Title: Proper Clean After Unwashed Collection.
Post by: Talk-torque on 05 April 2016, 21:58
Have to admit, I was a little apprehensive about doing a good enough job, after collecting my new GTi "in the wraps". The removal of sheeting and stickers went OK, but today it was time to get down to the job of preparing the paint and getting some protection on. I had asked for the car to be unwashed as I was concerned about the casual splosh and rub it would get at the dealer leaving the often seen scratches and swirls, but could I do better, plus get some proper protection onto the paint without doing any damage? I was as prepared as I could be, having read Rebecca's "First Detail of The R" (Thanks Rebecca!), and had obtained all the necessary bits and bobs, so off I went. I won't call it a detail, just a proper clean, seal and wax, but I am pleased with the result, which I think looks pretty good and should make my car easier to keep clean. I only found a few very minor paint blemishes, by the way, none of which warrant further action.

Yes, there's a bit of bronze in Tungsten Silver that the setting sun emphasised. It's a really nice colour IMHO, which shows off the Mark 7's curves and edges very well.

"Just a proper clean seal and wax"........ also known as 'a detail' lol.  You are too modest Talk-torque.

Well anyway, if that just a proper clean etc, it's a damn good one.  Fantastic work! Stunning.

What a beautiful colour - the silvers are the best colours for accentuating the razor sharp lines/creases of the mk7 to greatest effect.

You've given your new GTI a superb start in life. Great work. :afro: Love it!

Thanks all. I used Poorboys EX-P sealant and Do Do Juice Diamond White wax. Still amazed that I have a sealed and waxed car with no swirls! I keep going to the garage and turning the lights on to check! Doh!

Rebecca, you are too generous. Anyway, whatever we call what I have done, I would not have attempted it without your excellent guide. Thanks again.

I am really chuffed with Tungsten Silver, as it was, to some extent, my "least worst" choice! Lovin' it now!

Tungsten Silver was recommended by the salesman for my GTD.But i had already decided on Carbon Grey.
Looking at your fine pics,it seems he wasn't far wrong!.

That looks brilliant Talk-torque. Well done on your first attempt!

Now you need to make certain the dealer doesn't do their usual 'courtesy wash' and undo all your hard work when your car goes in for servicing or warranty work.

I always;
- tell them not to wash it
- get them to write it on their worksheet and the tag they tie on your keys
- hang this on the interior rear view mirror; http://carboncollective.com/product/do-not-wash-pvc-hook/

It's worked so far, although the dealer I use knows I'm OCD about my car!

Or save yourself £3.95 and just get a massive piece of cardboard, a thick marker pen and write your own. Ensure the cardboard sign is so big it fills the entire dash, ensuring even the most unobservant technician can't miss it.  That plus a luggage label sign on keys, instruction written on worksheet and highlighted with highlighter pen (bring your own if necessary, lol) and verbal instruction to the point where they live in fear of you. That does the trick.

That would work as well

BTW Booth were you on the Stratford Upon Avon to Solihull road yesterday at around 5:25pm? I was heading back to Solihull. Black R, female driver with light-ish coloured hair heading towards Stratford.

Not me, I'm currently NOT sunning myself on the windswept and freezing cold island of Fuerteventura (never again!).

And, no kalimon, you cheeky b*st@rd, I do not have grey hair (yet), it's still blonde(ish) if currently a little unkempt due to the aforementioned Canarian gales!!!

I want to come home and rescue my R from it's Gatwick car park prison.

I opted for Carbon Steel Grey over Silver as I just associate Silver with private hire mini-cabs now (though granted they're usually an Avensis or Octavia rather than a hothatch...) but the Tungsten Silver looks stunning. Really smart.

If you go to the Canaries, it has to be Tenerife. I go most years and it doesn't suffer from the sh!tty high winds some of the other islands do.
Grey's the new blonde or so my wife keeps telling me Rebecca ( she's nearly as old as me though)

That Tungsten Silver looks very good I must say.  I've ordered Reflex Silver so I hope I won't be casting envious looks at Tungsten Silver Golfs.

Been to Tenerife - hated it.  Been to Gran Canaria - not impressed.  Been to Lanzarote - quite liked it.  Now Fuerteventura - hate it.  Canaries - never again, it's had its chances.  Call me a snob but will stick to our usual long haul destinations - Indian Ocean - Maldives, Mauritius etc, and Caribbean, plus further afield. Anyway not our main holiday, going to St Lucia in July/Aug - beautiful island.  Will wash away the memory of this woeful trip.

I'm sure the new trendy grey will soon be upon me.  Actually white probably, natural blondes tend to go white rather than grey, and I'm starting to notice a few of the pesky little white devils now.  Can't hold back time.  I'll be the incredible detailing granny.......how sad is that.

Finally our Deep Pearl Black 5 Door GTI arrived at lunchtime today.

After asking the dealer just to remove the wraps and stickers and leave it untouched and then a 240 mile drive up the M6/M74 today in the pouring rain the car arrived totally bogging!

At 7pm the rain stopped and the sun came out so out i went to clean the wheels with Bilt Hamber Auto Wheel and give it a quick wash.

Wheels came up great with lots of bleeding and the car now looks nice and clean but jeez the paintwork is totally covered in fallout/iron deposits which really surprised me as the car was only built 2 weeks ago. The roof, bonnet and tailgate are all fine as they were protected with covers.

Anyway iron x lemon scent arriving tomorrow so that will deal with the fallout/iron in due course.

So i am thinking i am glad i took it away unwashed as i bet the dealers don't use anything like iron x when they prep the car but instead just polish the fallout/iron into the paintwork hence the damage they cause to the paintwork.

Will let you know how the iron x performs in due course but so far i am glad i took it away unwashed.

And as for the car itself it is totally totally totally totally amazing.

Congratulations on your new GTI.  Very wise decision not to have the dealer prep your car, especially as it's a DBP.

Don't get excited about the lemon scented Iron X actually smelling of lemons rather rotten eggs.....it doesn't, there's no masking that sulphurous smell, lol. But it's every bit as good as the non citrussy version for removing fallout and iron deposits. Just remember to throw away any cloth you use with it.  Do not put it in your washing machine, your other half may never speak to you again if you do.

When you've finished it's beauty treatment post up some pics of you get the chance.

I haven't been back in years but from what I have heard from other that have it is very commercialised now compared to back then.

Visited several years ago, and was not too commercialised at that point but will see how/if that has changed this summer.  Hopefully not been ruined!

Same happened to Cuba which was relatively unspoilt about 20 years ago, albeit extremely poor due to US embargo. Different story now, parts are very commercialised.  And they don't half flog the Ernest Hemingway connection to death, lol.

Maldives remains in top spot in my holiday list.  Next trip there in a year or two will be our 8th, and not the last.  Once daughter is a little older will be looking at Malaysia/Indonesia/Vietnam as a future trip.

Talk-torque, you've done a top job on detailing your car, I'll be very happy with mine if it's like that when I go to collect my GTD(Saturday hopefully) and I'm paying for a detailer to prep my car at the dealers. After seeing the excellent guide which was done by Booth11 I'm kind of gutted I haven't had the guts to detail the car myself but I'd not have trusted myself to do it to the standard which a lot of you seem to have managed.

Booth11, we were in Fuerteventura last September, it wasn't too windy for us but we noticed it was a lot windier at the Corralejo end of the island when we travelled around for a couple of days. We were out on a boat and seen some Hump Back Whales breaching which was an amazing sight, that made the holiday for me, I'd swam with dolphins the year before in the Caribbean and seeing the whales matched that.

Hope you manage to enjoy the rest of your holiday

Managed to get the iron x lemon scent on after dinner tonight and it worked really well. And not too smelly.

Covered the entire car with the 500ml bottle and left it for 10 minutes then gave it a wash with hot soapy turtle wax car shampoo. And then gave it a good long rinse.

Paintwork is so much smoother now.

It was hard to see the iron x working on a black car but the driveway was very red. I would recommend it.

Neighbours think i am a twit washing it twice in two days but i know i like many others am quite normal.

Will probably clay it tomorrow and give it another wash.

It's not even mine (it's the wifes)

Would love to see pictures of your detailed dbp gti!  I just picked up the same about 3 weeks ago and love it. And intend to do a Rebecca detail this weekend :)

I have a question though and maybe others can answer. I have purchased detailing products and intend to do a wash clay and seal this weekend but I have not bought any iron x or tar remover. Will I be doing irreversible damage to my car without doing iron x and tar remover before I start claying and sealing?  Shud i wait till I can get these two products first?

Thanks all!

Yes kev it's quite normal. I washed my GTD about 4 or 5 times in the first couple of weeks! It is in dire need of a good clean now though as it's only had a 'quick' snow foam wash for the past 3 or 4 weeks as I haven't had the time for more. Hoping to do it when I get home from work at 6.30 tonight weather permitting, and it will be going dark by the time I've finished!

You're not too far from me so will keep any eye out for a nice looking DPB GTI if I go to EK!

The short answer is, yes, you should wait till you have those products.

My advice, before going as far as claying, would be to give the whole car a going over with some tar/glue remover (Tardis) and iron/fallout remover (Iron X). That may well be sufficient to remove the embedded contaminants, and claying might not actually be necessary.

I wouldn't clay a car without first using an iron remover and a tar remover.  Far better IMO, to use these 'less touch' solutions to remove as much of the embedded contaminants before you move onto claying, which, even with a careful technique is prone to marring the paint, and is the reason claying is best followed up by a polish with a DA or by hand to remove any marks left by the clay.  With both tar remover and iron remover you simply spray it on, leave for 5 mins and then very gently wipe over with a soft microfibre, and rinse off with a pressure washer, so there is only small risk of marring the paint, and it will bring off much of the contaminants leaving the minimum (if any) to be removed with the clay. Going straight in with claying is a risky business as there is potentially a lot of stuff on the surface to be rubbed into the paint if you are not careful.  With clay bar/mitt/cloth, although used well lubricated, you are still dragging it back and forth over the entire surface of the paint.  That undoubtedly increases the risk of marking the paint.  Nothing that a polish won't easily sort of course, but much better to let the tar and iron remover get rid of the majority first.

If you do the de-iron and de-tar stages, you can check to see how clear the paintwork is by doing the sandwich bag test - get a plastic sandwich bag and slip it over your hand, then simply run your palm over areas of the paintwork, and it will emphasise anything embedded into the paintwork. The glassier the paintwork feels, the better, and the least contiminants are remaining. You can do this prior to decontamination too, to see how much contaminant is on the paintwork, then do it after decontamination to feel the difference. If done following the Tar and Iron phases you will be able to tell if claying is really needed.

Of course after decontamination you will need to reapply your chosen protection as decon strips everything off.

I didn't clay my car when I did its first detail.
In truth I used tardis on the entire car and then attempted to clay it using a combination of born slippy and dodo juice fine clay. It was a fecking disaster!
All I seemed to do was smear clay over the paintwork which I then had to remove with more tardis. Did I mention I am a novice when it comes to detailing?
I ended up using Meguiars scratch X on the entire car and then finishing off with gteckniq C2.
I hope all this isn't making you feel queasy Rebecca.
Anyway it turned out fine and I've had a bit of an education to boot.

My point exactly.  Meguiars Scrtach X is a polishing cutting compound, so you polished your car after the claying, which is the better approach, IF claying at all.  That will have removed any clay marring.   If you didn't get on with the DJ clay, and it is a learning curve, I would highly recommend ditching a traditional clay bar in favour of a more user friendly clay mitt.  You won't go far wrong with the WoWo Clay Mitt

I always;

Hmmm I have to go further than that - I stick A4 sized notices on the inside of the windows on both sides of the car - its the only way to ensure its not washed when left at the dealers.
