Title: How to replace the front side headlight bulb (side light) golf mrk 4
Post by: Niro on 17 November 2009, 08:00
 Ok I've used the scearch and looked in the maintenance info  I can not see any instructions on how to replace the simple small bulb that is the front side light.

Appologies if there is such info...I couldn't find it

So... how the heck do I simply replace a blown front side bulb, the hand book simply says take it to your dealer.
Do you have to remove the whole lamp unit

Well I know I'm female but I'll feel a bit of a T*t walking in and asking them to replace a bloodly bulb, if you know what I mean  Its not rocket science after all is it, ask me to replace a crank shaft or to rebuld an engine thats different.

I have the bulb, but not a clue....

sadly the easiest way is to remove the front bumper and then the whole unit

the bulb itself twists / pulls straight out but its getting your hand in behind the headlamp that is the difficult part

Mine came out quite easy , but only because they weren't even in properly . But unless you have hands the size of a five year old , or you dont value your knuckle's , take the light out ....sorry

once you know how to do it, you can have the bumper off and headlight out within 10 minutes... or you can struggle for 20 minutes scratching your hands up trying to get the bulb in with the headlight in-situ.

I'm waiting for a bulb to go on the front end.  It'll be an excuse to remove the bumper etc and fit some fancy headlight bulbs and the trick sidelights TJG gave me!

Pay VW to change a bulb?

Whip the bumper off.  I wasn't too keen 1st time, seemed like a big job but it is really very simple.

I think they may fit them for free or a very small charge..only because i saw someone getting that done when i was in there yesterday buying something else.

You can change them without taking the bumper .. although my bumper will have to come off at the weekend to fit my new depo lights an HID's :)

sh!t, my drivers side main beam light has gone and I rang Reg Vardy my local VW dealership to see what they would say.
Well the guy said you pay for the bulb and we'll fit it for free, so i thought ok that sounds good cuz didn't fancy taking the bumper off, so he came back and said that the bulb is £10.50 I laughed and put the phone down :)

Thats doesn't sound too bad a price ..although haven't ever bought standard bulbs..i have 2 sets of bulbs in my office drawer..standard bulbs (the ones the car came with)...phillips X-treme power and a set of blue xenon in the car soon to be replaced with my new lights.

To replace the side light bulbs.
If you follow the link richw911 posted on page 1 it will be easy, and all the parts go back on easy and line up/profile fine.
The side light bulb itself can be pulled out but you need to squeeze the tangs either side of the bulb holder at the same time, I used long nose pliers, I suppose you could use some tweezers if you attempt it without removing the bumper.
It may take you longer than 10 mins the first time, but it really is not too difficult or time consuming to remove the front bumper.
To replace the indicator bulbs I do not remove the bumper, but it is advised to wear gloves as your hands will suffer, it is quite a fiddley job.
If you have large hands, remove the bumper.
