Las Vegas

"Elsewhere there is an interesting story from the United States where Bruton Smith, the man who runs Speedway Motorsports Inc, which owns and operates speedways, has announced a project to build a copy of the old Nürburgring, not far from Las Vegas, in Nevada. The project would involve public land that is currently administered by the Bureau of Land Management.

This may seem an odd tale, but there may be some logic in it, particularly if it is being driven from Germany, where the Nürburgring has been in all kinds of financial trouble since the decision to build a theme park in 2009. This has failed to deliver on all counts because the facility is simply too remote to attract visitors. In the circumstances the only way forward is to promote the venue as much as possible, and as widely as possible.

The Nürburgring is a racing brand that could be developed internationally and Las Vegas would be a good place to do it. Smith says that the intention is to create an automotive testing facility where manufacturers can test their machinery. However there must be more to that than meets the eye and one might suggest that there would also be much potential as a tourist attraction which would allow visitors to use the facility when it was not booked for testing.

Las Vegas is always looking for new ways to attract visitors. In recent years the market has stumbled and although the numbers are now recovering the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority says that the current results are comparable to 2005. Creating a Nürburgring Nevada facility could create not only revenues for the German circuit, but would also act as a promotional tool. The real question in that case would be who is going to pay for the construction, but once that investment was made there would be great potential because Las Vegas has around 39 million visitors a year and they are always looking for new things to do. Smith said that the facility would be within 10 miles of the city and one can imagine a development which would double as a theme/casino entity and a great driving experience. No doubt there would also be some construction grants or tax breaks as well."

Given the current cluster f*ck in the Eifel region, what could *possibly* go wrong with an American version?
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

Holiday cottages on the Isle of Wight for 2-10 people? PM me.
