Title: waxing /polishing advice HELP
Post by: golfmk31993 on 27 April 2008, 14:46
hi,

ive had my tornado red mk3 golf for a while now and ive never polished it, its covered in swirl marks so im gunna give polishing a go with some super resin polish,

i just wondered if this is the right way to go about polishing,

1. wash car with fairy washing up liquid to remove all wax,

2. polish by hand with super resin polish untill it looks shiny and swirl free,

3.wax the car to seal the polish (i normally use the jet wash at my local BP as its 1 pound for 6 min high gloss wax)

stand back and admire the shine

is that the correct way to polish and wax?

and wot sort of cloth should i use to apply the polish? and should i dry the car before i polish?

thanks

For wax - don't use a BP garage, to get a good wax finish it takes a fair while to work it in. I use Collinite 476s - not the shiniest, but excellent water beading and durability.

ps. you can rinse your mouth out with fairy liquid for saying that you'll wash your car with it!

... :embarassed: I use fairy liquid too, to wash the old wax/polish remnants off before I clay - BUT I only do it when I KNOW I will be polishing and waxing the car immediately after.

Fairy contains salt so is NOT a good thing to clean the car with.

bingo... but it does pose the question as to what should be used?

Any cheap car shampoo that is NOT ph neutral, washing up liquid, Traffic Film Remover, strong multi purpose cleaner mixes, most cheap snow foams (these are TFR based) and if all else fails the clay bar stage will take all of your previous polish and wax off

Mark... are you saying that if, hypothetically, i was to use a snow foam every week then it would strip wax orf?

are there any foams that you would suggest for use that won't strip wax?

Yes some Snow Foam will strip wax. TBH if the car is fully prepared and waxed properly then I would stay away from foam for regular washing and stick to a good quality shampoo and the two bucket method. (This is what I do with our own vehicles)

A lot of snow foams are based on TFR formulations with the foaming agent added. You need to ask the supplier if it is wax safe for weekly washing and if it is at all based on a TFR formulation. Autobrites original Snow foam is claimed to be wax safe which is why I use it.
