Title: Inner CV joint overhaul
Post by: Pwardy on 14 February 2018, 03:53
I've started the job of replacing a full set of slightly leaky seals on my engine and gearbox.  The wheel bearing housings are off to have seized screws drilled out and the splash plates replaced so I removed the drive shafts.

I noticed both inner joints were very stiff, the O/S was difficult to move when using the length of the shaft as a lever.  N/S joint has black grease in it, O/S joint has what looks like black wax in it. Started stripping down the easier N/S joint and noticed water has been in there at some time.

First question, my Haynes manual suggests there should be a gasket between the drive flange and CV joint.  There are no gaskets on my car and as far as I know there never has been.  Should the CV joint to drive flange be sealed with a gasket on a 1989 8v GTi?

Thank you.

There is a gasket, couldn't see it until started cleaning up.

Would the part number be 8D0407309 ?

Only way to shift the O/S joint. Supported on inner joint only:

What a mess:

Anybody got that gasket part number?

This job has become a full drive shaft overhaul.  Just removed the boot clips from the outer CV joints.

The clips are 9mm deep.  Anybody know where to get these from?  The stainless ones on eBay are typically 7mm deep and far too wimpy for the job.

Pulled the outer joints today:

The difference in the grease can be seen compared to the inner joint posted above.  Anybody know what this sloppy grease is?

Outer CVs tend to be replaced more often so I suspect the difference in the grease is simply the age/amount of crap in it.

So you're actually going to clean them up, regrease and put back together with new boots? Interesting, I've always just bought new ones for 15quid and stuck them on.

Keep the pics coming, interesting to see

In your experience then the grease is the same inboard and outboard?

Yes the plan is to rebuild the joints with grease and new clips, even keeping the original boots.  They are all original and its the first time they have been stripped down (owned and maintained the car from new).  So if the grease should be the same then some crap has got into the inboard joints.

Yes I'll keep posting pictures. This job has now turned into a driveshaft overhaul.

Bump, substantial boot clips anybody?  Aftermarket far too wimpy.

Yeah I've never noticed any difference in grease for inner or outer.

Can you get the boot clips from VW? Presume clips will be the same across other/newer models

Useful to know thank you.

Unless somebody says I got some nice substantial stainless clips from........  Then VW is where I'm heading.

Thank you, the job has been on hold for months while work constantly on my daily motor.

Back on the case soon with plating and reassembly of the inner joints.  Will post finished job.
