I wanted to start a build thread on here. Meant to do this years ago! First ownership post to be followed by lots and lots of quotes from other threads. It got interesting this year when I had some fun money to spend for a change!
Job done.
Picked up a cracking 1.8 GTi today. The drive back was a dream.
Looking forward to some happy motoring and good, like-minded, anecdotal banter on here.

New headlights and trick headlight bulbs

Replaced bonnet cable
Removed SAI pump and all fittings inc hardlines (with map decode)
N249 deleted

Extreme clean and wax up for winter. My arms are still aching from all the buffing! Looks the nuts (for now).

Something exhaust related has started to rattle/knock about at start up and buzzes at low revs. Heat-shield, silencer baffles, maybe the cat? Depending how serious it is, it could be time for an upgrade! :cool: :whistle:

Exhaust problem was only a heat-shield and a dodgy rubber mount. Fixed without much more fuss.
Got spending in the new year and added a 42draft catch can to the long list of things to fit in the spring / when I can be arsed.
Anni rims are all polished up, ready and waiting to be fitted when the weather cheers up a bit.
Maybe time for some more serious lows this year, funds permitting.

Spent the day over at TJGs replacing the door module and window glass. With all that out I was planning to fit metal window hangers, but it already had them :wink:
Did the work in less than 2 hours with a couple of tea breaks. Sorted!
All done I went to start the car up and it was just clicks, dull dash then nothing. Dead as a dodo...... :cry:
It had turned over slowly earlier that morning, I just thought it was because I hadn't used it much in the last fortnight. Sourced a new battery chucked it in and all seems good. Will just have to keep tabs on it, but thinking to maybe get the alternator checked out anyway.
Next job is oil service and fitting the catch can. What else could go wrong when I tackle these?!?!?!? :evil:

Fitted a Polybush dog-bone mount a couple of weeks ago. Not sure I like it so much, too much vibration on idle and same sensation when braking and engine speed has dropped. Wish I'd kept the THS I had on a while ago!!! Guess its back to standard or perhaps source an R32 one as they're stiffer :undecided:
Fitted some Lupo stubby mirrors at the weekend. They look immense.... in a tiny Lupo way!

Poly bush dogbone mount has been binned for a new genuine standard one (a £75 part!).
Got some 16" steels on the way to get the BBS nicely tucked away for winter. Might get two of em refurbed while they're off.
Took it out for a "proper run" the other day. It was bitterly cold, just didn't appreciate how much of a difference the cold would make. It was behaving like it had been mapped! BOOST!

They could do with a couple of new tyres, but proper stoked for a £90 set of wheels with 4 Bridgestones fitted :cool:
While the BBS are off I'll get a couple of them refurbed ready for the spring :wink:

This winter's project is source and replace the tailgate. Existing one has gone rotten around the tailgate handle :sick:
Found a clean V5 tailgate in correct colour with factory fit (notched) spoiler. I know the spoilers are a bit marmite for people, but this is my kind of marmite :cool:
In the middle of cleaning up the tailgate right now and sourced a brand new handle for it today too.
Looking forward to a dry day for fitment and giving the car a proper clean and going over with some wax.

Tailgate is coming along nicely. Need to stop faffing with it and just get the thing fitted!
Replaced gear stick bush, the big moon shaped one under the gaitor. I think its the best £3 I spent in a long time. Easy to fit bush, but for some reason it took me ages to lock shift tower down? Feels proper again and made a surprising difference to shifting.

Tailgate turned out to be a little bit ropey.... :undecided: Managed to salvage area around the handle but in debadging and cleaning it up I realised it had been repainted at some point. Repainted without removing the badges!!!! :huh: :shocked: I may just patch it up, fit it for now and look to get it repainted later.
Just putting together long list of parts for TT front suspension conversion and further tickle with the lowering stick. Have the 2nd hand bits I need so now pulling in the long list of new bits from the far corners of the car parts universe. Putting off buying coilovers for the minute, but will be going down the AP road to handling fun.
While that remains a little further off, I fitted black washer fluid cap and got t'other pair of Anni BBS refurbed. Wheels will be cleaned up, sealed and refitted in next couple of weeks.

Have all parts together now for TT suspension swap and AP coils fitment. Decided it was the right time for 312s up front too 😉
Booked in next Tues/Weds for the work. More than a little bit excited right now!

Suspension work complete. Setup looks great. Got a cheeky bit of camber up front too thanks to tt wishbones.
Ride is a bit firm. I'm not used to coilovers, so may just be the way it is, but I hope it softens up a bit!
312s look more appropriate behind the RCs now.

Repainted side skirts the other weekend.
Fitted my 42draft catch can today, after I'd tightened a loose front caliper! :S

Alternator loom and battery fuse box replaced recently. Design flaw!
This weekend I stripped out the remaining vac pcv system from under the inlet manifold. Looks so much neater now.

Took tb off and cleaned that too, haven't done it for a couple of years and amazed at difference it makes.
I also fitted 2x12mm wheel spacers to front end. Got a tiny bit of rub over some big dips in the road, will jack it up a notch this evening.

Jacked the front coils up a turn to see if that cures the rub. I'm not sure now if it was tyre on arch or the dshaft on the chassis. Will see if that cures it. I don't want to go too far upwards as I really like the look.
Had fun and games getting the wheels back on, with the spacers moving around. Need me one of those aligning stud things!

It now has a rust free tailgate and handle! The tailgate paint is a bit tired and I painted the handle before fitting, so will get them blown over in new year.

Getting the barrel out the handle was a b#$%@!
Currently has an ABS fault when going real slow, like manoeuvring to park. Got booked in this Weds for fix. Believe it to be sensor. Hope so, but gutted as they're only 5 months old.
Gave it a good clean and finished off with some "bd clean" detailer spray. Real nice to apply and buff back. Good stuff. Looks great.

ABS error turned into an expensive nightmare. Less said about that the better :sick:
Winter steels are on and the BBS have been cleaned, sealed and put away for winter. I jacked the front up for some winter (and up coming MOT) ground clearance but struggled with the adjusters at the rear end. I'll have another crack at it this coming weekend.

Well its decided to drop it's coolant. No visible signs of leaks.
Gong by funny smell inside car and small drop of water in footwell vent my money is on heater matrix, but niggle in my mind with it being the head gasket.
Time will tell. Have uv ink in coolant now and hoping to find source.

After all that time it held onto its coolant and only dropped about 5-10mm in the header tank. All very strange! I monitored the level every few days and before/after a trip. I had use of a UV torch but it was pretty inconclusive with my limited visibility around engine. Took it back to garage a couple of times and they confirmed it was from the bottom of the radiator. Changed it out today, fingers crossed that was it! :D

Well, it was the rad. No more coolant loss since. So have been really enjoying it up until recently.
Sad to say it developed stiff power steering when warmed.up, thought it likely the pas pump. It just started making a noise in that area of the engine, so thought it most likely the pas pump again. Removed aux belt and noise remains...... Sh1t! It's more audible inside the car, but not so much outside.
Leads me to suspect a rough bearing around the timing belt.
Have been left weighing up my options. I love the car to bits, but simply don't have the money to pump into it.
It's worth more in bits, but too good to break up. Sad times 😔

Sot it would appear the noise I can hear is the off side engine mount..... Transmitting noise into the cabin. Took a while to work it out!
Noticed the noise is only really audible inside the car. Took it out just now and noticed it also does it over bumps - when not on throttle - that can't be a bearing! Parked on a slope and the noise stops, where I guess the engine weight is transferred elsewhere. Panic over in that regard!
Remains up for sale right now. Now got to decide whether to repair prior to sale, or sell with this minor fault.

Well after not running it much due to these nasty noises and considering selling the old girl I managed to drain the battery down to absolute zero. Not even enough to lock with the central locking... :embarrassed:
Got a jump start and decided it a good idea to refit one of the lock barrels. Good job as it went dead again over a week or two sat idle.... :embarrassed:
Found those battery booster pack things don't work with a dead dead battery...
So managed to get in there with the key and fished out battery, exchanged battery booster for a charger and seem to have resurrected the battery. Got the car to a pals house and had some spanner time on the engine mount.
Took the engine mount off and fitted a new one, which cured the vibration in the cabin. Not the squeak.
Worked out the squeak was the pancake pipe swinging around and rubbing on stuff. Guess due to the saggy engine mount. Fixed with a washer.
Car is running again and I'm quite relieved it didn't sell. Had some really silly offers.

Since then it's been used infrequently but still puts a smile on my face when I do get out in it.
Today was mot day. Took it out for a good blat beforehand.... Then it's failed on a rear wheel bearing :-/ that was all, which I guess isn't such a bad thing. No advisories.

Bearing replaced and driven home. Hadn't noticed this one going, but failed due to apparent roughness. That's another half mile to add to the 1500 it's done in the last 12 months.
Its getting mothballed this weekend if time permits. Just working out how carried away I'm about to get with its hibernation.

It's been mothballed for the past couple of months. Have the battery at home on trickle charge.
I've been back to check on it after some recent nasty weather. Seems my rented garage has a couple of leaks :-(
Luckily hasn't actually dripped into the car, but have moisture traps to keep the damp out.
Will get a waterless wash next weekend.
Looking forward to rolling it out in the spring and getting it cleaned properly!

Well. It was still there when I last looked.
The rented garage has several leaks, but it's only a temporary thing.
Am buying a new house with garage and drive. Can't wait to get car home and tucked away. It'll be such a novelty to work on it at home. Working on a car at roadside is not fun! I am nearly 40 and never owned a driveway or garage in my life. Bring it!

I'm planning to pimp up the man cave / garage. Lots of lighting, fresh paint and get some industrial levelling stuff on the floor. Also get my tools in a proper tool chest or out on display :-D

Not much to report. Car still tucked away. Moisture traps doing their thing. Few drips on car from dodgy roof in rented garage, also really surprised how dusty it's getting too.

Well its been resurrected today.
Fired up first time and driven to its new home.
Discs were very badly corroded and paintwork in a grimy state as the lock up wasn't exactly water tight!
Spent a couple of hours cleaning it as soon as got it back. It needs the full works really but have other priorities on house to do before I can get away with a day "playing" with the car.
Just need to clear the garage now and get it tucked away.

Popped off the front arch liners and cleaned out the compost. Flushed through with lots if water. This job should be on the maintenance schedule!

The car is doing me proud. All apart from the noisy ac compressor. It works but makes a racket when cold, and bit of a rattle when car warmed up.
I'm using the golf daily at the moment as my other money pit (imported subaru legacy turbo monster) is on my driveway in bits.
That is meant to be my daily and the golf was meant to be tucked away in the garage! :-D

Carrier panel off and rebuilt with new metal clips. Waiting to refit at weekend and charge battery which has strangely drained with car in bits.

Got the window carrier rebuilt and fitted back in door. Moment of truth when firing up the window mech, its alive!
Will finish this job off tomorrow am by sealing the panel back in place and refitting the door trim.

Much head scratching before I realised the inner window seal top strip should stay on door and trim panel hangs on that.
Wasted 30 mins of my life stuck on it!

She's all tucked away with a SORN now.
Started stripping out bits and bobs for some winter tinkerings.
Part way through front arch replacement and with front end in bits I'll do a whole lot of other stuff.
It's very cramped in the garage but so nice being able to pop out for 30 mins and work with it off road and secure.
My missus compared it to that ending scene in Sean of the Dead when he pops out to the shed to see Mike :)

Worked a treat. Shame was the bicycle inner tube I had kicking about had a lovely big hole in it and initially glugged oil out all over the auxiliary belt etc :'(
Had my trusty helper (aka my 5 year old son) swinging around on the steering flushing it all out for me.

The car is thoroughly in bits now. I've delved deep into the head to remove and replace cam chain tensioner. Not a job for the feint hearted!
Me > (my comfort zone)
Have it all out (tensioner and inlet cam) ready to clean sealing surfaces and start wrestling it back together. Exhaust cam left in situ to retain timing etc.
I plan to have new tensioner in over the weekend. The rocker cover isn't going back on immediately as I'm getting that and inlet manifold powder coated.
I hope to clean up some of the aluminium engine bits that have started going a bit fuzzy. Have some ACF50 grease which I'll apply lightly once they're cleaned up.
I'll also chop in and fit a cheeky vent to arch behind intercooler.

Tensioner fitted.
Cams and bearings back in and all torqued up. Cranked engine over using a breaker bar and socket, and all good.
Fairly straight forward. Just lots of parts to keep track of!
Now on to the rest of it all :)

Inlet manifold is off and stripped down for powder coating. Need to clean mating surfaces on that and rocker cover before I drop them off.
I've pulled and re-routed the wiring harness to tuck away the injector portion under the fuel rail.
Also found a slight coolant leak at the water temp sender housing. Might be the o-ring has perished slightly, it's oem and not that old, but sensor fitment always seemed a bit vague in the housing.... :/

It's coming back together now.
Replaced degraded coolant flange that feeds the oil cooler... it kinda fell apart on me.
Also replaced o-ring and clip on the temperature sender.
Waiting miniature cone filter to complete deletion of fuel vapour canister.
Black crackle painted the throttle body and routed boost gauge to that top fitting.
Have deleted the hard pipe and tucked the injector loom, just need to extend a couple of sections as they're too tight for comfort.

Relay unit deleted from bay.
Injector loom tuck almost complete, just need to extend the harness slightly for injector connectors. Solder sleeves in progress at the dining table! :)

Under bonnet now done apart from repairing damaged connector for MAF and revisit / tidy up around n249 delete.
Sat in it for first time since November ish. Can't wait to get it back on the road now!

All back together now, with resistors built into oem mating connectors on all deleted items.
Was planning to fit battery and turn it over today, but the weather had other ideas! Will try steal away some time tomorrow. So close now

It's alive again!
Fired up eventually and died a couple of times. Then idled OK when up to temperature.
I was beyond nervous with the key and panicked a bit when it started stuttering. Quite relieved but it'll need a good run sometime soon.

Found a slight leak at pas reservoir. Not sure if the pipe fitting has cracked or the pipe has a split. Think I'll replace the reservoir and trim the pipe slightly just to be sure.

Never fully resolved the pas leak, might tackle it again over the winter months. For now it's re-taxed and will be finally reassembled at the weekend for use over next few months. Ran out of funds for paintwork, but just want to drive and enjoy it in 2018!

Retaxed and taken out for a spin at the weekend. All good. Then used it for commute to work today... Had to stop not long after leaving home as CEL came on, with 8 fault codes!

I had cranked it over without the fuel pump fuse, which may explain some, but the SAI has been coded out, odd that came back. I also recently deleted evap canister, had hoped resistor would do the job! :(
All codes cleared and not come back since.
It also made some funky sounds when I parking it up, seems my half refitted bumper (no valances) results in a rubbing arch liner :D

SORN and tucked away for winter tinkerings. No MOT this year as EML on, suspect original Sai delete isn't quite right now after I redid resistor and connectors, and evap delete may need coding.

Tucked away again for the winter. 0 miles last year - probably zero miles in last 2 years to be fair - other than occasional trip on and off the drive to keep the old girl moving.
Started it up the other day, for the first time in several months. Fired up, idled fine and got up to temperature well. I know it was up to temperature as the fans came on and made a bloody squeaky racket! :D Minor coolant drip near the coolant temp sensor, quick nip up of the jubilee should have corrected that. Could have an exhaust leak as sounds a bit boomy :evil:
Still have plans to get the bumpers painted, and make some minor tweeks to external styling - deep front splitter and poss paint the central grill black.

Covid got in the way. That's my latest excuse anyway.
Its been parked on the drive since coming out of hibernation in the spring. Now tucked away under a fancy car cover to keep it nice until funds and time allow to get it back on the road again in 2021.
It'll be tucked away in the garage again over the winter months, so I've been getting everything together for a major DIY service.
I just bought some nice honeycomb grills for the 3 positions in the lower bumper. On the way from USA, should have them at some point soon.
I'm also toying with the idea of a plasti-dip DIY respray with one of those HVLP sprayers. That flat Audi Nardo grey fits the bill, but may prompt a change of wheel colour. I'm thinking Candy red.... :evil:

It's up on jack-stands waiting some TLC.
I replaced some of the delete resistors, hope that cures the CELs.
Sideskirt is off as adhesive failed, needs cleaning refitting.
Will get fluids changed out and then put it in for an MOT. Insurance renewal is due early April, so I hope then to get it taxed and back on the road again.
I've got an EV lease on the way, but need to keep my inner petrol head and car tinkerer happy :grin:

Engine flush, oil drained and filter change.
While under there I noticed a bit of weeping from around the oil level sensor. Will change that out before refilling the oil :smiley:
Had it running for around 30 mins without CELs coming back again, hopefully the resistor change fixed that.

Started to flush the coolant; Drained what I could, rinsed through with water until clear. Refilled with water, ran it up to temperature, drained and flushed again. Garage had previously used yellow dye stuff :sick: I want it cleared out before I put proper pink G12/G13 coolant in.
Booked in for an MOT next week. Starting rebuild to get it all ship-shape. Where did I put those number plates...... ?!?!!? :laugh:

MOT passed! First time it's had one in.... I lost count.
Will be so nice to start using it again!

Side skirt repainted and refitted.
It'll get it's first taste of proper freedom tomorrow on the commute.

Power steering 1
Seems the power steering is almost inoperable at manoeuvring speeds. Will do a bit of fault finding. Has fresh fluid and was bled. Have a feeling I'll be replacing the pump.

EVAP delete is proving tricky. Fault code 16825 keeps coming back, even with a resistor fitted. I'm unsure now if it requires coding out. Will investigate :nerd:

Taxed and insured.
I'm lining up with local body shop for the bumper paintwork.
Next on the DIY repair list is to fix the front drivers seat, it's developed a rattle. Not the usual (mallet) fix to the seat mechanism metalwork, it's the plastic guides in the front bracket, they're worn out. I've got part numbers but no source;
1J0881203 or 1204.
Does anyone have inroads with VW parts supply?

Parts ordered from Skoda Parts. FedEx was £20. I bumped up the order with some other common clips and small bits!
The driver's seat is out and waiting for the bits to arrive.
Seat out was a good opportunity to get busy cleaning the hard to reach bits of carpet.
I realised the clutch rest is sitting off again, one of the tabs has snapped. Bit of a weak design, have attempted a plastic weld using a piece snipped off from elsewhere.
Got a quote for the paintwork, came in at £500 both bumpers, tailgate and lower half of drivers door.

Forge TIP fitted and rebuilt the DV.
TIP wasn't such a fun job, ended up under the car with arms up the back of the block. It also had to be trimmed slightly, bit nerve wracking considering the cost :laugh:
With it all off I checked the turbo for bearing play and it's still tight.
Paint in a couple of weeks :cool:

Paintwork done. Generally pretty happy. Can't argue for £500.
Front bumper remaining to be rebuilt. Picked up a switch happy us spec rub strip to prep and paint. Just need a spare weekend!

Fresh MOT after a new fuel filter and genuine fuel return pipe replacing the leaky one. Under pump pressure it was dripping fuel, I had no idea.
700 miles covered this last year. Paint work, timing belt, forge TIP, seized caliper... It's been an expensive year!

Not done many miles over the summer. Had hopes of taking it to a show or two but life gets in the way!
It still goes like a rocket but developed an occasional misfire on cyl 1 and 3 under load. I swapped the coils around, cleaned the MAF and noticed the earth point on the rocker cover had also been powder coated over. Cleaned it all up and it's not complained again since. Fingers crossed remains ok after a bit more use.
ABS module had code 01314. Ive done some reading and it may have been related to the misfire...? Cleared and will monitor.
The interior lights again seem to work when they choose. It often doesn't acknowledge boot or either door open which makes me think a common fault like wiring or the comfort module fault. Lots of vortex chatter about corroded wiring in footwell, I had a look and can't see anything obvious. Also bad soldering in the CCM..
I'll add that to the list over the winter along with fitting the side mount IC and getting the vented rear brakes refurbished for fit.
