I have got the same prob on my 8V ( 1989 ), Checked the hoses all ok, so I think mine is a faulty  sensor on the back of the instro cluster - I've given up and learned to live with it!

I know its a cop out!!!!!!!!!!

Its an 1992 8V Digifant. Dirty engine in that pic but its very clean now. Cleanest ive seen in a mk2 for its age if i say so myself ;)

If the vacuum pipe to the dash was split or disconected, the sensor will see less or no vacuum. Why would that make your mpg look higher?, I thought that the lower the vacuum (throttle open) the less mpg, higher vacuum more mpg. Sounds like a faulty sensor, easy check of the pipe and connection to the dash, unplug the pipe at the engine and suck it. If you can suck thru if, split or disconected, if you can't faulty unit. Eather way, dash out to fix.

Can't say for sure on a mk2, on my mk1 it was a white/clear plastic pipe connected close to the throttle body. Should be the only small vac pipe going through the bulk head. (could be wrong  :-\) Anyone?.

Look on the picture that appears earlier in this subject, top right hand corner there is a little yellow cap ( where the brake servo pipe connects to the throttle body ) the thin clear plastic vac pipe connects onto a union here. it pushes into another rubber pipe.
