Paint contamination removal.
« on: 30 August 2017, 09:33 »
Hi all, Ive just bought myself a Silver GTI, good spec and I'm very happy generally. But the paint isn't in good condition, it has some overspray and something like rust on the flat areas. I have tried clay bar but it doesn't seem to touch it.. I have  a polish machine but what would you guys suggest to use, I don't really want to use anything too harsh unless I really have to.

Thanks in advance.

I would've suggested claying for the overspray but if that's not working, then polishing, but only after thoroughly decontamination with iron/fallout remover such as Iron X, and tar/glue remover such as Tardis or similar.  These will remove any embedded contaminants from the paint is a less aggressive manner, then follow up with claying, then machine polish.  I expect the rust is iron deposits which decon should take care of.  If it's proper rust then that's another matter all together.

On detailing product websites:

Look at CarPro Iron X and Korrosol for iron removers.

Look at Autosmart Tardis; Auto Finesse ObliTARate; CarPro Tar X for tar removers

There are plenty of others but that's a few pointers.

Thanks for that, the rust isn't actual rust, I've seen something like it before, I worked in a Nissan Dealership that was next to a railway line, total nightmare for us who worked there! cars got trashed.

I'll try the Iron X.

Ah stuff from railways is iron fallout.  Cars pick it up during transport anyway, so Iron X will sort that out.
