How to change the Cambelt on Mk3 GTi
« on: 11 March 2017, 00:08 »
Hi guys,
So my Mk3 GTi came back form the garage with a few need to do's.
- Cambelt
- Brake lines
and a few other small bits.

My main interest is the cambelt. I =m pretty handy with a set of spanners and what not, and Ive just ordered a Haynes manual for the car. It is an R plate by the way.

Is this a big difficult job? Ive never odne one before. Can anyone lead me to an online video tutorial or anything?

Also, in terms of buying what I need. Suggestions? Is just buying the belt all I need? If so will this do?

The same website also have a cambelt kit, would I be better off buying this? :

Any help would be awesome,
Thanks.

Buy the full kit. Fairly easy to do.
Turn the engine via the bottom pulley until you see tdc on the flywheel.
Theres a bung to remove.

Then take the alt belt and covers off and look at the camshaft. There should be a mark that sits to the top edge of the head where the cam cover meets it.

Tipex marks to see them
Remove tensioner and belt. Change tensioner and such
The haynes will tell you the torques
Get all the belt slack tensioner side and tighten tensioner.

Turn engine by hand 4 times and make sure all the tipex marks line up.
Put it back together and drive on

as long as the crank pulley bolts don't round off, you're good to go . I always crack them off first btw. give yourself a day if you've never done one before. sure it won't take you that long, but you don't want to be stuck without a motor.

Yes - its not a hard task, just intimidating.

Only thing I would suggest is take out the spark plugs, makes turning over a lot easier
