I've started the job of replacing a full set of slightly leaky seals on my engine and gearbox. The wheel bearing housings are off to have seized screws drilled out and the splash plates replaced so I removed the drive shafts.
I noticed both inner joints were very stiff, the O/S was difficult to move when using the length of the shaft as a lever. N/S joint has black grease in it, O/S joint has what looks like black wax in it. Started stripping down the easier N/S joint and noticed water has been in there at some time.
First question, my Haynes manual suggests there should be a gasket between the drive flange and CV joint. There are no gaskets on my car and as far as I know there never has been. Should the CV joint to drive flange be sealed with a gasket on a 1989 8v GTi?
Thank you.
