Was rocking between 135 and 140 horses once, I would be more than happy if I could claw most of them back.. She doesn't need any more than that............. for now.

wow, 135-140bhp? from an 8v? That's almost as much as a 16v has from standard  (runs away and hides)

You don't own a Mk2, you support it.

Meh, that's what it was/should be! At the time I'd taken ownership it was the best normally aspirated 8v I'd ever driven.

The car was originally properly badged up as an RLR 1800 Plus (Richard Lloyd Racing) I've still got the one for the boot.  The engine and slam panel are marked up with his GTI Engineering plaque.

Originally the head was gas flowed, so was the inlet manifold and the four branch exhaust manifold. re-profiled inlet and exhaust valve seats, bigger valves with better underhead profiles, upgraded valve springs, 276 degree cam, modified dizzy (not sure how though!), limiter removed!  supersprint exhaust and custom made Magnum US rear silencer (which nobody likes the look of)

Feels like a normal 8v until you get to 4k and pulls/pulled like fook as far as you dare go off the tacho!

No limiter. I'd only take it to 8k at the most

Such an unusual engine should be preserved as best you can. Those guys knew what they were doing back then.

I do like the 8v for tootling about but I enjoy the valver when pressing on.

Sounds like you have best of both worlds there and an excellent excuse to have a shift light

I haven't got a problem with it either, it my not look right for MK1 or any other car these days but overall it suits it as it does it's job without sounding sh*t!... a low subtle gurgle.

Yeah I would't want to stress her out too much!

To be honest there were quite a few motors done like this at the time by GTI engineering but you're right, they don't mod them like they used to.  This one is special to me due to the Richard Lloyd Markings and the sad thing is THIS happened not long before the structural repair work on the car began!
