Title: Project Slow - Audi A3 8P 2.0 TDI...
Post by: Dec on 21 October 2009, 08:08
Hey all.

Not a golf and not a Volkswagen, but its still VAG!

So I've had to sell the Golf (still awaiting pickup from a blooming ebayer ) as it was too much to insure/run for me and I fancied something newer. So I started a search for an Audi A3 TDI.

I was pretty shocked at the money they still get for fairly oldish one's. I really wanted a brand new white one, but the parents said I had to move out before spending over £8000 on a car... so that was the budget  (they wouldnt have noticed a bit extra but a new one with the spec I wanted was £23k)

Anyway, managed to pick up an 04 plate 2.0 TDI SE, basic crappy spec, but a nice and (sort of) econimical diesel. Makes such a difference over running the Golf! Plus, insurance is about £400 less and tax is £80 less  Got it from a small garage thats quite local to me, got 12 months AA warrenty on it (the five star with all the extras jobby), a

Some pics (may have seen them in my Golf's thread already as I havent taken any new ones!)

This will be a really really slow project (due to the parents saying I can't modify it. My mums jealous of it, and my dads just grumpy that I haven't moved out when I can afford to ) but plan is to stick coilovers and wheels on it whenever they next go on holiday. Only down side to that is, is that it may not be til June/July next year :(

Little bits will be done though. So far I have put my head unit in and removed the dealer sticker from the back window... really exciting!

Other short term plans are to change the crappy wood trim, uprate the speakers and remap it.

n.b. the pictures were on a really really ultimately steep hill.... (or not.)

Did you pay that outright?

Good choice though. TBF, some sneaky engine mods won't get your parents worrying.

Definitely the fuel of the future :lipsrsealed: Still miss driving the golf, and this feels 10x slower :(

Derv is the way forward :afro:

Looks good Dec, though it's a bit of a older person's car for someone of your age innit?  :undecided:

It is a bit of a mature car, but fits in a bit better at work  The Golf looked odd next to an Aston Martin and Porsche the other week  This just blends in with the other newer cars i.e golfs, honda's and bmw's.

Niice buy San! Newer cars are awesome, nice an reliable!

So is the golf gone now?

Reliable.. its in the garage today already for the CV Boot

Golf apparently sold on ebay, but you know what ebay buyers are like.. so it will probably be back up for sale again at the weekend.

Did you pay that outright?

Good choice though. TBF, some sneaky engine mods won't get your parents worrying.

Not quite, hence the needing to sell the Golf, and pay for the insurance in January too!

stick in there Dec and do all the work to it when they are away like you said, as soon as you move out mate you wont have any cash spare for cars!

nice mota guv! :afro:

I'm saving for a deposit at the moment, but hopefully I will be paid a bit better by the time I have enough saved for that!

I can't imagine you'll be leaving that standard too long... I've got an excuse as my Mrs won't let me and I'm also getting a track toy next year...

I hope it won't be standard for too long! lol

Definetely want wheels and decent coilovers at some point, but would rather get the inside tidied up a bit first :)

Ladies seem to love it just because its an Audi regardless of the wheels :lipsrsealed:

Gave it a proper clean today. Took me a few hours.. and five minutes ago (and five minutes after i finished!!) it started raining

Anyway.. crappy iPhone pics but better than nothing.

Take one of these:

Remove some of these:

and end up with this:

The wood trim still needs to go but...

My girlfriend has a brand new suzuki swift which just shuts it down

Do it bud, so nice compared to an old golf! This is a pretty cheap model, but its a diesel so cost a couple of thousand more than a petrol!

Having said that, I've done around 2000 miles in a couple of weeks, so no doubt the extra will be justified while its in my ownership :)

Not much of an update, and no pics, but today I removed the glove box and wired my ipod in. Much happier now that its hidden away and done neatly!

Got a little list going on now!

Change Interior Trim
Wire head unit to the fuse box ignition live, or buy a can bus adapter (no ignition live on newer cars, its all controlled by electrics)
Re-wire rear speakers (currently on a standard amp but going to the H/U on speaker wiring.. crappy design)
Wire in my sub

Longer term..

Alloys
Coilovers

Probably not that bad really, but its a hell of a lot smoother, and quieter, so even if it was exactly the same i think it would feel slower. Planning on getting it mapped soon as my mate got his done really cheaply by a mate and he said the improvements are awesome!

Also booking it in for cambelt, water pump and intrim service soon. Done over 3k miles in this now... and only had it a month

My focus is alot lot quicker then my mk4 was yet when your not putting your foot down at times it feels slower just because the smoothness of the derv power
Can cruise at 70 on motorway and it feels like 45-50 in the golf

I haven't done any cruising at 70 :lipsrsealed: but on the way to alton towers the other weekend, it sat happily and drove better than the golf did

I do approx 500 miles a week regularly, and I went to thruxton one weekend to watch my girlfriends cousin racing, that was approx 350 miles. Then went to Alton towers nearly 2 weeks ago which was another 480 miles!

Racking them up for sure :(

Still not done anything on the list.. however I do now have a coilover fund on the go for when the spring comes :lipsrsealed:

Other news.. I booked it in this morning for a Cambelt/Waterpump/oil change on the 4th December.

And also got a parking ticket yesterday (when I was standing next to the car)

Crappy wooden trim now changed for gloss black. Ideally want the brushed aluminium trim but this is so much better than the wood so will do for now!

Next on the list is likely sorting the rear speaker wiring, putting my sub in and wiring the head unit to an ignition live.

Its not bad, but in my petrol head opinion it is! Mines a 140, details here: http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/specs/Detail.aspx?deriv=25501

Photoshopped:

All that is doing, is removing the center chrome bit from the upper grill and extending the side chrome bits. Suppose its possible to do, and will look like the new shape front bumpers, but might look a bit pikie/ghetto in the flesh. Suppose that chrome trim tape is cheap enough to give it a go (and black vinyl that i have laying around could be worth the experiment on the center bit.

Also did this for giggles...

Looks good mate! I have thought about doing it, and seen another one on the Audi forum that has done it and it looks pretty good! Not sure how it would look on an otherwise standard car though :undecided: Pretty sure if I did it gloss or matt black with vinyl it would look ok but think I will wait til I get a drop and some wheels on it

If it's a Nikon, it's not a 450d. The 450D is a Canon model, think Horney has one.

If you want Nikon, the D3000 is the base model, if it's Canon you want, the base model is the 1000D.

The car does look good in those photos, it's amazing what a difference a half decent camera makes. Even an older secondhand DSLR can take better photos than a compact.

Anyway, cheer yourself up with the thoughts of what you will get for the car once insurance/tax are out of the way.

Ah right thanks mate, Just found out it is the Cannon 450d. I prefer Nikon personally, probably why I thought it was that when he just said the model number. Defiantly a good camera all the same!

I'll notice the insurance price though! And running costs haha. Maybe when I move closer to work I will, but I'm fed up of paying crazy insurance for now. Kinda regret getting the 2.0 even, maybe should have gone for the 1.9 lol Don't think I could live with just 5 gears though :undecided:

Do love this car, but still unhappy with the way it looks sometimes :undecided:

Thanks guys :) Need some reassurance haha.

Yer I hate insurance. Makes me laugh though as when I've been going on the likes of confused.com and stuff with old quotes from 2 years ago when I passed, theres quotes on 150 tdi mk4 golfs for around £3600! which is just plain ridiculous!

My insurance has been like this so far:

First year: Mk2 1.6 Golf (value @ £300) - £1800
Second Year: Mk2 1.6 Golf (value @ £300) - £800 (1 years NCB) (Canceled 1 month later)
Second Year: Mk3 16v GTI (value @ £1800) - £1600 (1 years NCB)
Third Year: Audi A3 2.0 TDI (value @ £8000) - £1025 (Cheapest quote, awaiting renewal)

So it is improving (as I've had more expensive/faster/newer cars than the previous year) but cannot wait till its even less! My mate who also has a 2.0 tdi A3, same year (04 plate) but is 21 with 2 years ncb is paying £560 a year! So I think its more age that is against me than the car/ncb that I have

What takes the piss is the GTI badge mate.

I pay atm £103 a month with HIC, on a 8v Mk3, all mods declared etc, full comp, 21 3 years driving 1ncb.

I can insure a 2000 plate Audi S3 Quattro Fully comp, with my gf as a named driver (not evening driving a year!!) for about a tenner more a month......

The S3 is twice as powerful!!! And worth 7 times the amount, with a named driver that is 18 and less than a year driving.

GTI = FAIL

No, i wont add her to it. Was just for laughs! lol.

Think you need some OEM styled BBS on this car, they look so right.

with regards to insurances, think ur self lucky, im 20, just renewed, 1 year ncb, 10 month policy, 3rd party, 1.9d n reg polo value of £150 and i pay 900ish, and my old mk4 gttdi pd115 when i was 18 no ncb they wanted £4500, so that was done on mums policy  last time i insured the mk2 8v gti i was 19 no ncb, declared the exhaust induction and alloys, 3rd party £1900. and the rado kr on the same policy was 2100. just cant wait till im 25 for gods sake, i mean, ive never had an accident, i bin driving 3 years, and i can only just insure a knakerd 15 year old derv polo wich had 64bhp once upon a time. its a joke, yet my missus, who has bin driving 3 and a half years, same age as me, stacked intot the back of things 3 times nw, yet she can insure a 4 grand 2 litre bug for 600 hundred bux. all cos she has tits, and she cant drive for sh!t

Jokes lol Found a couple of apartments about 20 mins away from home, but they're about halfway between where I am now and work, so I will be saving a lot on fuel which will help pay for it all hopefully.

If I don't get either of the two that I like the look of then im a bit stuck really, although the gf's step dad has been looking at buying a flat for me to rent from him

Sooo.... today I learnt quite a bit about the car tbh after having to take half the interior trim out! I went to a friends garage and had some help fitting my sub and wiring my head unit to an ignition live.

So the first task was to wire the power cable through the bulkhead.. which turned out to be a mission but was achieved in the end! We had to remove the wiper blades, to try and get the rain tray out, but it was held on too well and we couldn't find any clips or anything holding it on. So in the end we just pulled it out the way and were able to find a grommet that came out at the top of the dash, which meant removing the glove box. Then we ran the cable down through the car under all of the side trim, up into the boot where the sub sits. Then found an convenient hole to poke the cable through to the battery from under the scuttle panel, which meant removing it again! Once that was all back through again, we ran the remote line down as well.

Then we removed the other side, and wired the RCA cables down there. While we were at it we ran a cable from the head unit to the fuse box so that I could avoid spending £50 on a CAN-bus adapter just so it comes on and off with the ignition!

Then we had to remove all of the boot trim, which took a while to figure out how it came out due to there being no screw holes etc.. It wasn't too bad in the end, and a little bit of pulling force unclipped it. Overall it wasn't too hard, and I now have my sub installed with no cables showing what so ever! Not even in the engine bay which I am pretty happy with!

Only took one picture, and it came out badly to say the least!

Also had a tinker about with a 200sx fitting a new gasket on the manifold and turbo

Next up (tomorrow hopefully) - I'm going to attempt to re-wire the rear speakers directly to the head unit so they aren't running off the (somewhat underpowered) Audi amp thats in the boot! This will hopefully make them equally as loud as the front speakers (currently on -8 fading to the rear!!) and stop the horrible crackling noise thats coming from them at the moment (common problem when using a wiring loom that doesn't use RCA cables to connect the Audi amp to the head unit).

Going to need a lot of luck I think as I'm on my own tomorrow!

I didn't get round it in the end mate. Did have a look but couldnt find out how the rear door cards came off, so decided to give it the first wash of 2010, then the plan was to have another go after dinner but couldnt.

New front tyres fitted yesterday as I had to take an emergency day off work anyway. They were so bad that the canvas was starting to come through on parts..

I hate cars. Period.

Basically I was going to buy coilovers this month, then the car (its the cars fault not mine ) decided that it would like some tax, a service, brakes all round and to develop some sort of a problem that I don't know what it is.

So the car still lives. Just in need of some TLC (tax is done, rest needs sorting still). I have kept it well polished though but still its hating me lol

Maybe its because I never use tyre shine on it! But did give it a nice polish in the sun over the weekend  Crappy cars that need maintainence  could have had it on a set of rims and coilovers 3 times over by now

Hmm not such a good idea really  Not sure how long it would last doing not far off 2000 miles per month lol plus I want to be able to put this car back before I sell it, so if i do change anything it will at most be the wheels and coilovers, keeping the originals so that I can sell it standard :)

Think the mk1 s3's are 5x100 Kells so don't think they would fit really.

Not bothered on OEM or aftermarket, like most of the new Audi rims, been looking at reps mostly due to costing :/

Fronts are about halfway down, and the rears have 1 - 1.5cm left to go. I need this car to drive nicely and last with the miles I do, so dont want stupid low, went for driveability/comfort mostly. Got rid of the majority of the arch gap even though it still looks quite a lot in the pics. Overall I'm happy :)

Didn't do the brakes though as I was given the wrong pads from the shop  so that will be happening on tuesday I think.

My dad uses it on his bikes. Its in a spray can so will likely just spray it on the whole thread/rings/lower spring section.

He said that in the past he's degreased it, pressure washed it, and they have been like new underneath :)

Oh and picked up this bargain from ebay on thursday, single grill facelift front bumper. Not the S line one like i wanted, but this was £100 less than the ones ive been looking at on the bay!

Needs spraying and has a little dink in the lower splitter bit but that will get sorted once I source a bonnet and grill from a late 05 - early 08 A3 and get them sprayed up :)

What a mission!

Just had to fix my lights (had a headlight, brake light, and the reverse light blown)..

Reverse light has never worked and is corroded, so I managed to get it working by spending longer on scraping the corrosion off this time, and managed to fix that for the first time in 9 months! But in turn that messed up the indicator.. also corroded.. dammit! So cleaned up that and got those working.

The brake light was the other side so changed that over, sorted, slight signs of corrosion on the fog light and indicator though  Thought newer cars were meant to be better!

Headlight.. ok, no room to work, cant even see the bulb to know how it fits in.. look in the manual.. take it to the dealer?! Erm no.

Stupid little metal clip thing later and its out and new one back in..

I cannot believe it actually took an hour to change a few bulbs around.. took me about 5 mins on my mk3!

Corrosion for lights on a car of that age sounds bad....  Yeah what is it with headlights needing dealers its a joke!...  I have the same with my daily, cant change anything on the O/S unit... its a pain because if a bulb goes you have to book it in and if you get pulled by the fuzz in the mean time you cant do anything about it!  it takes an age to change it if at all possible.  bulbs should always be the easiest thing to do!  Car still looks great by the way..

Yeah I dread to think what a mission it would be to get to the O/S ! I think it is possible on this by removing all the air filter piping and box though, but still sounds like an effort for a bulb!

Thanks dude, hopefully will look better soon if I do decide to get wheels, I'm trying to justify it to myself at the moment that it is something I want to do. Loads of other stuff I could do with really (new TV to replace the crappy CRT type I have) so just dont really know. Know the ones I will get if I do go for rims though. I bet I'll leave it to the last minute (as I do everything) and then just do it anyway. Need 4 tyres for the MOT by the 10th October, so watch this space

Car had it's 3rd service in 11 months yesterday  along with a pre-MOT check and general look over to check nothings on its way out (reason I hadn't already got wheels as everything is so expensive for Audi's!) sooo anytime now really, just need to make up my mind whether I just get tyres for the 16's or get new wheels totally.

Picked these up today, Genuine RS6 alloys from an RS6 I believe, so theyre 8.5x18 all round, offset 38. (Ones that came on A3's are 7.5" and a higher offset I think). Which means they will add 2" to the width of the wheels, and a few mm by the offset. Still praying that the fronts are going to fit as I have no idea how offset and width work, or whats best for the A3! (been told et42 is a safe bet, so I think I'm pushing it..)

They were cheap, but could do with a refurb as all of them are scuffed but I needed 4 tyres for the MOT, and can't justify spending a lot for a couple of months, so they will do for the winter and give me something to do.. try and refurb myself :undecided:

Wrapping them in 215/35/18's which will give a bit of stretch I think which are being delivered tomorrow then fitting at the weekend hopefully!

Yeah I didn't really think about it before I brought them  Impulse buying fail I think, but they will fit so as long as I can get it through the MOT, then I can always change them if they are bad, not that I really want to be spending out on tyres lol

Maybe a little too much, guess I'll just have to go low enough so there isnt a silly arch gap.. at least the fronts should fit

Post by: Rhyso on 23 September 2010, 07:53
They'll be a big improvement :afro:

You may have to do the arch mod for the fronts; think it involves removing one of the screws that holds the arch liner in place as that can rub the tyre

 Nah I will only be doing them silver again, only going to be a stop-gap over winter hopefully then will get something else in 6 months or so. :undecided:

Think they will look too small with the tyres i've gone for though, need to find out what the normal tyres size for an A3 on 18's is really to see!

Should be on at the weekend assuming I can get the tyres fitted at the weekend, then time for MOT and then i'll worry about attempting the refurb

Yeah did think about going for a graphite type colour like the RS4's that come with black editions.. but not sure if it would make it too stealthy, and im a fan of bright rims rather than dull, blendy in type lol

Will see how the patching up goes with the curbing first off, then decide once thats done

And yes, i'm like the harry potter of it though, its at the point where it starts to hurt when I even just think of things such as silly colour wheels

I'm pretty used to cheap crappy tyres :embarassed:

On my mk2, could only afford the budget stuff so put kuhumo or something like that on that when needed

Then my mk3 I did ok with, it came on Dunlop's with the merc wheels, then when I put new tyres on the Keskins I put pirelli's on there, they were amazing! but pricey lol

Now with the audi, the rears havent needed changing til recently, and one was more worn than another so put a part worn on to match it so they would both be new at the same time. When the fronts needed doing back in january  I had a vision that I would only put cheap tyres (the 'Event' crappers) because I wanted new wheels shortly after... sooo 9 months down the line and here we are  Only just doing anything about it!

Hopefully these tyres will be ok, need to find a nice garage to fit them, and a nice MOT tester to pass them :undecided:

Thanks guys :) Do like them! Its the rear tyres that don't look right IMO.. They are 215/35/18's. Several friends run them on their cars and had no problems so don't think I need to be worried. There is a hell of a lot of road noise and feel ever little bump though

Think they will look a lot better if I just drop it a bit more, however i'm heading north for a course this week coming and there is a massive (I mean the biggest I have ever seen) speed bump on the way into the on site carpark.. so going to have to wait til next weekend to do anything about it unfortunately

Heres another pic's I took before the other one, however didn't upload it as the sun is a bit glaring..

Next things I want to do are slight rear tints, MY11 rears lights, S Line spoiler, and then concentrate on getting the newer shape front end sorted, although that will take a while.

Its level at the moment (hard to see in the pics i've got) so will need to do the front a bit too. Plenty of room to go though, and the sump sits an inch or more higher than the plastic undertray, so nothing to worry about there :)

Roll on next weekend  Will get some more pics tomorrow though

Plus the cars I would want as a replacement are silly!

09+ A3 Ibis White Black edition 2.0tdi (slightly pointless really just love the new shape and the updated parts and the higher spec)
08+ 320d BMW Coupe M Sport (silly money for a low mileage, decent spec one)

BOOO!! So this is the main reason why I want to update the front end to the newer shape..

Basically I drive silly miles a day, on A roads, where lorries love to block both lanes and overlap into the central bit near the barrier all the time.. So I have silly amounts of stone chips! This is the state after a year of owning the car...

And then some cock a few months ago cut a carpark corner a bit too sharply and caught my front bumper

So anyway, I am still on the lookout for a new bonnet to go with the bumper in my shed. As the bumper I have isn't an S line one (but was picked up for less than 1/5th of the price of an S line one, so I can't really complain), I will be looking out for an S Line one in the meantime. I will then get the new bonnet and bumper sprayed up, and then get my mate to put a layer of protectant vinyl over the top to hopefully keep the stone chips at bay a little! Hope to get this done over the winter though along with a few more bits:

LCR Splitter
Drop some more
Wheel Refurb
MY09 or MY11 rear lights
New shape S Line rear bumper
Rear tints
S Line Spoiler

In no particular order, and half of them will probably never be done knowing me

New shape S Line rear bumper - £140 + £60 spraying
Rear tints - £75

Nah seriously, I want this car to last a few more years (but how many it will manage at 30k a year I don't know) so that when I move out and closer to work, I can have this as a runaround then get something new to keep nice. I can dream eh?

Gave it a nice coat of wax in prep for winter, will be doing a few more coats over the next few weeks as and when I get the time :)

Be handy if I had a garage that I could keep it in and just do loads spread over 2/3 days where it won't get dirty and need washing again over night

If I had got to bed a bit earlier tonight then I had planned on lowering the coilovers some more, however I will likely spend the majority of the day sleeping now

Sooo, lowered the front some more, only about 2cm I think, maybe a bit more. Still about 8-10mm left to go however it was scraping the bumper on the floor on a bumpy road as it was :( I ran out of degreaser before I did the rear though, so will have to do that in the week  Drives a hell of a lot nicer now for some reason

Nice fresh waxoyl:

Ah yeah can't even see it! I sprayed more on this time, but after a while the excess foam disolves or evaporates or something and then it just leaves a greasy layer :) So probably the same thing! I was so impressed with the way they cleaned up so easily today that I would swear by waxoyl, hopefully it will last over winter

Car kinda has a nice stance from the rear at the moment, was walking up to it from a distance earlier and it looked ok, but can't help but think that it does need to go down more. Will see what happens. My old mk3's coilovers were seized solid, so was a bit sceptical about adjusting these incase I messed something up, never done anything to a car completely on my own before, but it was pretty easy, and all went to plan so will deffo not hesitate in future! Should have lowered the whole thing more ages ago

Yeah if you look under the car the wishbone mounts are pretty much the lowest point other then the sump/exhaust which would vary on models I'd assume.

Im driving down to Brighton this afternoon so it will get filthy, ill flip a coin over washing her tomorrow lol

LMs, so far so good. Not had any problems with them. They aren't diamond cut polished lacquered (I think that's the word?) like the Monza 2 so shouldnt suffer too bad as long as you keep them reasonably clean.

I prefer your new ones mate! Haha, yeah I expect mine will be dirty as soon as I move it :( Sucks this time of year!

Erm got a few things I want to get/do.

Paying off my credit card over the next few months, so nothing will be happening then, but around june/july time I want to source an S line front bumper and the newer shape bonnet so that I can get those on in August when I get a private plate for my bday (bit gay, but will look like a newer model then, say what you like.. lol)

So that would sort the front end really, then I would like a new rear bumper, as my one is fooked! Along with new rear lights and some light rear tints.

Very expensive list really, so won't be happening anytime soon, but I'd like to think I can do it over the next year  maybe.. lol I'm bored of it now though, so recon I will get an uprated clutch of some sort put in and a remap, but I have no idea what order any of this will get done in! Theres so much I want to do, but its all pretty expensive and for a car that now has almost 105k on the clock, it seems pretty pointless... haha

Aha get it washed tomorrow mate! Meant to get cold again next week so you know damn well it wont get done then :P

Ah sweet, im rubbish with keeping wheels clean! Wouldn't mind changing wheels next year, but will see how long it takes me to do the above list of things first

Yeah they have been (poorly) refurbed in the past before :)

Where they were done, the paint is chipping off in places to reveal the lighter silver underneath. Really need to pull my finger out and refurb them but I'm holding off til spring time when its warmer! All of them are curbed from a previous owner of the car they came from and look a state up close, but they will do for now. I think they're reps anyway as the have a slight concave on the face and are 8.5" wide et38, whereas I think the standard ones are 7" and a higher offset  Not too sure.. but they came off an A4 so the fronts poke slightyl  Could do with 3 or 5 mm spacers on the back to level it out really, adding to the list

Haha the undertray stops sooo much crap getting into the engine though! Ideally I would like to get a metal one made up, but don't know if my mate can. Audi do a metal sump guard at a price around £400

Same i hope, for the wagon :) get it all nice and pretty again, it's in a right state at the moment, just like all the little things sorting like clips all in correctly and stuff!

Yeah be sweet man! Vinyl wrap will be good for when you come to selling it and someone just wants a standard car instead of everything sprayed black :)

True, my engine bay was covered in snow from where my subframe had just dragged it all up was a pain in the ar$e to change gear because it had blocked my gear linkage :D

Green, yellow, etc are all the same coolness and are lairy, etc, etc. The blue would be best for you and your car me thinks. I think a metallic cool blue (maybe a slight grey to it).

Yeah that sounds pretty cool, just to find the right paint!

Won't be doing anything til the warmer weather though, I will probs get a crappy finish regardless but at least if its a decent temp I would have more chance of getting it looking ok

Haha peer pressure dude, in Alex's thread I said how I wouldn't be able to pull them off!

May give it a go, but I know that I would get ripped for it!

Actually, having said that, in Alex's thread Dan asked about vinyl wheels so I could vinyl them baby blue :lipsrsealed: At least that could be rectified quicker and easier than paint

Ah cheers dude, I quite like the next one on from that - Freedom Blue. Might have to get some scrap metal and experiment first, or just bite the bullet and risk it being a bit chav :undecided: Few black A3's round here that look a bit sh!t, tints and cheap black centre, polished lip wheels.. I don't want to be in that crowd :undecided:

I'll probably Remove it, its a pain in the ass to clean properly

Its only stuck on anyway, so luckily don't need to mess around with filling anything!

Next plan is to remove the rear wiper and put a glass bung in the hole, and possibly lower the rear a bit more :undecided:

Then refurb the wheels, or buy some new ones. Long way off yet though, its due a service now, so will get that done next month, then tax in march, so whilst paying stuff off only little bits will be done

Can't be doing silly mileage on a nicer car, hate the fact i'm doing it to this. The front end is stone chipped to hell

It will be well and truly run into the ground before I get rid of it  Doing 500ish miles per week, so its not in very good condition lol Needs a lot of patching up and a front end respray, wheels need refurbing etc...

Runs sweet though, as long as the engines good then it does what I need it to do :) And I can still get the paint shining, so still looks good (from a couple of meters away )

Thanks dude :)

Nothing new really, clicked over 114k last week! Plan is to just drop it a bit more in the next few months, possible 5mm rear spacers and refub the wheels one weekend, and also wet vac the interior! Last weekend I lowered the back a bit more, serviced it again, and its clicked over 121k the other day. Still going strong!

Was meant to go into the bodyshop on Monday for the front end to be re-sprayed and the rear bumper but my mate was behind with a couple of other cars due to a customer changing his due date (and as I was getting slightly reduced rates I couldn't really pester him!) Plus, having just moved out its been useful having the car to cart stuff about :)

Also my mate took the rear badge off which I've seen look good on a few S3's, but on mine it doesn't look right, and I dont think losing the rear wiper would help much either. So going to take the wiper off anyway but likely get a black rear badge so there is still a badge there, but still match the de-chromed front end :)

Thanks for the comments guys! Anything else after getting the bits sprayed will be small and cheap mods!

Haha mine needs to be able to take 4/5 people and get over speed bumps occasionally, so don't think I'll go any lower just yet! Need to get camber adjustment on the rear too as that's a pita at the mo!

Got about 10mm left on the front but all the way down on the back, if I lower it more on the front then I'd take the adjuster cup out of the rear and put the original rubber cup back in. The sill sits level at the mo so it would need all round lowering to pull it off :)

Tyres are crazy low profile, majorly bumpy and on full lock it looks like there isn't any tyre on the rim!! Would like to get a set of 19's for it but if I do then it wont be for about a year or so, got some big bills coming up with the cambelt needing doing again in 6-8 months :(

Im with you on the above as there are a load of bits and bobs that i want to buy but im not going to as i want to change the cambelt in 6-8 months.. i need to change another CV joint and loads of tarting up before big mods  if you decide to sell the Sline wheels let me know

Yeah better to prepare for that sort of thing :) I had the cambelt done just over a year and a half ago when I first got it, and already done 50k :( Sooo will need doing again soon lol Yeah I'll give you a shout mate, the guy I got them from wants first dibs on them though. They were off his A4 so are wider and concave a bit compared to the stock ones from A3's :)

Heres a shot of the rear, with the wiper but with no badge... Not feeling it really :undecided:

Yeah not keen at all really. Think its a combo of the wiper and the rear bumper not being the same shape as some of the other ones that i've seen. Deffo going to de-wiper and get another badge for it, totally skin this month though :lipsrsealed: been buying house crap lol

Hmm not too keen on red, I'm keeping this pretty subtle really and don't want anything to stand out too much and especially not look tacky, which red, if done wrong, could :undecided:

I was thinking of putting a black badge on just so it shows up in the reflections and certain angles and stuff, but then I thought about maybe doing the front and rear a graphite colour to match the wheels, but still less sharp/bright than the chrome :undecided:

Badge in silver rather than chrome? Less blingy but still looks original. Graphite sounds good too

Red on black is going to be my theme so hands off!...  I jest but Dec you have a point, Red on black always goes well but can easily look OTT on a modern car.

Thanks chaps

If the camber worries me enough then i'll get camber adjustment bolts  It's not that bad, the last tyres lasted me 20k on the front, and the rears should last me another 5-10k. The fronts after 20k were not a pretty sight, and I hope I never leave it so late to buy tyres again...

That's the problem with camber related wear, it's not so obvious...  I have been caught out once.

Sooo... Brought some black polish last weekend to see if it would mask some of the imperfections... I was really impressed, its basically the equivelant of colour magic but the shop I went to didnt have any of the 'real' stuff.

So it looks 10x shinier, doesn't show stone chips from about 10 miles away (you have to be within a metre or so's range to see any sign of them) and overall I'm very happy :) The front end and rear bumper will be getting sprayed at some point, its just finding time off work to book it in!

Also cleaned my mates Scooby while we were at it... (me being a knob behind it... was a combo of trying to push it along like a shopping trolly, and just get in the way of the photo lol).. JDM import STi though, so its not slow  Couldn't deal with 18-22mpg though

Soooo, not a lot has happened in the Months that I haven't posted an update...

Its now nearing 130k, pretty chuffed with that, just hope it lasts a lot longer too :)

Also, this happened.

Speechless to be honest, I think it was just a random passer by when I was at the GF's parents last night, but could well have happened on my own driveway

Well down to the metal, right the way from the little bit on the door that can be seen in the pic, then they went to the trouble of moving up slightly to do the whole of the rear quarter up to the rear light. THANKS!

Well supposedly they're galvanized, so shouldn't rust lol but I know they do... Going to get a touch up pen today and try and hide it as best as possible (my mates pretty handy with them, and once mopped it should only be visible at certain angles) then get it properly sprayed after winter. My mate should be able to blow it in pretty well hopefully, but black is a b!tch :(
