Sounds like a good idea!
Especially after all I've read about scammers today!

as our recent friend demonstrated though, it's not difficult to quickly do a load of posts.

how about coming up with something... like minimum of 100 and one month of being active or something...

and does it cost or w.e to not allow guest's ? wouldnt be a bad idea to block them and make them create an account?

Classifieds section would be very quiet if users had to have 100 posts! Would people want that?

Does seem a shame to hide sections. Guess need to weigh up how useful the classifieds are for the majority against the very few who ruin it.

There plenty of things that could be done but as has been mentioned the section would be very quiet. People come on here purely to sell because they know people will buy. Obviously there are scammers about, but my theory on it all should be to go through a more secure method of paying, like PayPal, at least then you've got something to fall back on.

People that send money directly to other people's banks etc shouldn't do that, to prevent such from happening. Either meet them, or PayPal.

Paypal is not that good, send money as a gift you have no comeback also if it goes amiss and the guy has cleared his account out you have no real chance of getting any money back.

Don't send as a gift, and I'm just saying PayPal is a better option than transferring directly to a bank.

If some needs 100+ posts to be allowed to scam people I'm sure it wouldn't take them long to get them and if it would get them a few hundred quid it wouldn't bother them too much. Then there is the fact that people might feel more comfortable buying from someone who has that many posts. I know that if I notice someone with a few posts is selling something then my I'm automatically sceptical of them.

Don't let a few tw@s ruin what I believe is a good classifieds section. Like Shady said, people just need to be a bit more switched on when buying things.

what about giving a rating/feedback to those that are selling?

as you can see here... the following vendor has no rating...

funny that... seeing who it is

Why not do as a lot of other forums do, premium membership of say £10 a year and they are the only ones who can sell stuff plus on another forum I am on you need 1000 posts before you can sell something.

Charging to sell will reflect in a negative way. As I've said people come here purely to sell, and a lot of the time it might just be once or twice, why would someone pay a tenner to sell on here? It would be cheaper for them to go to eBay.

The post count theory won't work either as has already been mentioned. If someone wants to make a few hundred from scamming, it's not going to hurt them much to stick around for a few weeks and post to get their count up.

I think Guy's feedback idea would be a great idea. At least it would provide users with a more trusted view of the seller, regardless of posts. People that only come here to sell then will be able to build a good foundation based on feedback, and long running members also will have a chance to do it as well. No doubt there may be a couple of times someone has sold, got good feedback and then scams, but it would most likely be very very rare occasions.

I bought some carbon race seats on my credit card through paypal.  The guy emptied his account straight away so paypal didn't pay up and the credit card said it was a payment authorised by me so not fraudulent.

The only protection is to be sensible.  Say you'll pick the items up as you or are a friend are local.  Get photos and a telephone landline etc.  And the golden rule, if it sounds too good to be true...

+1      Whatever you do then the scammers will find a way round it. If the item you are buying is valuable then go fetch it. I personally have never been scammed and it must feel real bad but if the item was that valuable to me I would insist on cash on collection or no deal.

Not really sure there is a great way around this other than the old 'buyer beware'.

If you make it so that you have to reach a certain number of posts before you can post an advert then the scammer will just do that. If you make it too high then the classifieds will be dead - for example, 15k members have not even reached 10 posts!

If you introduce a feedback scheme (assuming it is even possible) you can then fake that - open multiple accounts and +1 each other. So I can't see how that helps and perhaps even provides a false view of trust!

If you look at this thread http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=144524.0 and I don't mean to pick on the last poster exactly but even after people have said in the thread it is a scammer, plus the signature on the scammer account, a user is still asking about the 'sale'.

Hiding the classifieds until you reach 10 posts for example, will mean that a very limited audience can then see the items for sale.

No easy answer!

I will only buy from members I know OR collect the item if near enough / meet them at a show etc.

Only time i would take a risk is on a low a value item for say £10.

Just my 2p

Don't allow sub-89ers to buy anything from people selling on the forum.

That should thin out the victims pretty quick .

Ive not read evrythind said but i think this is a good idea, I'd say a minimum of at least 100posts before anyone can sell. That way people can read where and what the person has been posting and how active they are on the forum to actually see if they are an enthusiast or not

Many of the sellers on here come here purely to sell and are genuine, by introducing a minimum post count of 100 it'll deter potential sellers away from the site, and it's a big section of the site to risk losing (mainly the site users will dip out more than anything).

It also wouldn't be hard for scammers to post randomly and sound enthusiastic if it means they can make a quick buck.

ye i supose thats a fair point, it wouldn't be hard for them to post randomly but may but first time scammers off and mabey deter them to other site (not saying thats right but there are a lot of users on here compaired to smaller forums)
