Title: We Connect
Post by: mistac on 06 March 2020, 21:40
On the advice of my dealer, I have set it up and ordered the online services in anticipation of the forthcoming collection. Today I got notified that the online services/connection went live and I am now "connected" to the car despite never seeing it   Because I am a bit sad, I have been checking the app out - not sure whether I am supposed to or not but see below if anyone is interested
I think I could even remotely set the horn off lol but will not! Trawling through the app, it shows various data as below, one of which suggests mileage of 64 (unless it is a dummy/demo mileage) but surely it has not been driven that much? It also shows a drive today of 2 miles if I understand correctly and that the service interval is currently set as long life but I believe will need amending to fixed as I have opted for the £199 2 service deal. I don't think it has had its PDI yet though. Fascinating stuff considering I have not even seen it yet!  Expecting the GTI to be on Bridgestones I guess

I'd set the horn off a few times during the day when technicians are around to hear it - they might think it's possessed.

64 miles! Someone at the dealership has been using it. I’ve had 2 new golfs. Neither had more than 7 miles at collection.

If the app is connected, that also means someone has entered an activation code. That should be the first owner, not the dealer.

Yes, 64 miles is too much IMO for a brand new car that you’re collecting from the dealer’s premises. It’d be different if it had that mileage and the dealer was delivering the car to your home. The four brand new VW’s I’ve had each had between 7 and 8 miles on the clock when I collected them.

Worth having a read of this discussion thread;

I entered the activation code as part of the registration process - I was asked to register as part of the psi process?  - if that is the mileage I will be saying something!

Yes, 64 miles sounds way too high. Mine was on 15 which I think is at the upper end of acceptable, but mine was a cancelled order and I believe it went from dealership to remote storage compound a couple of times.

@Mistac - worth reading that thread of 'acceptable' mileage that SRGTD linked to - 64m is too much in my opinion. I'd raise it with the dealership and look to get a discount or even walk away if they try fobbing you off.

New should be new - I can understand a technician taking it for a couple of miles to road test it locally and check everything working etc but 64 miles? no way. My guess would be that the car came from a dealers storage at a different location to the one you're dealing with and rather than paying for proper transport, they've just sent a someone to drive it back then reset the mileage prior to collection. By connecting to the App, you've got a heads up here. Good luck.

The car will be generating data to the We Connect system constantly once activated (in the car, not the app) so I would guess that the 64 miles is distance the GPS has recorded while on a transporter and the 2 miles and 44 minutes actual running you are seeing in the app is the car being unloaded and then left ticking over at the dealers.

You will need to go through the VW positive identity process before the horn, lights and lock features in the app are available.

Thanks - I hope you are correct. Sheerness port is close to the dealers but I suppose it could have gone to other places/dealers first!

I once bought a new Mazda RX/8 which was delivered with 85 miles on the clock. I knew it was being delivered from another dealership about ‘40 miles away’,  but the other 45 miles were somewhat unaccounted for. This was in the days before connected apps and big brother type monitoring!

Update - picked my GTI up today. As the We Connect app indicated the other day it had done 64 and by today it had done 79 miles. I did tell them I was not best pleased but other than saying sometimes some of the cars do you have a bigger delivery mileage on them I got nowhere. However I was feeling crappy and in the current climate I just want to get the car and drive home.

Car looks great!

80 miles though, could have been used for all sorts

Haha, yeah! Those engines were not renown for their longevity, but I sold it with only 11K on the clock and bought the Scirocco.

I’d send an email to the dealer principal stating the mileage at collection and the evidence you took from the app that the car was in use by an employee prior to collection. It’s simply not acceptable to use a customers brand new car as a pool car prior to collection.

As I have plenty of time now to fiddle about, I have so far registered with the VW ID process for remote locking/unlocking, updated maps, added speed cameras and added radio logos! Just cant really use/drive it much at the moment.

some of you may recall my earlier post regarding my delivery mileage - below is the reply I received from the managing director

"Many thanks for your email and I hope you are keeping well in these strange times.

As you can imagine my ability to fully investigate your email is restricted as many of my staff are on furlough , as is the case with Volkswagen headquarters staff.

What I can ascertain is that the vehicle arrived with us with 60+ miles on the clock and whilst what I am about to say is assumption , the vehicle did take longer than usual to arrive  at Emden from the factory which may mean that it was a car pulled out of it’s slot for secondary quality control. I can assure you the vehicle was not used by my staff as a pool car or anything similar , we have plenty of cars in our own stock so no requirement there. We did carry out the manufacturer required PDI which requires a test drive but that is no more than 10 miles and I can only account for the additional few miles being moved from our group storage compound to site.

I hope the above gives you some reassurance and I wish you happy motoring and stay safe."

Although I am a little frustrated still, I don't really know what more I can do and the car seems ok (the most important thing) and I guess life is too short to keep pursuing it!

In other words... “I’m going to use a lot of words but not say anything, so hopefully you feel comforted by the effort I’ve put into this non-reply that doesn’t help.”

This is one of those moments where you just have to be frustrated, moan, then move on I guess.

Where do you have that option in the App?

I had that on my previous car, and used the feature quite a bit, but in my We-Connect it's not there and I thought I had the latest version...

I am honoured to help you   - normally it (advice) is the other way round! - the default option is under the "vehicle" tab of the app (https://i.postimg.cc/mgb6qgty/wecon.png) (https://postimg.cc/w7GVRH51)

 - you probably know that - and then I went through the vw id process (cant find that part of app now though ) to actually enable it - it does work as I have tried it to test it

..........though exactly what use remote locking is, I don’t know, especially as it takes an age to actually do anything. I’ve tried it at home and can take upwards of a minute to function, a bit like sending a text, time wise.

I also have a delay but have not time it!
Title: Re: We Connect
Post by: Mutley75 on 02 May 2020, 10:16
It's a bit limited to be honest.  The time lag is because it's waiting to establish a connection with the car via the car's built-in 3G SIM and if you're in a crap signal area, it'll struggle to make the connection.  Even when it is connected, it's not overly useful.  I parked up at work (a few months ago, obviously!) and walked away from the car and couldn't remember if I had locked it or not so opened up the app.  It confirmed it was indeed locked.  So I thought I'd click the horn button only for it to report that I was too far away from the car for it to work - I was no more than 500 yards away!  That said, I still find it useful if I can't recall how much petrol I have, and can't be arsed to go outside, unlock the garage and switch on the ignition so it has its uses.

Oh, the app, overall, is worth having, I was only questioning the lock/unlock function. I think, in other countries, you can have remote start, which would be nice in winter. The app which used an OBD port dongle used to be able to show battery state of charge, which would have been useful now, but I can’t find a way to show that either on the current app or in the car. Pity!

I bought a cheap meter but I believe you can see battery voltage by holding down the trip reset button as you switch the ignition on. There’s a YouTube for it below. Albeit analog dash so not sure if it still works on the digital one.

Thanks - I've finally found the reason why I have everything else but don't have the ability to unlock/lock via the app. The reason was buried in the small print on the VW website...

"This service is available in vehicles with the "Security & Service" service, for models ordered on or after 1 January 2019."

... which is why you get the > by the unlock that allows you to go to another screen, and I don't:

For those asking why you would use/need it. I used it (on my old car) when I was meeting my partner and the kids. She would meet me after work where I'd parked the car. She would drop me a text when she arrived and I unlocked the car so she could get in, very handy when it was raining! It saved her having to carry around my spare key. I also used it when I was meeting friends at the car and they arrived there before me.

i think you have to have the little circuit on the v- of the battery for that, which was one thing taken off some of the mk7.5

You’re very trusting. I don’t even like friends sitting in my car, yet alone being let loose in my absence. I’d rather they got wet. And then they’d have to walk as I wouldn’t let them in with damp clothes and muddy feet 😂🤣

I was given the chassis number of my incoming TCR today and went onto the We Connect thing to add the car. It then asked about subscribing to free things but the start date was obviously going to be today. What difference does it make waiting for the car to actually turn up?

If you register now, do you get to find out if the Tyne Dock drivers are ragging your car after unloading it, or you get to unlock and relocate the car repeatedly while it's having its PDI, as if it's possessed?

does it make any difference registering now though before the car has arrived? It says about starting the contract now.
