Ceramic coating

Is it worth buying some for application to a brand new car? I have always used diamond brite but things move on.

Diamond Brite is rubbish compared to a ceramic coating. I've got gtechniq stuff on mine and it's excellent.

I had my brand new GTI detailed and ceramic coated a couple of weeks ago with Kamikaze products. Full details and pics here:

http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=284610.0

Ceramic coatings do vary, depending on a) how it's applied (and how many coatings etc) and b) the products used. You get what you pay for and IMO it's always worth getting a specialist to do it for you, unless you have the facilities/conditions at home to correct/apply properly.

IMO Kamikaze are the best, with Gtechniq second, but each person will have their own requirements, personal preference, and price point.

Ignore the rubbish the dealer will try and sell you (Diamondbrite, Supaguard etc), that will wash off pretty much straight away, is applied badly by a sponge monkey at the dealer, and for pretty much the same money (or a bit more) you can have it done properly.

I had already seen your thread and it does look amazing, I have stretched my budget to breaking point but managed to order a new gti pp, I am a keen amateur detailer so was hoping of giving it a good go myself, hence asking the question.

It depends how you're using your cars, what you want the coating to achieve for you and your budget. I'd always argue that PPF is better than CC for stone chip protection based on my experience.

Some of my cars have Xpel PPF and others have ceramic coating. I'd recommend a detailer accredited application versus picking up a consumer product. I don't think consumer products are as durable and with the professional grade products, they're so hard when cured, to remove them, you have to wet sand the whole car so it's not something that you want to get wrong which is why manufacturers insist on certification and strictly limit sales of the product to professionals only.

Preparation is key and having applied a consumer product once, you have to be so meticulous to avoid trapping any imperfections. Detailer studios generally have much better dust prevention and management than your own garage.

I had the option of Kamikaze Enrei versus Gtechniq but elected Gtechniq Crystal Serum Ultra as the warranty was 9 years versus 5 and costs were not far apart. I rationalised that in the event that I sell the car, any time remaining on the warranty would be of greater appeal to a buyer.

With both, you get a registration plate and paperwork from an accredited detailer. I would check that the detailer is accredited to ensure you have protection before giving them the business.

I'm over two years in with the ceramic gtechniq stuff and it's the same as when it was first applied. Still beads like day one.

If you want to do it yourself without spending a fortune, get some of this with -  https://www.theultimatefinish.co.uk/polish-angel/master-sealant-the-original.aspx

Probably the easiest sealant to apply and buff off. Great on price. 50ml will do 3 or 4 cars at least.

Main thing with any sealant is prep.

Wash, fallout remover, tar remover, Clay. Then a polish. Hand or machine. Then panel wipe and sealant. 2 coats of the Master Sealant will be good for 12 months if you look after it.
