Strange grinding noise. Any ideas?
« on: 25 October 2009, 10:19 »
Hi all

Yesterday, my Mk4 started making a grinding noise from the front nearside wheel area. Through trial and error, I've figured out that it only manifests itself in the following situations:

  • Only while decelerating at low speeds (less than 20mph)
  • The noise stops when accelerating or maintaining a constant speed
  • It also stops when the clutch is depressed or if I change into neutral
  • It doesn't make any difference whether I'm travelling in a straight line or turning hard in either direction, so I think that rules out a faulty wheel bearing.
  • Doesn't make any difference whether I'm braking or not, so doesn't appear to be a seized brake caliper etc.

Any ideas what this might be? I'm suspecting it could be a dry joint but have no idea what I should be checking.

Thanks

is it definitely coming from the wheel area or could it be a bit further inwards around the gearbox?

It's loud with the passenger window open, but barely audible with the driver's window down, so I'm pretty sure it's something over that side of the car.

Yes, it's that sort of sound: like a hub grinding, metal on metal.

I'm at the limit of my understanding, but if it stops when I put the clutch down or change into neutral, does that suggest it's something between the gearbox and the engine?

It only seems to happen when the wheels are driving the engine as oppose to coasting, or the engine driving the wheels.

I've just checked the CV boots, and they seem fine.

I think I've found the problem though. Have a look at this video:

The brake disc spins around independently, despite the car being in gear. It also wobbles around quite a bit.

Any ideas what would cause this?

theres no screw holding the disk to the hub!
take one of your other wheels off and you will notice a screw holding the disk in place!

Right you are -- thanks!

Just ordered a couple from VW. Hopefully that'll solve the problem!

That wont be your problem as the wheel bolts hold the disc on, all the small screw is doing is keeping the disc in place when you take your wheel of.
Sounds like a transmission problem to me.
