Think the only sure way is to ask an MOT station to do an emmission check.

Give it a shake when it's cold, if you can hear bits moving around then...kaput. What can happen is the bits get blown to the back and block up the zorst, in worst cases you blow the manifold gasket. This is what I gleaned from the garage when I had some tyres fitted.
