with Sainsbury’s Bank and who knows who else in 2021👍

Not worth taking the risk IMO.

You might be the innocent victim of, say, a hit and run, so end up needing to claim on your own insurance. As @Adam T7 has said, if your damaged car is inspected by one of your insurance company’s representatives and spots modifications that haven’t been declared, it’ll almost certainly have a bearing on the outcome of the claim. Worse case scenario, they refuse to pay out.

Also, not declaring modifications could invalidate your insurance, meaning you’re effectively driving uninsured which is a criminal offence.
