Title: Gear issues
Post by: mk2_cookie on 07 May 2019, 16:05
So have recently picked up a 1989 GTI, when I was driving it home. It decided that 5th gear didn't want to work anymore and just kicked out whilst doing 70mph. Has anyone experienced an issue like this before?

Mine wouldn't go into 5th after being sat for about a year, but it came back after a bit of use. The linkage has some slack in it, so one of my next jobs is to fit an overhaul kit.

Firstly refurb your linkage and realign it [cheap and easy].

If that doesn't sort it you could try a gearbox oil change, but it will be likely your gearbox has an internal issue and will require refurb/replacement. Fortunately on a Mk2 that's still relatively cheap and easy :)
