Title: Andy's 16v Corrado (finally back in a Golf)
Post by: Andy-H on 25 October 2009, 08:19
Well Folks,

As I spend ages on here reading about what everyone else does to their motors, I thought I would share my experiences with you (plus I told Nick I would do this and I don't want to go back on my word )

Anyway, for those that don't know, I used to have a Mk3 8v that, although people slate them, it never let me down and was a good solid motor .

I put the Mk3 on ebay and offered it up with a silly high buy it now in the hope that someone would offer me a deal as I had said I was moving on to an older motor. Had lots of offers (a lot of sh!te mainly ) until this one really caught my eye . So along with some very good advice from Nick (horney) and veedubgti16v, I reckon I had enough to go on to make sure that I didn't end up with a complete lemon .

So, after many phone calls and a couple of meets the deal was done. I arrived there Tuesday afternoon in this.......

And came home in this............

Classic Green 2.0l 16v Corrado with 119,000 miles on the clock. Full stainless Magnex (which has seen better days but doesn't blow and is still in good enough order to last a while, but is on my "to-do" list. The only issue with the bodywork is a little bubbling on the rear arch which I'll get done in the new year

The first things I did were.......

Almost non-existant brakes
Wiper issue (blades not even touching the screen )
A ghetto fix on the throttle body where the return spring had snapped.

(sorry, no photo's of these things done)

Brakes:
Drained the brake fluid, water and mud out of the system and replaced with some new fluid only and I have brakes again (still think I'll replace the master cylinder at some point. But at least it stops

Wiper issue:
Replaced the wiper mechanism (ebay for £1 ) as it was worn and very loose. Now I can see when it rains

Throttle body:
Replaced the entire throttle body thanks to a guy on the Corrado forum. Now it ticks over OK

With those things done I was able to start putting my mark on it.

1. Smoked side repeaters

2. Full valet on the interior (previous owner was a smoker )

3. Clayed, 3 staged and tech waxed. (going to get some better wax for it ready for the winter).

4. Ride height was a little 4x4 for me  so off came the suspension (which I found that the shocks, springs and top mounts were all sh4gged ) and fitted a 40mm spring & shock kit with new bump stops & top mounts all round. What a difference

5. Bought some light tint spray and gave the rears a couple of coats to reduce the orange on the rear light clusters.

6. The wheels are not my thing so after a deal was done with RSCPK, I am the new owner of some 16" Brock B3's  2 of the tyres were bald ( ) so I replaced them with some 205/45/16, I then realised in my hurry to get the old wheels off that I had forgotten that the wheels came with 2 good 205/40/16's on so I now have different profiles front to back  :embarassed: going to get them done ASAP.

These pics were taken this morning just to let you know how far it's coming on (I will get some better ones soon I promise).

Future plans are to get the wheels refurbed (all kerbed at the mo) in a cream colour. Replace the drivers seat as the bolster foam has collapsed (seat isn't torn though) and get the rear arch sorted along with the bonnet resprayed as it is badly stonechipped (hence the bra).

I await your comments and abuse

Not sure what you're gettin' at there buddy but I like the idea and it's my car

The wheels that were on when I bought it had to go.........they were letting the car down. Anyone want to buy 'em

Not sure what I'll be doing next, only had it a month and I seem to have spent all my spare time on it  :embarassed:

Title: Re: Andy's Classic Green Corrado 16v
Post by: dTEA on 25 October 2009, 17:43
Exactly, its your car, so do what you want.  Just never been a fan of white wheels...or black for that matter...high polished or simple silvers always work best imo.

Car does look tons better without those other wheels they were  .  I'd say a drop was in order next...tighten up an already good chassis
Title: Re: Andy's Classic Green Corrado 16v
Post by: Andy-H on 25 October 2009, 17:51
I've already dropped it 40mm, but the fronts only having the 40 profile on make it look a bit high again . 45's are the right size for the car and I'll be changing them soon so they will fit the wheel arches better

Not wanting to go too low as the car handles great now and I don't want to ruin the ride

Going to go for the cream on the wheels, not a "I've got Bentley rims on" cream but something more traditional
Title: Re: Andy's Classic Green Corrado 16v
Post by: dTEA on 27 October 2009, 08:24
I've already dropped it 40mm,
Really?  Maybe its the pics but it looks really high still.  Look forward to cream n green just to prove me wrong!  Get some more pics up

Post by: Andy-H on 27 October 2009, 17:00
I'll get some better ones done and posted next time I'm out and about with the camera.

It still looks high because of the low profile front tyres

Hopefully I'll get a christmas bonus that'll cover the cost of a wheel refurb

I think it looks a good ride height for good ride/handling compromise.

As well as being lower than stock, are the springs stiffer?  Where was the kit from/made by who/how much?

looking stunning mate!
glad its going well for ya!!
and surprsingly i like it being green, not normally a fan of green cars!!
white/cream wheels work on the right cars imo!

The springs aren't much stiffer DH, a little less body roll but still absorbs the bumps

It's a -40mm kit all round made by G-max bought off the bay from a guy breaking his Corrado. He said they had only been on his car 3 months and looking at the condition of the kit I beleive him. Cost less than £100 delivered. I just waited until the right kit came along didn't want to go down the coilover route as I think personally it would ruin the ride.

Cheers Robz, I wasn't sure of the green at first but the missus had a Dragon green polo a while back and it was a nice colour so with this being very similar I went for it  If the wheel colour doesn't work, I'll just re-do them

Will be doing some next year, going to make sure I have the car done before the summer this year

Going to get a few ignition components changed this weekend, had a little hiccup in it on Sunday () but no major drama.

Leads, plugs, dizzy cap & rotor arm to be changed and hunt around for a coil to go on it.

Looks well good mate!

Coils are biatch to find and are muchos $$ from VW. What's the issue? I had to replace the dizzy on mine as the hall sender had started to fail.

Not really a big issue with it Nick,

Just died on me when out in it the other day and wouldn't start again for about 30 seconds. When it did start again it ran fine and has been fine since   :undecided:

Conker suggested the fuel relay which I have a spare of in the shed that I'll replace. The ignition parts I'm changing are to just give me piece of mind that they are all done. The last service in the book was about 8000 miles ago.

Thanks for the comments, need to get some better pics to post to show the car off, but sadly haven't got the talent you posses with the camera  :embarassed:

Forgot to mention earlier that I had made a little sub housing for the boot, just to improve the sounds a little. 2 minute job to take out if I need to use all the boot space.

You will notice the 6x9's in the parcel shelf  so while I was making the sub enclosure, I put some new infinity speakers in it and then covered the parcel shelf with some spare acoustic carpet to hide them

Today I received delivery of these items to put on. Just got to wait for the rotor arm and I'll get them on this weekend.

Decided to get a couple of pictures this morning at work so I had a bit more room to take them rather than on me drive.

And in this one you can see the suspension drop a bit better (and the fcuk up with the tyres  :embarassed:)

I have yet to find an angle of this car that I don't like

new pics are good mate...Seeing it with this lighting can see why you wanted to go cream with the wheels.  looks tidy enough with the drop as well.  Still very usable i bet

Certainly is Mate,

Me and the missus have just been out and done the big shop in it and no rubbing issues at all

I think I have a buyer for the old wheels so I might be able to get the wheel refurb done sooner as well  :smug:

Right,

Little update........

I did take some pics of this but for some reason the camera is playing up so they'll have to come later

Been to the garage today and had it up on the ramps for the following:

New front discs & pads

Replace the aged stainless exhaust with a full Milltek , found out that the old exhaust was Powerflow up to the back box which is Magnex. The powerflow part was goosed but the Magnex back box is still in good useable condition so that will be cleaned up and put up for sale

Fiddle about with the central locking on the boot

That's it for now, the new fog lights haven't arrived yet so that will be for another day

Title: Re: Andy's Classic Green Corrado 16v
Post by: Andy-H on 08 December 2009, 15:12
Actually it's quieter than the old exhaust which I'm pleased about Mate (does pop a little though on the overrun though )

F**k knows what's wrong with the camera , me and technology don't get on at all

Pity the fogs hadn't arrived while I had a nice dry garage to work in

Still, it's two more ticks on the list today
Title: Re: Andy's Classic Green Corrado 16v
Post by: Andy-H on 15 December 2009, 08:02
Well, I only managed to retrieve 2 pictures from the camera

First one explains the reason why the exhaust was knackered

And the second shows where it had started to go

Unfortunately, the pictures I took of the discs are not on the camera but they would have shown the 3mm lip around the edge ..........completely goosed

The tip of the Milltek stick out a little further than the Magnex did, but as the two exhausts wouldn't mate up then the milltek stays and the Magnex has been sold on

Right,

Got a nice Christmas bonus from work and I'm going to have the wheels refurbed after christmas in a cream colour  so I went on the bay and bought some scalpels and some cream colour 7yr outdoor vinyl

My 16v grill badge went from this:

to this:

I have to finish the trimming to get it looking a little neater and then move on to the rear badge when the weather warms a little

Right, the boxing day boredom has set in so I thought I would put one of my presents in the car

Took this knackered old thing out (sorry for the crap picture )

And put this in

It was nice to find that the person who put the previous stereo in only had a kitchen knife and a selection of hammers for the installation  Managed to sort it but was a hassle.

As I was still bored, I replaced this cracked fog.....

For this new one purchased from the Corrado forum

Then I put back on the newly re-coloured 16v grill badge

Cheers Mate,
The wheels will be done in January. I spoke to a guy from premier wheels near to me and over the phone has quoted me £70 per wheel for the refurb and colour. I think any more than that and I'd have to consider some new wheels  :embarassed:

HA!! I know what you mean about banging your head, I aint the tallest guy in the world but I do the same thing  and now that it's lower I sometimes end up rolling out of it  :embarassed: .

Have you still got those white wheels with the polished lip on them ??? they would look well on the Raddo

Just got a few niggly bits still to do Mate, got to take the rear drivers side card out today and give the window module a good going over as it can be tempremental sometimes but that's why I bought it, It's a project for me and I'll get there in the end. I'm getting a new drivers seat and brake master cylinder delivered soon so yet more ticks on the list

what else is on ur list other than ur wheels m8
Well Mate, other than the wheels (and putting the correct profile tyres on the front  :embarassed:) I have to replace the drivers seat as the bolster foam has collapsed, replace the brake master cylinder so th brakes are a little sharper, new door handle on the passenger side as the current one has broken in the recent freeze , also got to get a new electric window module to fit and new parcel shelf supports to go in as mine are broken  . Fortunately, a guy from Manchester has all these parts and is bringing them over in the next few days    so there will be a few more pictures up soon  Priority at the moment is to get the car up to scratch before I go mad with anything else. Then I'll know which direction to go in

Me too,
Bought it off a chap on the Corrado forum and he said it was painted Classic Green but when it arrived it looks darker like Dragon Green :undecided:.

Not sure whether to paint it satin black or colour code it as it's already smoothed ready for paint. Going to buy some headlight protectors and an uprated headlight loom off there as well as soon as I can.
Title: Re: Andy's Classic Green Corrado 16v
Post by: leeroy20vt on 28 December 2009, 20:35
do the headlight looms make much dofference on the corrado as the lights are a lot brighter than golf lol

Apparently they do but not seen any as a comparison so I can't really confirm that

Going to find out if I need a 2 or 3 relay loom and get one ordered ASAP cos I'm fed up of getting blinded by oncoming traffic

Yours may have already had one put in

I know what you mean Mate,

When I first got in mine, the driving position felt really strange, especially with the low roof  but after a very short time it felt really good.

Title: Re: Andy's Classic Green Corrado 16v

the driving position is awesome. i like the way your arm rests on the handbrake when changing gear, makes it feel like a sportscar

im glad i have the early interior tbh, its more mk2 whereas the late interior is more mk3  plus you dont get the hump on the back seats with the late interior. i can tell the 5th person to f**k off and walk lol

I think the earlier interior rear bench looks a lot better than mine  :embarassed:. I know what you mean about the "sportscar" feel

I also found that you have to keep an eye on the speedo as the speed creeps up without you noticing

Well, today is a good day.

After doing a pre MOT check it was found that the lambda sensor was buggered  so a new one was sourced and put in. Then there was a problem  it seems as though the same guy who fitted the previous head unit had also fitted a lambda sensor

Big big thanks to rubjonny for his help with the wiring diagrams and all is well again. Also turned out that the car was running really rich when idling so some lumpiness has gone. This now means that the fueling is sorted with the Corrado and will be (hopefully) a little easier on the fuel

Now it has another 13 months MOT on it and I suppose I'll have to tax it as well now

Going to pop into work in the morning to get the car inside and sort the broken passenger door handle and the faulty drivers window
Title: Re: Andy's Classic Green Corrado 16v

good news m8 i knew i forgot i got to sort something out passenger door handle out to the mrs broke it the other day there a guy on the corrado forum selling them 15 quid a side for the repair kit goin to order one tom

would u know if my raddo has a lamba/cat on it thought it was to old
Title: Re: Andy's Classic Green Corrado 16v
Post by: Andy-H on 16 January 2010, 07:23
IIRC Mate,

The cat/lambda sensor were only introduced in 1992 so I would say you're in the clear with this

The guy I bought the passenger handle off was from the Corrado forum and he has the early handle as well because he brought both types with him when he delivered the seat etc. Goes by the name of raddo-tom.

Can't remember how much it was though now  :undecided:

Got the loom off the Corrado forum, not the cheapest of things but I think it'll be worth it in the long run

I also popped a new battery on as well so the charger and extension lead can be put away again for the time being

Still got to get the drivers electric window sorted Robz,

Get me arse into gear and get the replacement drivers seat cleaned and put in.

Get me wheels refurbed in the cream colour to match the badges I've done and that's about it for this year as there will be lots of things crop up during the summer no doubt

I have some headlight protectors ordered from a guy on the Corrado forum cos the headlights are so expensive to replace that I'd rather spent £30 on them than £100 on a new headlight.

Oh, and paint up the badgeless grill and put that on when the mood suits me  :smug:

I've just been into Buxton to drop some people off and for anyone who has experience of the crap Corrado headlight power........get an uprated headlight loom   it's like fecking daylight now!!!

Next time I'm out at night I'll take some pics to show.......the difference is incredible, 1000% better

The loom cost me £50 posted Mate

But it came with instructions and I got it fitted in around 15mins   and by the way it was tonight, worth every penny

The car is running so much better now the lambda sensor has been done as well, just seems more responsive

Will do Mate,

Not sure if he's doing them from the forum any more but he does sell them from time to time on ebay . Apparently, you can't tell they are on when fitted but cannot use them if you have a headlight brow on.

He does them in clear, tinted and Yellow.

For mine, I also invested in a set of Phillips Xtreme bulbs and it made as much difference again. Not cheap at £20 a set, but they are still 55w and completely legal, they just burn brighter (probably at the expense of life expectancy).

Totally recommended.

Yep.

Alhough its been done some time ago, so the wiring/relays are getting a but crusty. Its nearly time for a refresh.

How are your wipers?   Have you sorted the other "Corrado Chestnut" out yet?

Title: Re: Andy's Classic Green Corrado 16v
Post by: Andy-H on 20 January 2010, 15:30
Yeah,

Sorted the wipers out more or less straight away, bought a complete new mechanism and they were still not contacting with the windscreen properly so I stripped the mechanism and shimmed it up to remove any play and added some aero wipers and *touches some wood* they work fine now

Just this drivers window now  ran the meter on the connections an I have power to the motor when I press the switch so everything is working now except for the motor so I'll have to source one

As you can see, not much has happened on the cosmetic front. However a lot of time and money is going into getting this thing in top working condition  (with regular polishing thrown in for good measure )

Getting me arse in gear and tackling the replacement drivers seat this coming Friday. Cleaned, dried and put in .

Hopefully the car will look loads better when the wheels have had their refurb as well

It's aleady down 40mm Mate

Gonna scuff these tyres off that I have on the front that are the wrong profile until refurb time (should be booking in this week if the price is right). Problem is I have found some other wheels on the bay that have caught my eye so I'll wait 'till they end before I go for the refurb on these

Not going to go lower with this with the roads being so bad around here

EDIT: also just got a window motor coming from Shaung60 off the Corrado forum so should be a busy weekend with the seat and all

PS. Anyone removed a seat out of a Corrado, never done one mesen so some pointers would be nice  :embarassed:

Hi Mate, yeah, the loom is much better

Cheers for the heads up on the seat  I'll give that a go when the seat is dry. The door handle was OK. Take the door card off, undo the screw above the door catch, disconnect the block connector inside the door near the window motor and then pull the handle out of the door . Might need a bit of persueding out as the seal sticks to the door a little. Oh, and it comes out lock end first

My rims are 16's Mate.

Gonna get these wheels refurbed Mate first (unless those others don't go much higher that I'm watching on the bay )

After that Mate it will be a case of enjoying the thing throughout the summer with minimal tinkering  :lipsrsealed:

Goodies found there are going to cause further modifications but that is a risk I'm willing to take

What size wheels are you looking at??
Title: Re: Andy's Classic Green Corrado 16v
Post by: Andy-H on 29 January 2010, 15:48
Well, after some valuable advice from Guy & Dubplate Dan regarding cleaning the replacement drivers seat I ended up searching round places like HSS and the like to hire a wet & dry vac and I was looking at around £30 for a days hire

So I decided to look up local valeters to see what sort of price I was looking at for a loose seat to be cleaned. Got a price that was a lot less than the hire cost of the vac and my drivers seat went from this ................

Amazing what a tenner can get you these days

The seat will reside by the radiator tonight/tomorrow morning until dry and then it will be fitting time

Title: Re: Andy's Classic Green Corrado 16v
Post by: Andy-H on 29 January 2010, 20:28
Yeah, the bolster is tons better than the current one Mate. This one also has the tilt lever and surround on it as well

I'll take some pics of the old seat in tomorrow before I take it out so you can see the difference.

The price was good as well, only took the guy 15mins and he also got a brew out of it as well . just goes to show that it sometimes isn't worth trying yourself, get one of the guys on here (if they live close enough to you  :embarassed:) to give you a price. You could be pleasantly surprised . By this guy doing it I have saved the price of the vac hire, brush and solution

Window motor hasn't turned up today so I guess that will arrive on Monday but to be honest, I'm not looking forward to doing it  looks a bit fiddly.

Like you're sat in a different motor Mate

As usual, the Corrado gremlins struck again .....it seems that every time I sort summat, another thing rears it's ugly head .

This time it was a fuse holder in the alarm system wiring that had decided to break internally and fugged up the central locking. Just a 5 minute fix but about an hour finding the fecker

In all seriousness I'd be confident someone will buy that.

Corrado seats are the lowest of the low, so it may be someone will re-trim it and give it a whole 'nother life.

Cheers for the heads up on that DH

I'll do some investigating, there is nothing wrong with the structure at all, just needs some new foam in it. Maybe someone off the C forum will take it.

Quick update,

I have got mesen into gear and have booked the car to go in on Monday afternoon and then pick it up Thursday night with a full set of refurbed wheels in a cream colour to match the badges done

On the negative side, the new front tyres will have to now wait until next month  :embarassed:. Ah well, another months drag racing stylee won't hurt . Also had the door card off today and looked at replacing the window motor mechanism................I've booked it into my brothers garage for a cash job  :embarassed:

Pics will follow once the car is back and cleaned

Funny you should say that mate.

After I posted the pic I noticed that one of the spokes wasn't totally covered with the cream so as I looked around them there are thin patches of coating on them so they are back in on Monday to be completely re-done

At least they have reacted quickly to the problem and are sorting it straight away...........the joys of a 12 month warranty on the refurb

Cheers Nick......to be honest, when I went to pick the car up when the wheels were done I was sh!tting mesen  but I think it really goes well with the Green

I decided this afternoon that I was going to sort the centres out as they were still the original grey

So after a bit of Green paint and some VW resin covered centre stickers. Better than before . Going to get some new Wheel studs for it and paint the fake studs.

And this is how it is currently standing on the drive. The better pics will come next weekend. Possibly popping over to Dubfreeze so a good place for some pics

Seriously love those wheels
I had cream badges on my old green Vento and was going to do the steelies cream before I sold the whole lot on. No pictures I'm afraid but it did look sweet with the dragon green paint
On a slightly related note there's a united grey mk5 GTI over here with cream brake calipers, cream leather interior and cream GTI lipstick but he painted his badges black and it works really well. Black badges made the few cream bits stand out a lot more. Could be worth a shot!

Well, had a good session on the car today. First off I painted all the bolt heads on the newly refurbed wheels, only took 20mins per wheel

Then the Lamin-X film arrived  As I've bought headlight protectors I thought I'd get something for the fogs and indicators

The front looked like this to begin with......................

And now it looks like this.................

The fogs are very much now "Chuffesque"

I have two sets of protectors for the headlights, clear for normal use and these light smoked ones for days as nice as today

So thats where I'm up to so far..........off to Dubfreeze tomorrow so I guess the wallet will take a battering

Bit of a boring update.........

As I mentioned before, replacement badges were purchased for colouring. So off I went yesterday to find some cream paint to match the vinyl and wheel colour. This took me to Halfords , which to my surprise, were very helpful and got me a near as damn it match for the cream.

So after some priming, painting, laquering and then going round with the artist brushes. The badge now has gone from a scruffy old badge to the one on the right.

And this shows the colour match that Halfords managed

Not started the rear badge yet but by the end of next week it should be done and on

Cheers chaps  really glad the colours worked together.

Going to wait a couple of weeks now and then get these Coilies and drop the lot down a little.

I'm not sure what to do with the badgeless grill now  :undecided: It is painted green, just the wrong shade. I bought it for when the mood suited.

Do I....

a. colour match it to the car.

b. Paint it black

c. Paint it cream

d. sell it

Decisions, decisions........

color match it. will make the wheels stand out more and give a much cleaner look rather than a cream grill.

Just the thought of doing it cream automatically rings alarm bells, but im more than suprised at how good your motor looks now !!! excellent colour choice, the subtle mods all around have set it off!! ...

Cheers for the comments,

I don't think I'm brave enough to do the grill cream

Gonna go for a colour match on the green me thinks and see what it looks like

Right Chaps

Got some paint matched as close as I could. Inside the boot say's LC9V (Classic Green) but this is nowhere near the same colour as the swatch samples .......nevermind, the inside of the car matches the outside so I'm not too bothered

Not the best finish, just done with rattle cans and I'll finish the shine once the laquer has had a couple more weeks to harden.

So what do you reckon?? I'm on the fence with this at the minute as I think I prefer the badged grill  :undecided:

Looks good but the cream badge grill might work a bit better. It's a tough one alright  :undecided: On the plus side both options look sweet :afro:
Title: Re: Andy's 16v Corrado - badgeless pics
Post by: Andy-H on 13 March 2010, 17:52
Yeah, I think the badged grill does look the better of the two. I suppose I can swap them around as the mood takes me. At least it's done now so another tick on the list

I've never understood people who change their grills to debadged ones...Why would you want to do that? Aren't your proud that you're driving a VW? Keep the badge, obviously :)
Title: Re: Andy's 16v Corrado - badgeless pics
Post by: kells on 13 March 2010, 19:27
looking good either way bud

just not sure on the wheel colour now tho.. i was on the fence with it and now im leaning towards not feeling it...  but car is looking great all the same, keep going man
Title: Re: Andy's 16v Corrado - badgeless pics
Post by: Andy-H on 13 March 2010, 19:45
If I had thought ahead and realised just how much hassle the wheels were to clean and to keep that way, I may have chosen a different route

Unfortunately, my photography skills are so limited that you don't actually see the proper wheel colour in the pics. Don't know why but they look darker in the flesh  :undecided:

The badgeless will only be on when I'm in the mood, you know when you have a car and you see it every day, sometimes you can get a little bored of it so this way I can change it looks a little . Maybe the badged grill should be painted green  :undecided: would maybe work with the badge.

Waiting for the call about collecting the coilovers now and then space the wheels out, should make it look a bit different.

Post by: Shady Pioneer on 13 March 2010, 20:01
I agree with Kells. The badged grill works much better with the wheels, helps break it up. Thing is the debadged also looks really cool, but not with the colour of the wheels.

I agree, never quite get the de badging thing plus it fits in with your car I think,
but can see it as a winter change looks wise :)

Title: Re: Andy's 16v Corrado - started on the engine bay
Post by: Andy-H on 27 March 2010, 08:26
I also started on the engine bay yesterday after the filter had gone in.

It was looking a bit "brown" under there.........this is how it started.

I had to replace the rocker gasket so everything came off. While it was in bits I de-greased the rocker cover and gave it a couple of coats of exhaust paint I had left over from me biking days and I thought I had best put the polished 50mm inlet I bought on  this also meant I had to paint the lower inlet.

I also got a polished rocker cover to go on but I decided that a black cover would be the sensible option

I have the valeting guy coming over to work on the 23rd of April to give the whole engine bay a good de-grease and steam clean, then I can carry on getting some shiny parts fitted.

Unfortunately I can't take the credit for that Mate   it was all Sam's work.

It just makes the rest of the bay look sh!t now

I've put the polished rocker cover on ebay to get some funds back for more bling

Not actually been out in it yet Chris, the missus is blocking me in on the drive .

I'm out in it this morning so I'll report back if there is any difference. I'm not sure whether it'll be the inlet or the Pipercross filter though  :undecided:

Yep, it's bl00dy embarrassing parking next to his, that's for sure Robz  :embarassed:

Well, been up to Buxton this morning in it and yes, there is an improvement. Seems to pull a little stronger, especially in 3rd & 4th but that could just be the pipercross  :undecided:. Also could be the fact that the last thing I drove was the works Passat estate  :undecided:

It's also a lot better being able to raise and lower the drivers window again  I also have added these wind deflectors recently but hadn't taken any pics of them.

I don't know whether I have the drivers seat in a funny position or what but I used to get a lot of wind noise around me ears but these have removed that little annoyance

With the bank holiday weekend upon us I will have the wheels off, calipers cleaned and then they will be sporting some green paint

I won't be starting anything today cos it's fecking raining again

Enough of it to see that they're manky Mate

They're a lot easier to keep clean when they're painted. I did the calipers on the Golf and they looked so much better.

Also need to find some brake pads that don't give off as much dust, every time I go out in it I have to scrub the flippin' wheels after

Might get some green stuff pads and see what they're like  :undecided:

First thing........calipers painted.

Cheers Mate,

I am pretty chuffed with it. Just got to drop it a little on the front (the FK coilies purchase fell through ) and get the rear arches rolled as there is a little bit of rubbing going on. Engine bay is getting de-greased and steam cleaned on the 23rd of this month and then I will continue with the weekly troubles that you get when you own a Corrado

I was quite annoyed when about 20mins after the clean a bird managed to splatter the bonnet with a massive sh!te  . Out came the bucket again.

I put a request in the Virtual modifications for a possible roof colour change.

I have a contact for doing something like this in vinyl for me but not sure  :undecided:

Not sure about the colour but I see where your coming from? Black maybe??

Post by: Andy-H on 04 April 2010, 07:55
Nah, going to get them rolled by someone who knows what theyre doing  :embarassed:

The rof colour is just a thought at the moment. The sunroof panel is a different shade of Green to the rest of the roof and it's a little annoying . I've heard that the glass roof out of the oldre Passats will fit so I might go down that route instead  :undecided:
Title: Re: Andy's 16v Corrado - Started on the engine bay

Not feeling the cream roof to be honest, seems like a step too far. As it is the cream really stands out against the green. Too much more cream and it wont have the same impact.

Boring update time again.

Having mis-diagnosed a noisy wheel bearing, further investigation into the noise/wheel shake showed that the bushes in the off-side wishbone are completely FUBAR'd  I have bought a complete new wishbone with ball joint which will go on this weekend.

Post by: Andy-H on 16 April 2010, 19:32
Well, easyish Robz.

I have been for the last few nights soaking all the bolts in WD to try and make the job go a little smoother.

Then today got the car in the air. First job was to slacken everything to make sure it would all come apart. First up was the anti roll bar bush........snnnnnnnnnnnap!!

Hmmmm,,,,,,,not a good start but what I have come to expect from a Corrado  My brother ordered me another one and I popped along to get them once the motor factors had dropped them off at the garage.

After a lot of WD, breaker bars and the loss of the skin from 3 knuckles it was free. The bushes were in a bit of a state

Then this was taken out of it's package

and all the original bolts that were left were cleaned up, soaked in copper grease and it was all put back in place

Sorry for the picture quality....they were taken with me phone.

I am thinking about buying the wishbone for the other side now but I'm going to have to wait for my knuckles to heal before I can do the other one

It did make me say some words I've never really heard before

When the bush snapped, I reckon that my fist, containing the ratchet must have hit the underside of the car at approximately 314mph

It is a good feeling though when you take some rusty, seized, knackered part off and replace it with new and shiney bits

Only cost a tenner to get done, given me a good starting point to sort some shiny parts.

Ordered the nearside wishbone today ready to fit next Friday.

Got to get mesen a tent bought now cos I'll be spending the weekend on the Bodelwyddon (spelling  :embarassed:) castle showground at the all types show
Title: Re: Andy's 16v Corrado - Started on the engine bay
Post by: Jimp on 23 April 2010, 13:11
Much better  How did he do it? Steam clean or special products and a bit of hard work? I've been struggling with the bay in my Vento and can't seem to shift some of the stuff even with de-greaser and bits. Bit afraid to get out a wire brush in case it just scratches the f**k out of the bay's paint.
Title: Re: Andy's 16v Corrado - Started on the engine bay
Post by: Andy-H on 23 April 2010, 15:31
He used a product called TFR (traffic film remover) Mate, sprayed that around the bay, agitated it with a brush in the stubborn areas and then steam cleaned it out .

For the price he charged, I couldn't have bought the products let alone hired the steam cleaner

Love this car and the work you've done to it

For the next time you clean the bay, if you got a pressure washer get hold of some Autoglym Motorcycle  Cleaner (better than the engine cleaner apparently) - spray on and leave for 10 mins and blast off.  Then spray on Augotglym Vinyl and Trim Care and leave to dry over night :afro:

Well, that's the other wishbone on  this time it went much easier than before but still have left pieces of my flesh on the underside of the car

The knocking has (so far) now stopped, the anti roll bar bush was completely fecked so that was replaced as well.

Popped on a pair of new numberplates as the old ones weren't displaying the BS number and they were looking a little bit tired.

Will be out and about in it tomorrow so I'll be able to tell if it has really stopped making the noise while driving.

It was a really good day Robz

The car ran great all the way there and back, the only snag now is the discovery that I now have auto wipers

Only occasionally, the wipers decide to all start working . I have to then move the control stalk to stop them......just hoping it's some crap in there somewhere that just needs cleaning up  :undecided:

Title: Re: Andy's 16v Corrado
Post by: Andy-H on 23 May 2010, 16:36
Well, the wiper issue worsened

Front and rear wipers going at it full time, the rear had also decided on it's own routine  . So before spending loads of money on a new wiper stalk, relays etc. I had a butchers at the wiring. Fuse box out, nothing wrong there, cleaned wiper stalk contacts and checked the block connector to see if that was dodgy. Put it back together and "hey presto!" they didn't move when I started the car..........then I let the handbrake off and the bl00dy things started going hell for leather again .

Turns out the handbrake switch is connected to the wiper motor loom so something in there isn't quite right but I'll have a look at that when it's cooled down outside a little, I've taken the handbrake switch off it's mounting so the wipers are behaving now but I have the brake warning light claring at me now

Then I've realised the fuel pump is on it's way out  it starved it'self twice the other day when I put me foot down and it's making a right noise now  so that's on order.

Finally, the arch rubbing and gravity defying front end have left me with no alternative but to purchase some FK coilovers that should arrive this week..........guess what I'm doing next weekend

A few things really Mate

Toying with the idea of removing the rub strips off the sides as I've heard they're only bonded on but I will investigate further before I tackle them. Doing a little something with the roof  :lipsrsealed: and going to start looking at performance me thinks

Wouldn't mind getting me hands on a full Cream leather interior  but I know what the cost would be

If your doing the rubber strips mate be prepared to start re painting, they are bonded on but with industrial strength glue, I wrecked my nearside doing it, but i do prefer them without!
Intersting plans with roof??

Well, got an early start on the Coilovers this afternoon and got the fronts on

Got measuring and the front is now set at 65mm down (I guess they will settle more  :undecided:)

I decided to not paint the springs Cream first though (sorry Chuff )

So the front used to look like this..................

Once they've settled I'll reset the camber so it doesn't completely sh@g me tyres.

Going to get the rears on in the morning and also put the brand new fuel pump on

Cheers for the comments guys

Unfortunately, the car wont be going anywhere for a while  :embarassed:. Going up Buxton to book it into the body shop today

I had some info off the C forum that the rub strips on the side were just resin bonded on . Right I thinks, I'll set to today and get those things off. I first soaked them for a couple of hours with some label remover to soften the resin.

Then I set up with the heat gun and started taking them off. Started with the small bits on the front wings and they both came off beautifully . A bit of polish and you'll never think there was anything there

Then the doors  These had been taken off before . One was siliconed on which was a nightmare to remove and the other had some sort of plastic resin bonding it  :undecided:. The true horror of this is that the previous removal person had used a screwdriver to prise the moulding off   which has left me with this............

The rear quarters were the worst, there has been a bit of bodywork there before but not a very good job has been done . This became more apparent when I removed the strip

Looks like I'll be carless for a while

Title: Re: Andy's 16v Corrado
Post by: Andy-H on 10 June 2010, 09:04
Yeah, I think it does Wayne

I was expecting a bit of difficulty with the car being over 17yrs. old but not quite this much

I found a bit of bubbling going on behind the rear quarter trim (explians how much came off!) and a scab on the bottom of the passenger door so they will all be dealt with

I'll see when I can book it in today........he does a really good job and has a quick turn around

The missus is picking up her new car tonight (Mk4 20vt) so I'll bod around in that until mine's done

IIRC,

Nick said it had a KR inlet cam in it. Just wondering if you wanted to sell the cam or is the motor destined for something else?

Cheers Fellas  When you up this way next Drew??

Well, after thinking to mesen that the 'rado had to go due to me changing jobs which was immediately followed by a persistant Chuff yet again making me see sense   It is staying...........

However, the car must have heard me . It decided to starve itself of fuel on the way home from a meet, not stopping, just spluttering. I pulled over and the new fuel pump I put on was making a noise like there was no fuel in.

I'm buying a new lift pump for the fuel tank and poppin a new fuel filter on whilst I'm at it.

A couple of pics of the 'rado with our local club at the motor show a couple of weeks back

Right, on with some gremlin fixing time

Lift pump took ages to arrive at the dealers  but tonight saw it replaced

I've not been out in it yet but it starts and runs so that's a good sign :afro:

I checked the fluid levels on the car at the weekend and the water level was low in the header tank  . Checked the oil straight away to check for mayo.................................none found, phew!!

Ran the car up while it was on my brothers ramp and spotted a leak around the water pump. So as a matter of course I have bought this.....

Along with the gasket so I'll get on with that this weekend

Well, been tinkering again

Was fed up of seeing the scabby old door handles and had seen some 'rado's with the early style Passat rears put on to de-lock them

I wasn't a fan of the square style of the passat rears so I looked for something else

Ended up buying some ate style Passat rears that needed some modifying but I like the challenge of making things fit

So, after some filing, drilling & tapping, along with a bit of masterful welding from a good Mate. These came off.........

It was Mate, cheap enough and fits perfect.

Only (I think) bought it for cosmetic reasons

Some of the plastic pipes were a little buggered so replaced accordingly

also got rid of that big plastic cowling over the radiator, been in contact as well (it turns out) with a guy who can supply a rad fan upgrade with billet brackets.

Where did you get the inlet manifold from bud? How much too?

Bay looks a lot nice, I want to do the same with my bay, or along the same lines. Cleaning it up and putting to better bits on it.

Got the inlet and a polished rocker cover from a Mate for £50.

Sold the rocker cover on as it would have looked too much  :undecided:. It's a 50mm inlet instead of the standard 44mm item.

Think I'll start and keep me eyes peeled for a green samco hose kit

amazing what you buy when drunk  :embarassed:

Cheers Dec :afro:

Well, decided that the rear seats were neither use nor ornament so out they came, along with the seatbelts, parcel shelf and the shelf supports.

When I had done this though I had lost all of my rear speakers  and the stereo sounded crap

I'm going for a complete re-trim to get rid of the old grey interior and get something done to match the whole colour theme of the car.

I kept looking at this.....................

And then I decided that this is what I needed to do (cue the noise of power tools, saws and hammers. Along with the smell of glue )

I know it doesnt match anything in there yet but it's a start. Also the shallow fit sub is about half the weight of a normal one

First door card 50% complete.

Still waiting for some piping to complete and need to do something with the door pocket/speaker mount.

Now both door cards are complete, might get rid of the piping though  :undecided:

Rear cards are done also.

A Peugeot 206 supply a very handy cargo net so that the rear can still be used as a boot

Not sure how to tackle the rear arch carpets though  :undecided:, answers on postcards please

Piping is no more  took some removing though, the adhesive was quite strong

Had a dark moment where I was going to rid it because I'm using it every day now for me new job but changed me mind last minute  Was going to buy a winter sh!tter but I'll just not go to work if it snows too bad

This will be the last interior I do mate, getting the original covering off was quite a task, my finger ends are feeling a little sensitive right now

Got some Cream leather seats in mind, just need to find the right condition ones

I also have a spare dash in the shed that will be sent off for re-trimming ( I don't fancy tackling that ).

Cheers Chris...............................it feels really nice too

One other advantage I've found with it is that the windscreen doesn't mist up as much :afro:

One downside to it is that although I gave it a thorough hoovering, when I first turned the heater on it was like a little black dust explosion coming out of the vents

Oh, two things actually. It needs hoovering weekly

Drew, the Mk2 is looking very nice indeed  bet you cant wait to free up the cash from the Mk3!!

Cheers Dom :afro:

Well, the front end has had a little makeover this afternoon

Any Corrado owner will tell you how expensive it is to replace the headlights, fogs or indicators on these so I have been running lamin-x on the fogs & indicators and I bought some acrylic protectors for the headlights. I wanted to remove the yellow (or p155 filled according to DH ) and I wanted to do a little something different with the headlights

A couple of PM's to LL and he sent me some of his protective film  . A little thinner than the lamin-x but much easier to work with (and cheaper too )

The front has gone from this......

And after a Joey mod and the light smoke film.........

Not a major change but I think it looks better

Oh yeah, I've changed the grill badges as well

Well, the other week I fitted black A,B, & C pillars into the rado to fit in with everything else I was doing. I also wanted to colour the headlining black to suit so it all came out

My ghetto fix on the roof lining was 2 tins of satin black cellulose paint I had in the shed

While the roof lining was out I decided that I was going to try and get the sunroof to work  Oooops

Completely buggered it . I needed to get one sooner rather than later as the panel was just sat in the hole

I had heard that the B3 or B4 passat estate moonroof was a near as dammit fit so I set about trying to find one of those as a rado one would be near impossible to find in good nick and the right colour

After failing miserably on many places to find one I heard of someone getting one out of a Mk2 seat ibiza....................so I bought one

And it fits damn near perfect

Title: Re: Andy's 16v Corrado - new hoops arrived
Post by: Andy-H on 31 March 2011, 07:01
Cheers folks :afro:

I'm runnin 7.5 on the front and 9 on the rears. 195's fitted on the front and 205 on the rear (gives it a little stretch so there's no arch fouling )

No spacers on the rear, that's just how they sit which I'm really pleased with  Just need to sort the massive tuck on the front  :embarassed:

I did think of running 9's all round but that would have meant running with no inner arch liner and lots of other problems that would have occured

Hi Daz,

Yeah, going for the Lupo set up on the wipers. they still aren't perfect but at least they clear most of the water away

Picking a couple of new bits for it on Wednesday night at the local meet then call the painter to see how the new frot bumper is coming on

Hope the Golf is running nice now. I've had to order another ISV for this today, just decided that it doesn't want to work anymore so it makes junctions/traffic lights/roundabouts etc. really interesting with no tickover

Right, a bit of an update .

Got given a spare front bumper so the old mind started going

I cut the numberplate recess out, got the soldering iron out and melted it into it's new place  I then started applying some filler

Smoothed it over and sent it off for a bit of a colour match :afro:

While it was there I measured up and made mesen a little bracket at work

Then I got the bumper back today

Took the old one off.....

And popped the new one on :afro:

You can just see the little bracket under the bumper.

And then spoilt it by putting the numberplate back on

It's an AGU code engine Wayne.

Chuff, not wanting to go down that route with this. There will be another car purchased as a runaround which may well be the dirty fuel

Well, turns out the head is completely buggered on this motor   Price of a good replacement head is somewhere along the same price as another donor engine. So I'm gonna start looking for another suitable donor and see what I can get.

At least I've got plenty of ancillaries to put with a new motor now so hopefully by the winter I will have found somewhere to store the car and get the old motor out and prep the bay for the new one arriving

Bought a few more bits for it yesterday so pics will arrive once fitted :afro:

That's a pain in the ass!... gutted for you.... was the engine sold as sold as seen?  no chance of giving it back?

Engine was given to me for nowt Mate

Thought I could salvage it but there was too much damage to the cam seats . Still, all the ancillaries are there and all I need is a block & k03s turbo and I'll be sorted

Seen quite a few good example, low mileage ones going for not too big money so gonna have a good search before purchasing in October  I currently have no spare room for another engine as yet

Happy hunting for a new one then... I wonder when good stock of 20VTs will come to an end with so many conversions going on these days.

Exactly Mate. Keep thinking about different powerplants to the 20v but it's a relatively simple conversion mechanically. The wiring on the other hand

Diesel was another option but don't fancy all the changes involved

See what pops up I guess

It's a great unit and popular for conversions as a result, If I wasn't so keen to keep my original motor i'd go down the same route...  I just wonder when they run out, bet the later engines aren't so straight forward to fit.

could you honestly tolerate a diesel chugging away under the bonnet of such a nice Corrado?

Thing for me now is that because I have everything else for it, I may as well go for the 20v. A friend has done a TDI conversion on his rado from a B4 Passat and happily trundles around at 65+ mpg but he admits it's slooooow

Modern ones are good but I always feel that they run out of steam early on  :undecided:

Just like how flush they sit with being mounted at the side of the wiper rather than above... looks ace, may have to have a play one day.  Quite happy with mine even though they look a little out of place, aero wipers on standard arms. look a bit too modern.

Cheers Buddy.

It's great having one again. This has been garaged for more than a year so it needs a few bits doing (brakes etc. but that'll be done when I get the keys to the lock up

I used this material on the parcel shelf...

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/260739430640?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649#ht_1099wt_1018

Only needed to order 1m of it so very cheap then I used spray contact adhesive and as I placed the material on I moulded it in with the back of my hand and it has stayed in place   The material has a little bit of stretch in it so good for things like this

A must for a Corrado tbf. I've kind of "adapted" my standard ones by bending where the spring clips on. It extends the spring so gives more tension on the arm against the screen. Its far better than before, but not perfect if I'm honest. The TT arms are not cheap if bought new from Audi, so ebay trawling or breakers yards are the best bet. The Lupo arms are more readily available and cheaper if you happen to find a couple being broken locally. This and an uprated headlight wiring loom really are must have items for a Corrado.

I was going to get a loom for mine again as per the last one but mine was a bit dodgy and occasionally drained the battery

I'm gonna give the nightbreakers a go before I update the loom to see if they help in any way.

Next up is a complete brake refurb and I need to find a leather repair company local to do some minor repairs to the rear seats.

Whilst waiting for the brake parts to arrive, I sorted the next Corrado issue........... the dodgy sunroof

Picked up a Mk3 golf estate sunroof locally and popped it in

While I was doing it I also turned the headlining black

Then started on another creature comfort

Then I decided to have a look at the issue of the indicators not working . The hazards were OK so I knew the relays were fine and all the indicators worked. I diagnosed that the stalk itself was pooped

This left me like this....

(http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/pp270/andy-mk3/Nov2013090_zps8288d46b.jpg) (http://s418.photobucket.com/user/andy-mk3/media/Nov2013090_zps8288d46b.jpg.html)

A bit of research showed that the later controls were a direct replacement (and they look a little better so I sourced them along with the cowl and fitted them).

The clocks are still out as there are some LED's missing from inside them  :undecided: :undecided:

Also removed the rear wiper...... surprised me how much the motor weighed

Cheers Guys :afro:

Well, a few teething troubles like the starter motor packing up and various exhaust rubbers deciding to relieve themselves from duty, all has been well......................sooooooooo

I wanted to move the washer bottle out of the engine bay, as it's a massive 4L bottle it took up quite a bit of room. As there was a redundant pipe from the original rear washer....it was a no-brainer as to where it could be put . I bought a smaller bottle for the relocation too.

(http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/pp270/andy-mk3/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpsd3d7cde2.jpg) (http://s418.photobucket.com/user/andy-mk3/media/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpsd3d7cde2.jpg.html)

This got me thinking about removing more from the engine bay so I made a false boot floor, removed some surplus items and fixed the floor down.

(http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/pp270/andy-mk3/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpse545c678.jpg) (http://s418.photobucket.com/user/andy-mk3/media/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpse545c678.jpg.html)

Ordered a battery securing tray that will be bolted into position with a sealed battery, also ordered a battery positive cable from an E36 BMW as they have the battery in the boot so should have enough spare

Then I ripped the front bumper off for some fettling

Right, another update...

After the all-types show it went a bit pear shaped for the rado. It all started wen leaving the show where I left a lot of splitter near one of the speed bumps  . Struggling to find a good replacement, a friend showed me that you can get a cupra splitter to fit if you're patient enough so put one on for the time being...

Then a few days after, the hoses started either bursting or splitting, they were rotten, when you squeezed them, they split so I had to replace the lot

Also replaced the ignition coil, HT leads, Dizzy, as there was a bit of a misfire.
Then the clutch slave cylinder packed up on me, the seal split but fortunately, this only happened as I got back on the drive after being out. Had to replace the cylinder and reverse bleed the system which I would recommend for everyone to do. So simple

(http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/pp270/andy-mk3/Rado%20pics/IMG_3208_zpsa9430352.jpg) (http://s418.photobucket.com/user/andy-mk3/media/Rado%20pics/IMG_3208_zpsa9430352.jpg.html)

Finally, I decided that the original power steering fluid reservoir was a bit too big so made a custom bracket in the shed

(http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/pp270/andy-mk3/Rado%20pics/IMG_3272_zps07822e61.jpg) (http://s418.photobucket.com/user/andy-mk3/media/Rado%20pics/IMG_3272_zps07822e61.jpg.html)

This allowed me to fit a reservoir from a Mk4 golf that I had lying around () to tidy things up

Back to the shady (literally) bodywork. The car has been affectionately called "fifty shades of Red" so I need to sort this. As we have recently moved house, I spotted a small body shop on the way to the gym. I decided to give them a try out of convenience  and I have to say, I'm really chuffed with the results. Got the worst bit done first...

Moving on from the engine debate, I'm continuing with the bodywork issues. The paint is very tired as previously stated and the plastics are a bit "faded" too

Got some "forever black" for the plastics and some auto finesse "triple" for the paintwork. I think it came out pretty good

The car had two dodgy panels, the tailgate & the passenger door. Found some rot free ones from a guy breaking one locally and brought them back to prep for paint.

Fortunately the new boot had also got the wiper/washer hole deleted so it saved me a job

Sent them to paint, got them back and fitted them on (old panels on the floor)

Really pleased how the smooth tailgate looks :)

So I still have the golf. I sold the coupe though.
I did an engine swap to an abf which was awesome

But with the COVID issues everywhere I got bored. Sold the ABF and now nearly finished doing this.

Cheers bud. Got a couple of little niggles to finish on the Mk2 but need a ramp for that. The corrado is very much a work in progress but I’ll get there 🤞🏼😂
