Ordered 4 new tyres which the garage are paying for as part of the deal
Got a discount on some new roof bars
Sold the satnav from the A3

The car had a private plate from new and checking tonight this has now been removed from the DVLA database so I'm hopeful a new plate has been issued and the paperwork will arrive soon

Then its time to 'Fire up the Quattro'

Haven't got it yet.....bloody DVLA seem to be dragging their feet   would be quicker to drive to Swansea and collect the paperwork myself!!

Very nice.

Now get it remapped!!

Might give it a week or two before that happens   or it might be done whilst I'm sat in it about to drive away from the garage

have you mapped it yet
Title: Re: Rhyso's Family Wagon - Fire Up The Quattro!
Post by: Rhyso on 24 January 2016, 16:09
have you mapped it yet

Not yet.  Going to leave it a week or two to make sure there are no underlying issues with it.  VCDS scan showed everything to be ok but then it went to a VW specialist for its MOT.....  had to have been a tidy MOT mind as to pass it they fitted two cheap tyres to the front in order to pass it   Part of my deal was a complete set of tyres of MY choice so they've had to pay out for 6 new tyres

First job is to fit a complete set of new UniRoyal's and 4 wheel alignment; make sure all the wheels are pointing straight before asking them to cope with more power

Yeah i love mapping 4x4's; stuff that big shouldn't be THAT quick

The A6 is definitely a few steps up from the A3 and lo and behold it actually has some steering feel!!

yeah they really are steps ahead of the a3 with the a6 and they don't feel the size they are when driving they are also so comfy on long journeys

Yesterday I received this
(https://s20.postimg.org/e97a83ard/IMG_0015.jpg) (https://postimg.org/image/e97a83ard/)

So i did this
(https://s20.postimg.org/ijhcpxqgp/IMG_0016.jpg) (https://postimg.org/image/ijhcpxqgp/)

Which left me with this
(https://s20.postimg.org/4bro1adrt/IMG_0017.jpg) (https://postimg.org/image/4bro1adrt/)

Which meant I can do this
(https://s20.postimg.org/hv8i6zrqx/IMG_0018.jpg) (https://postimg.org/image/hv8i6zrqx/)

In short I updated the firmware on the MMI which means I can use a sim card in the car for data services and Google Maps and use my iPhone to make and receive calls. Prior to the update the car could only use one or the other but a number of owners complained to Audi who released the updated firmware for older cars; new cars come with this capability already installed

Looms to retrofit puddle lights to the rear doors turned up the other day :)

Just need some dry weather and time to fit them now.......

New tyres arrived yesterday so they will be fitted on Monday and the car will also have 4 wheel alignment carried out

Weather has been crap so looms are still in the packet

Had the tyres fitted today but they couldn't do the alignment. The rear camber is slightly out but Audi in their infinite wisdom fitted the camber sdjustment right next to the strut and the only way to get to it is to remove the wheel   so its rebooked for next Monday

Its a quick car and also a flying machine

Ta Wes

massive upgrade (literally!) from the A3 but more so in terms of build quality, refinement and the way it gets down the road. The A6 actually has FEEDBACK through the steering     The A3 always felt very light at the helm whereas the A6 is quite weighty. Its no Porsche but coming from the A3 its nice to know exactly what the front end is doing

Puddle and door warning lights fitted to the rear door cards :)

Bit of a mission as I couldn't find any how-to's on removing the door cards so I created my own! Also because I got the little LED's in the interior door handle I had to splice into the earth wire needed for the lights

Loom and lights
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y276/Rhyso/Audi%20A6/236DF4C7-551D-4D51-AEFA-D425F0352565_zpsfrcvede0.jpg) (http://s7.photobucket.com/user/Rhyso/media/Audi%20A6/236DF4C7-551D-4D51-AEFA-D425F0352565_zpsfrcvede0.jpg.html)

Area that needs to be 'modified'
(https://s20.postimg.org/tbe02a81l/IMG_0061.jpg) (https://postimg.org/image/tbe02a81l/)

Light installed

Will hopefully get some night time pics :)

I like this a lot.

As is the way with me I'm already considering replacements for the Yeti for when I'm done with it and a Superb 4x4 TDI Estate is high up the list. Pretty much the same car as these minus the 6 banger up front and the Audi tax.

After a few hours working on it this weekend I wasn't loving it much   it kind of reminded me why I do less modifying but then it was all back toegther and working and I remembered why I do; satisfaction

Skoda's have come a long way and in some guises are better looking than their VAG counterparts. I like the Yeti and would be happy if Linzi eventually replaced the Modus with one

Back in for 4 wheel alignment tomorrow as the wheels have to come off to get at the camber adjustment

First time I got to really look at the paintwork and its in a sorry state :( been through far too many car washes in its life time so it needs a good machine polish to bring it back to its former glory

A month into ownership and i've covered over 1000 miles. Performance and comfort are 2nd to none; MPG is a bit of a shock :whistle2: but it is steadily improving as I'm still very much learning how to get the best out of the gearbox and engine. Its a very different drive to the A3

All in all I'm happy :)

Yup!!

Boring update but since getting the wheels aligned and 'learning' how to drive the V6 / DSG combo average MPG has gone from 31mpg to 34.8mpg   and that includes some spirited spints against those who underestimate the 'wagon'  :lipsrsealed:

Just seen this clip, frightening!
Makes me realise why I don't do traffic light drag offs anymore. You sometimes get embarrassed by these sort of sleepers that you think are unlikely to get anywhere near you.  Damned forced induction, even bloody Corsas can show me a clean pair of heals these days! I get a thumb up more often than not though, where-as Corsa drivers get a different finger.........

In other news I took the car back to the garage I bought it from to sort the not locking fuel flap and the noisy screen

So yesterday's job was to replace the rear brakes as the warning light had come on. Also something had gotten inbetween the pad and disc and scored the surface :(

I would say it was a fairly straightforward job except that the 18mm bolts holding the bracket on were seized solid and required some improvisation with a breaker bar and a lump hammer to crack them off!  Then we had to bash the discs off as there were rusted onto the hub..........

Tools you need for the job are
Jack and axle stands
VCDS - to disengage the pistons in the caliper
18mm socket for the two bolts holding the pad bracket on
13mm socket for the two bolts holding the caliper on

One tip I would suggest for those that have Quattro is to jack up both sides at the same time. This will allow you to rotate the disc should you need to smash it off

Didn't get any real pictures of the job as me and my mate were too busy swearing and bashing lol

I missed the bar at one point though....

Can see the scoring on the disc; ignore the dents. That was us hitting the disc to free it off the car!!

So last Saturday I was out with some friends and one of my mates asked if anyone fancied going to France for the semi-final (I'm Welsh by the way)

After about 10 minutes we decided we were going. An hour later we had booked the accommodation and the following day the ferry was booked!

So at 1am Wednesday morning we began our journey

Quick pit stop
(https://s20.postimg.org/rrdq105yx/IMG_0583.jpg) (https://postimg.org/image/rrdq105yx/)

Arrived at the site
(https://s20.postimg.org/4i9hyqvcp/IMG_0585.jpg) (https://postimg.org/image/4i9hyqvcp/)

MPG for the trip down - 4 lads and a full boot and I wasn't hanging around

(https://s20.postimg.org/5th977qyh/IMG_0584.jpg) (https://postimg.org/image/5th977qyh/)

After nearly a 1000 miles in just a few days the A6 has left me seriously impressed with its capabilities as a long distance tourer. It sat at motorway speeds the same way other cars would potter around town

Even into triple digits the car felt planted and it would clearly go well beyond what I was comfortable doing (which was a fair bit!)

Already planning our next trip when the World Cup qualifiers start in September lol

Had a full service carried out at Cardiff Independent VW Services today; well impressed with the service

They replaced all the filters (including pollen) and the oil with genuine parts for £220 :) Audi wanted £399......

Feeling pleased at my saving I was then brought back down to earth by an idiot driver who swerved out from a space on the opposite side of the road which meant I had to swerve to avoid him and ended up in an argument with the kerb.......

(https://s20.postimg.org/9fw9bcc3d/IMG_1020.jpg) (https://postimg.org/image/9fw9bcc3d/)

So went to see my mate and have booked it in with him to have all 4 refurbed as the previous owner liked riding the kerbs too. Only going for the standard finish as if I clip them again it starts getting expensive.......

Also bought some black centre caps and 15mm wheel spacers ready for when the wheels go on

In other news I've covered over 10,000 miles since I bought the car

I was hoping to get a picture of the long term trip computer but it resets at 10,000 miles

It was showing a long term average of 39.6mpg but tracking it via Fuelly shows it's actually around 34mpg.....

In other news the UniRoyals are about to give up after just 12,500 miles :(

Ordered some Michelin PS3's at £200 per corner fitted.......could have gotten them a few quid cheaper but the garage I use always do a great job of balancing the wheels (hide the weights!) and have never damaged a wheel

I just hope they last considerably longer :(

So today marks a years ownership of the A6

In that time i have

Covered 14,500
Replaced the interior lights for LEDS and the indicator bulbs
Rubber mats all round
Replaced the rear brakes
Had it serviced
Had the wheels refurbed
Started to correct the paintwork
Gone through a set of tyres
Averaged 35mpg....  :lipsrsealed:

Finally had the windscreen replaced (kept getting delayed due to the weather) but they are coming back out today as there is something rattling under the scuttle panel; at least I hope it's under there otherwise I could potentially be looking at stripping the dashboard apart  :undecided:

What has the last 12 months revealed??

Apart from the slight shock of the MPG and burning through a set of tyres the A6 is an astonishing bit of kit. The ride is comfy, even on 19 inch wheels, as it soaks up all the little bumps and potholes that would have had the A3 slipping across the tarmac

The Quattro system is brilliant; it gives you so much grip in all conditions.  Even with snow on the ground it simply dug the tyres in and propelled me up the road. It's important to note here, that no one shoukd take this system for granted. It won't save you from black ice and therefore shoukd be treated with respect. I see far too many people in 4x4's bombing along in poor conditions and then watch as they have a 'moment'  :lipsrsealed:

It even passed its MOT last week
http://vv2u.co/7Ci3N

So the next job is to replaced the front brakes. I'll also whip off the undertray as I suspect (hope) the oil that was found is from an old leak. The car hasn't used a drop of oil since being serviced 4500 miles ago

What's in store for the A6 this year??  An RS6 style front grill is high on my list and also getting the paintwork up to a decent standard

Other than that it's simply a case of using it for what it was designed for; which it does very well and hopefully NOT lose my licence  :lipsrsealed:

Things I like:
It's comfortable - the primary and secondary ride is, IMO, very good.  My old A3 on S-Line suspension was bumpy and crashy and tended to skip you across the road.  The A6 simply absorbs all but the harshest of bumps.  It took myself and 3 mates to France without breaking a sweat; all 3 of them fell asleep as I drove!!

DSG - 99% of the time it's awesome.  The shifts are smooth in either full auto or manual mode, allowing you to make comical progress
The 1% when it isn't is mainly when approaching junctions / roundabouts and instead of perhaps holding 3rd gear it drops you into second and makes you look like a learner who is over-revving the engine........

Quattro - as above.  This is my first Quattro driven car and I can't see me having anything but in the future.  I have been seriously impressed by the drive train :)

Engine - I waited about 48 hours before mapping it; it has effortless overtaking ability......perhaps too much as I find myself going for gaps that I wouldn't even have entertained in my A3 which was running over 200bhp.....!

Advanced key:
Being able to simply walk up to the car and open it without having to fumble for a set of keys is great!  My missus isn't too sure as she likes to rip the handle off when she locks the car so keyless would be no good for her lol

Things I don't like:
Start / Stop system - has a mind of it's own.  I'm now wondering if the poor condition of my front discs are to blame for it cutting out early??

Lack of dipstick - call me old fashioned but I do like to physically check the oil level myself and not rely on some sensor......

Throttle response in drive mode - even mapped the throttle response is not what I expect of a V6 so I spend 95% of my time in Sport Manual!

That's about it really!  Running costs have been a little higher than expected but then I do remind myself I am running a 280bhp+ 3.0 V6!!

Fitting complete!!

And what a fecking ball ache it turned into  :lipsrsealed:

The bumper is held on by a myriad of torx screws and a couple of well hidden 10mm bolts.....the grill itself is then held on by about 10 screws and clips......

Then we had to CUT the new grill in order to mount the front camera. I was aware a bit of modding would be required but it was a little more than expected......

Anyhoo didn't take many pics but heres a few

Car apart - we have sprayed the crash bar black to hide it

For me that would be too much black. I have chrome side trims and roof rails so I would have to start changing all that. For me the chrome rings bring some definition and help tie the grill to the rest of the car

Nothing much to update; car is closing on 92,000 miles overall.......averaging anywhere between 32-35mpg over a tank depending on my journeys

Hoping to get the wheel alignment done again soon just to make sure everything is spot on

Been a while since I’ve updated this but lots of stuff has been happening and not all of it good but hey ho; just got to get on with life

I replaced the Michelins with the Goodyear Assy 3’s as Costco had a great deal on them and I bagged a set in 19’s for £550 fitted   I’ve done over 3000 miles or thereabouts on them and they seem to be performing really well. An added bonus is they are quieter than the previous tyres

Then before Christmas I had someone reverse into me and crack my RS grill   hit me with the tow bar!!

(https://s20.postimg.org/t4xtlwcpp/C6916844-8008-47_A5-_A4_A6-_D29_C194_E21_E4.jpg) (https://postimg.org/image/5qpu9yus9/)

(https://s20.postimg.org/4bo9l994t/F2_D9973_E-6_EC2-484_E-_B676-646_C309_B0283.jpg) (https://postimg.org/image/ngriv0nsp/)

(https://s20.postimg.org/py3a29zzh/7_F5910_DA-_E44_A-4087-8_D73-99_F29_A499_EC0.jpg) (https://postimg.org/image/e8zaeb90p/)

Convinced her to buy me the grill as it would be quicker and less hassle than going through the insurance. Even though it wasn’t my fault (my car was parked when I was in work!) I know my premium would be affected.....

Went for a blast over some of my favourite roads on Christmas Eve

(https://s20.postimg.org/n1jbv0iod/C9_EEC279-5_E6_F-49_FA-_A4_FB-_CBC7_A63_BCB82.jpg) (https://postimg.org/image/ew19wuufd/)

I ran out of talent long before the car did.  The conditions were appalling and yet the car just had so much composure and grip that at some points during the drive I was going considerably faster than I thought I was  :lipsrsealed:

Then last Monday just as we are approaching two years together the A6 broke down......fuel injector on no1 cylinder had failed

Luckily I have some awesome mates who did a towing relay and got me recovered to a garage. Initially the garage thought there was engine damage (it was a local one to where I broke down and more a spanner place than diagnostic).

They replaced the seal hoping it might have been just that but when started up the engine rattled and the car smoked.....a quick phone call to Topher @ Midland VW reassured me it was the injector and asked the garage to perform a simple test by removing the glow plug and cranking it over.  Diesel fired out of the glow plug hole which confirmed the injector had failed and stuck open. When they do this its a characteristic that the engine smokes and sounds as if its coming apart!!!

£265 later for the part and I was back on the road along with a fresh MOT

Covered over 200 miles since and all seems well.......I think I was very fortunate this time around   :lipsrsealed:

So today marks 2 YEARS's of A6 ownership!!!

I have now covered 28,000 miles
33mpg is the long term average
On the 3rd set of tyres
2 services
1 complete set of brakes
1 fuel injector.........

The A6 continues to impress with its all round, all-weather capabilities. I took it across some of my favourite roads over Christmas in some atrocious conditions and the A6 didn't bat an eye lid. I chickened out long before the car came close to it's limits. One criticism I would have, and I had it with my A3, is the steering lacks just that level of detail and feedback when pushing on. It's sometimes hard to tell if the car is going to grip or not. Other than that, for a 2.5 tonne Avant its fairly chuckable; also had great fun doing donuts in the works car park when it snowed :D

In terms of modifications within the last 12 months.....I did treat myself to an Rs grill which totally changed the look of the car. And then someone changed it again when they reversed into me and cracked it just before Christmas so I've had 2 in the space of 12 months!!

In October I had the map tweak so the car should be pushing over 300bhp (up from approx 285ish). Normally in such a big car with such a small increase, the difference can be hard to notice, but not with this! It picks up a little bit sharper and the top end past 3000rpm is very very strong indeed. Has the extra power contributed to the failed injector? Jury is out on that one seeing as injectors fail when standard so the fact it coped with an extra 60bhp for a few thousand miles is admirable. Age plays a part as the car has clocked over 101,000 miles.

What's in store for the next 12 months? I really would like a Wagner Intercooler so need to try and save my pennies for one of them. I still need to give the car a full on paintwork correction session as I simply haven't had the time to spend a couple of days on it.

Other than that I'll continue to enjoy it for what it does :)

The ONLY problem with a big Quattro like this is the fussiness over tyres and the resulting wear. I currently have an S4 Avant and I'm on a set every 10k or so.

Bad couple of months for your car Rhys? Looks a minor shunt, but paintwork and replacing that headlamp will likely cost a few.... :(
