Title: e36 M3 3.2 evolution
Post by: tweed on 12 August 2013, 23:27
Got the car and had a leak. Done a bit of research and knew what it was before I bought it. (Solenoid seals) So I knocked him down for repair cost, then got it home and fixed the leak for free

car is very clean with no rust. About to hit 62.000 miles. Lots of history, etc, etc.

yesterday I noticed it has a snapped coil spring on the front driver side. Its on the end so didnt stand out as it still sits level.

So after searching on forums ive gone for a set of HSD coilovers. They are preload adjustable and camber rollerball top mounts. Kit also comes with adjustable drop links.

Will upload more pics when im home on weekend.

E36 m3's are becoming rare, goods ones anyhow. Id like one tucked away in the garage. Nice colour that one also

Cheers guys.

Taken it off the road to do some work on it

part list
simota carbon induction kit (dyno proven 5/9 gain) standarx box gets very hot apparently.
HSD mono pro coilovers
reinforcement plates
input diff seal and two output diff seals
oil filter
vanos filter
parts I still need to get
exhaust solenoids
poly bush kit
once jobs are done and car is on the road, ill take it to a dyno to see bhp. The airflow meter and throttle postion sensor can loose some power if they are tiered. They are expensive so im not just going to replace them if they are fine.

it also needs tracking doing  and front disc's feel warped when hot, but this is pad deposits left on the disc. Im going to take them off and machine them flat.

I got a race this weekend but will upload a pic of the coilovers.  Pure awesome.

engine hp is 321 but most make 310/315. After the box and map I should get somewhere between 335/340bhp.
Cost about £1500

That has to wait because I need new helmet thats gonna cost a lot with a custom paint job. Also I need to build a cnc barreled engine for my kart.

Racing comes first lol

oh just need to get the powerflex bushes and im ready to start fitting everything. I go on holiday this friday so wont update for few weeks.

I just spent £600 on another engine for my kart as I was in airport for holiday.
Im now abusing the free wifi and found this. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/121179689932?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/121179689932?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649) as you can imagine I haven't really got the money. But I can afford it  ill sneak a bid in on the last 10 secs. Hopefully I win it.
Then all I need is a alpha N map from evolve and should see about 340/350bhp from a N/A 3.2

lets hope I win it.

So the airbox went for way too much  can get a new one for a little more.

I have now just purchased a set of brembo 4 pots, just been recognised and new pads fitted. I need a set of e46 m3 floating disc's and they are on. All ready got Goodrich hoses.

After reading Performance BMW write up on vibra technics engine and gearbox mounts for a writers e46 m3 I've decided to get some for mine. Ordered their engine mounts but unfortunately they dont make the gearbox mounts so settled for some AKG polly gearbox mounts.
Gonna get a standard doughnut bush for the prop shaft too.

Im also selling up the kart  so the carbon fibre airbox and alpha n might happen a bit sooner.

All I need now is the e46 m3 325mm disc's and powerflex bush kit.

Hopefully start putting bits on in the new year once this dreaded winter has past.

Looks smart! :)

Good call on the hsd's! I run driftworks custom valved & sprung hsd's (DW cs2) on my 200sx and theyre the titties for the price. " years on and the collars arent siezed and the only rust is on the helper springs.

I started reading about coilovers for the m3 then see the hsd's so started reading up on them and all the 200sx boys had nothing but good things to say about them so I was sold lol

No its not a gt. Its a evolution individual that cost £46000 when ordered  so you can imagine its got some optional extras.

I paid £6400 which is a lot but it is only on 62,000 miles and has pint paint work and mint body. Its also the 3.2 and are becoming rare.

E36 m3 are cheap if you get a 3.0 or a vert.
If you can find a 3.2 individual with low miles under 6k ill buy you it

New on the list is ARP rod bolts and some ACL shells. Shouldn't be no more than £300 total.
Also want yellow stuff pads all round. £170
Still need e46 discs £300
Still need powerflex kit £300
Then around spring, build time

Oh maybe strut brace too

Didnt take pictures of install or of the pollybushes but here it is back together and now turned around in the garage to start the front end

(https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5516/13934680696_b0b2e67433_b.jpg) (https://www.flickr.com/photos/59145949@N03/13934680696/)

So now its full service with all filters changed and new plugs, along with pollybush front, ARP rod bolts, vibra technics engine mounts and polly gearbox mounts. Got to fit the quickshift and new doughnut bush. Think I will get a e46 quick rack and new track rod ends. Then fit carbon boot and suede steering wheel, then back on the road and into the paint shop for boot and few touch ups  happy days

Yesterday I took off exhaust and heat shield to get to the prop to change coupling
heres the old cracked one as I expected. (https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5237/14227535523_d7b543c520_b.jpg) (https://www.flickr.com/photos/59145949@N03/14227535523/)

Ive left the prop down for when my UUC DSSR turns up so I can do the quickshift.

Also changed the gearbox mounts for these AKG mounts (https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5151/14204096941_425bae2437_b.jpg) (https://www.flickr.com/photos/59145949@N03/14204096941/)

I wasn't sure to use these or not but after seeing a review on youtube with a guy and his z4m with them im convinced I will love them. He says you get a vibration at idle but soon as you're over 1500rpm its smooth. He has the AKG engine mounts too but ive gone for the competition vibra technics engine mounts.  Should be fine :)

Would of done more today but weather is good and spending time with the missus.  (Not out of choice)

So I quickly bought one from ebay with fresh powdercoating.  Guess what? Its cracked! Seller has posted another straight out and says no cracks but not powdercoated.  Should be here friday.
You can see the crack on the driver side mount. (https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3873/14353124495_db272f3a86_b.jpg) (https://www.flickr.com/photos/59145949@N03/14353124495/)

My mate has took my old subframe to make reinforcement templates so that he can bring a tig plant home and weld them in on weekend.

Then finally my UUC DSSR (double sheer selector rod) came out of custom (https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5313/14332157214_a0cf269fa1_b.jpg) (https://www.flickr.com/photos/59145949@N03/14332157214/)

total cost of that was about £130 including custom charge. Do I think its worth it? Hell yeahhhh

Here it is fitted (https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3849/14331156942_4f6c276e9e_b.jpg) (https://www.flickr.com/photos/59145949@N03/14331156942/)

My shifter is the ebay 6 speed quick shift. I fitted the Delrin carrier shifter bushings and then the uuc dssr. With all that and the gearbox mounts, its very tight and notchy.  Its epic!
I then put on the new doughnut bush and put the prop back on.

Then I stripped the bottom end to inspect the original shells and chance them for the ACL shells and arp rod bolts.
To be honest I did not need to change them. But I had the acl' so put them in. (https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2926/14166577928_11deb966a7_b.jpg) (https://www.flickr.com/photos/59145949@N03/14166577928/)

What were the old shells like?
Also I take it the sub frame is a well known weakness, what is it that causes it to crack I cant quite see where the load is coming from.
Do you plan to weld a bit on both sides or just one?
Looking good

Old ones where really good to be honest.  They are not the problem though its the standard bolts. They stretch and then you get worn out shells. I just changed them because it was apart.
Yrs its a well known issue! It comes from the engine just twisting and torquing.  Its mainly driver side and the e36 engine is angled so maybe that side takes more load? Once the driver side goes then the passenger side goes. Also fcuked engine mounts can cause this.

Due to the angle of the mounts you cant go on top! The holes wont line up. We are putting 3mm stainless on the bottom and then making a gusset.  You will see in due time

Put in my studs as its a lot easier and cheaper using these than having loads of different spacers and different wheel bolt lengths. So obviously put on a bbs rc 042 with 245 40 17 tyre, that needs 20mm spacer to clear the coilovers.  (https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5116/14396837581_938e7d58eb_b.jpg) (https://www.flickr.com/photos/59145949@N03/14396837581/)

Next was putting the car back together.  An absolute pig of a job in a little garage. Exhaust and prop etc was a nightmare with the back wheels only just being off the ground.
Cant remember if i mentioned already but it has all new exhaust mounts/rubbers and bolts etc.
At this point of the build I had no choice but to drink plenty of cider :D made it a lot easier.

Anyway got the car back together, put some motul sae 75w140 competition oil in, Then cranked it for a while before connecting the plugs.
So the time come to start it. Very worrying at this time as i had so much going through my head about bottom end. Did i torque them up? Will it spin a bearing? Etc.
I turned the key and it fired straight up, no noises, not lumpy, i was over the moon lol.

Finally got the car out the garage.

I couldn't resist no more and had to drive it. After letting it warm up I gave it a bit of right foot up the road and my happiness soon disappeared. The car just didn't perform. The vanos wasn't working. After a quick inspection I noticed the plug for the inlet solenoids was loose, so I plugged it in. Ran it on TIS and wiped all codes, took it back up the road and, animal :D

Front 0.0 toe
Rear 0.2 total toe in
Front camber 3.2
Rear camber 1.5

Shortly after this i realised the car was undrivable.  Was a combination on 245 tyres the front camber. It tramlined everywhere and it wanting to swap lanes at 100+mph was scary. I put the front camber to 2.5, raised the front 20mm and put on some new goodyear eagle f1's.
It now handles very well.

next up are the seats. Ive got a filler and a scuffmaster kit to make them as new. After that will be H&R anti roll bars. Im thinking about getting nankang ns2r semi slicks in 120 rating too. Then hopefully ill get the carbon boot painted and put on sometime soon too.

Small update
15mm rear spacer. Need arches rolled more as they rub. Will get this done when I get boot painted.

really needs painting, hopefully get it done soon. I'll be leaving a strip of carbon showing on the lip of the spoiler.  Still not sure on it yet.
Fitting was easy. Lots of drilling and grinding with dremal to get lock mechanism in and working.

Still need to do seats, just been lazy really. Maybe next weekend.

Finally have sounds! When I bought the car I didn't even consider checking the stereo.
After a little while I tried to play a cd and it only played out of the door mid tweeter. I thought it must of had a different head unit and PO must have quickly put a old one in. Turns out after inspecting the wiring, it had no speakers! I managed to get some footwell speakers and rear 6x9 from a fellow cutter at a good price.

Next up was a brake overhaul.
Thought the yellowstuff where ok but wanted better and the haulfords 5.1 just wasn't cutting it for me.
Went for carbotech xp8 front pads

With yellowstuff rear pads and rbf600 fluid.

I've put about 2 litres through as im having trouble with spongy pedal at the moment.
When bleeding rear fluid is solid and good. Both front calipers have tiny air bubbles.  Cold brakes the pedal is firm and high bite, but once warm the pedal gets spongy.  I'm thinking that the air is expanding inside as once cool its firm high bite again.
Ive ordered a vacuum bleeder and some more fluid. Hopefully this will sort it. If not I may get a AP brake master cylinder from MSmotorsport.

Love changing bbk pads. Much easier.

So I sold the square BBS RC setup and put on the standard wheels. The car began to tramline and understeered again. I knew I had to go square again but this time with the double spoke wheels.

Got tyres before wheels lol.

I bought two 8.5" wheels separately from ebay quite cheap. One was good and one was in a state!

I didn't take pictures when I sprayed the wheels. Its a job I hate! Well the prep work I hate. Spraying is the easy bit.

Pretty sure the front has settled down after that pic.

I have 20mm spacer on front and 15mm on rear. Rear arches are rolled and no rubbing with the 235 40 17 tyres. These do messure 245 across too.

Also I advice anyone that fits R compound tyre to do a heat cycle first of all.
Basically you go out and drive as hard as possible to get the tyres very hot. To the point of them going off, then cool the car down and park it up for atleast 48 hours. I did a week.

I finally got round to painting the carbon csl boot. I know most people won't like it and I'm afraid to say I'm not too sure on it either. Would really like a high rise GT spoiler.

Today I used a vacuum bleed kit to try and suck some air out the lines. As having trouble with a spongy pedal.  Pedal is firm when cold and once warm it does goes soft. Definitely shouldn't be brake fade with the xp8's and plus if I pump the pedal, it does go firm again.

Typically it starts to rain as soon as I take wheel off. Needed a shower anyway lol

so didn't really take any more pics because it was like trying to use your phone under water.
Also thought I would try tightening the brake lines, and got bit of a turn on them.
Still need to go out and test them. If it still persists then it may be master cylinder, but this looks like a new item and not the original from 1998.

what a fiddle little job that was! Not if you got tiny little girl hands , but big fat cock fingers its tricky.  Plus the last bastard that worked on the damn thing thought he would have a laugh and put all the jubilee clips on with the screws facing the back of the car. So with a few c words and patience tested I got it off.

Then the inner child came out and I thought about running the trumpets upside down sticking out the bonnet.

Never thought of that and don't have history of it being changed. Its possible.
Don't know how much a genuine one is but can get them for £170 so not too bad.

Anyway I got Fuchs titan race pro s 5w40 again. It was £53.95 for 6 litres from demonstweeks. Love a bargain

Strut braces. Should be an easy job! Well not for me!

First of all as you can see from picture above. The bolt was 6mm to long

Then this bracket and weld are in the way. Tapped the little ****e down with a big hammer.
Still needed the grinder though. Grinders and hammers solve everything

Well last few days I've been fitting the rear strutbrace :muttley:

I got a cheap £35 ebay rear brace but when I tried fitting it, it didn't quite fit. I had a look and it seemed two holes had been drilled in the wrong place. After emailing the seller a few times to come to a solution, I noticed I in fact bought a e46 rear brace :roflmao:

So with e36 rear braces starting at £90 and short time scale before the ring, I thought I would make it fit!

So the droplink bracket is made of chocolate!
I think that it may have came loose and the fact I have a 28mm H&R anti roll bar, it may have weakened the bracket

Carbotech xp8 rear pads

Easy to do. Undo rear caliper from carrier. Push piston in with thumbs and put in new pads.

So some of you may know that I've had issues with front brakes. If you don't know then read previous pages as can't be arsed to explain again.

Well one day the brakes got bad again! Then I noticed this.

That's brake fluid ladies and gentlemen

Looked like bleed nipple was loose.

Well it wasn't! It was in fact ****ed

I tried to stop the fluid leaking out with a bigger bolt. It didn't stop it 100% so I clamped the brake hose.

So now I'm actually worried as this was Monday last week and we was leaving for nurburgring Thursday night.
I quickly made a thread if anyone had a bbk for sale and I searched the net for some 840i calipers, but they are rare as a fat kid not liking cake!
So with so little time and no one coming forward with bbk I had no choice but to buy a new kit. Literally every site couldn't make the deadline apart from one! REYLAND! Spoke to Martin on Tuesday and said "I see you got the kit on ebay for next day delivery, can you get it to me tomorrow?" He said no! Lol he told me that they have everything in stock but he machines the bells and brackets to order. He would need to machine them, then get them anodised and then post.  He said Friday.  Told I need them by Thursday as going nurburgring Thursday night. He then told me that he didn't want to take the order only to let me down. I was gutted to say the least. I then explained I had bbk already and that the threads had stripped and I had no brakes. I had to give him 15 minutes and phone back. The next phone call I was delighted to hear that he has a e36 order already and he will stay late that night to make it happen and get them to me by Thursday.

He's a legend and anyone that wants a bbk should go to him.

So as I was cleaning the car Thursday this was delivered

So out came the grinder!

At this point it was getting late and I was rushing so didn't take many more pictures. I can tell you that the AP calipers are a lot lighter and smaller than the brembos. So you'll need a smaller spacer. I need 20mm to clear coilovers anyway with the 8.5" wheel up front.

So brakes were on and straight away I was impressed. Locking the wheels up at 100 was fun. :D so next up was nurburgring. The brakes were outstanding! The ds2500 are fine for the nurburgring, it's not heavy on brakes and I was doing 2 laps back to back. Brakes didn't fade at all.
I only managed to get a 8.34 on my 7th lap. (First time there) I had my buddy in the car telling me where to be on track and when to brake. We was going through heavy traffic as the track had just opened and had a yellow flag too so that cost me few seconds.
Would definitely be in the 8.20's otherwise. Want under 8 minutes next trip there.
Will upload some pictures tomorrow

The 3mm thick stainless washers my buddy made. Hopefully will stop the chocolate brackets from melting.

Poor car. Wrote this off and bought it back from insurance. I've bought an E30 to put engine, gearbox, suspension and brakes in.

Racing and went in a ditch at 90mph. Very lucky not to roll etc. But car bounced out and landed in some bushes. So chassis is twisted and not going back on road.
