Title: Yesterday all my troubles... bloody came home!
Post by: tariqb on 09 December 2009, 22:31
Yesterday was a crap day...

Driving home the engine oil light came on.. ok i thought I pull up & i'll top up the oil and put in about a litre -

Another half mile later on it came again so i pulled into Tesco carpark - went inside and bought 4litres of oil checked the dipstick and saw it was thirsty - no oil at all - so i poured in all 4 litres - Then the tears nearly began - looked underneath the car and saw all of it pouring out - in fact it was haemorraging -I had put in a new sump 2 months ago - i was seriously p*ssed off !!

What I want to know is how can I stop this happening for the third time and what oil should i put in...again..!

I have the mobile mechanic coming round in the morning and he's already got a standard sump - there are tons of road humps where i live and i was being extra careful anyway - still it busted - for the future can i get a sump protector/guard or something ? And what oil?

I think VW are complete thieves - making a sump out of Aluminium!!  - the lowest part of the car and making it out of soft metal - complete jokers!

yeah you can get a metal undertray for about £80  and also in last month golf+ there's a company doing shallow sumps

Do you know the aftermarket companies name?
I found this part number 1JO 018 930c - for the guard which suggests its a vw part

I used 0-40w in my golf gti non turbo and it used about a litre a week, so dont go that thin lol, i would reccomend 10-40 casterol magnatec, good round oil which isnt stupidly priced.

i would also add that on removing your sump have a look at the pick up pipe oil pump etc and if you have acess to a torque wrench just remove one or two big end caps to have a look at the big end bearing shells for any signs of damage as you have run it with little/no oil not a good thing for the bottom end tbh to be starved of oil
