o really whatelse you got lined up to do? what car you thinking of getting? mark 5?

remap after crimbo
uprated clutch - got the prices etc so will start picking up pieces over the next few months
Anniversay suspension

after that i intend to enjoy it for a couple of years; my next car will most likely be an Audi as i don't like the MK5 except in GTI trim and the spyshots of the MK6 look fooking sh!te!!  plus the mileage i do rules out getting a GTI so it will be another derv for sure

what bhp will u be pushing with the remap?
whats recommended in the world of clutches and best £Â£Ã‚£wise?

must so alot of mileage and a job that u drive ur car all day then
Title: Re: Philips X-Treme power bulbs
Post by: Rhyso on 17 December 2007, 20:20
Sachs or Helix do good stuff; i'm going for a Sachs kit.

uprated is needed as you take the power up and with a remap i'll be easliy pushing the limits of the standard clutch; just as well spend a few extra quid and get one which will last the life of the car.

you got a 5 speed box? as i think you can fit a G60 flywheel and clutch kit which means OEM feel and reliability :afro:

have a look over on UKMKIV's net as there's loads of threads about clutches there

what bhp will u be pushing with the remap?

must so alot of mileage and a job that u drive ur car all day then

should see 180bhp and close to 300lbs ft of torque  might have it trimmed back though and just make sure i have as smooth a torque curve as possible

don't do silly mileages but for me its more cost effective to have a derv; got a few European road trips planned over the next couple of years so it makes sense

dipped and full beam can be done with the headlights done in situ; sidelights are easier to replace if you remove the headlights though  unless you got fingers of a small child or even have a small child which can do the job

I havent ordered them yet tbh

When I do, I was just going to order the ones you linked in your original post. I was looking at my lights last night (all be it in the dark) and really cant see how Im going to get the casing off and get the new bulbs in. I also havent looked about for a guide yet, so there will probs be one somewhere (I hope).

think there is a big spring clip on the back of the headlight; push this to one side and remove the cover.

each bulb is held in place by a clip which you pinch together and then pull out towards you

Don't know what I was worreid about :D

Shall take a look today (with a tourch, in the dark, in the cold) and might even get the ordered tonight if it looks nice and simple. Whats all this about side lights? I take it thats the side inidicator bit above the wheel? why would you want to replace that?

The bulbs will be you best bet mate ,Unless youve got £800 spare to get the OME ones, I dont think the "cheap" HID kits are legal either.

Been lookin at Hid kits which are around £100, they say they are legal and stuff but nothings cheap(well compared to £800) for no reason. But if the bulbs are really that good then its probably a waste of money to go for hid. Thanks for the tip mate
Title: Re: Philips X-Treme power bulbs
Post by: AlanD on 28 December 2007, 23:02
Well, got the bulbs on and they really are an improvement. The drivers side light was a complete ASS to get done as the battery gets right in the way and its realllly hard to clip back on. Get them on, there good.

I didnt get the bluevision ones on as it was getting dark and starting to rain so Im probs going to try and get them put in on Sunday. Because I have left the sidelights in you can really see the diffrence in colour (the sidelights are a soooo much more "yellower" compared to the more white light thats produced by these new bulbs).

All in all a bargain and a worthwhile investment for £32.99.

I have just fitted these to my 4mo - and im impressed, would deffo recommend them and power bulbs then the standard candles VW fitted.

Did anyone have trouble fitting the free 'cool blue' sidelights?

WTF? and where/how do they fit in??? or have I lost the plot?
Title: Re: Philips X-Treme power bulbs
Post by: AlanD on 31 January 2008, 15:04
The cool blue ones are much easier to fit than the main ones, there is about 1000000 square foot more of access to them, what bit are you having problems with?
Title: Re: Philips X-Treme power bulbs
Post by: Booky16v on 31 January 2008, 15:09
Where do they go?

Bonnet opened, spring clip for sidelight opened which reveals a loom of wires but nowhere to 'plug' the bulb into..........bonnet closed, back inside, cup of tea.

As you reveal the Loom follow the wires to the bottom one (top one is high beam) and then there is, humm whats the best way to describe this, a kind of push mechanism. You would hold it liek your holding a pen with your thumb and finger and push it together and then it pulls out, replace the bulbs same as you did with the others ones.

Does that make any sense? Its kinda hard to explain.

Just ordered some of these bulbs. Hope i've ordered the right ones. I bought 2 sets, one for dipped beam and one for main beam (think they're H1's and H7's?) Confused myself a bit so I wouldnt be surprised if I get two of the same! Has anyone else ordered one set for dipped and one for main beam? For the mk4's are H1 and H7 the right ones for these?

If you ordered the ones on the first page (they are the main beam ones). You should get a set of "Blue Vision" sidelights (first turn on the light switch, I assume this is what you called dipped?) for free :)

Think he means the high beam (one you use for lanes) and the dipped on the first page.

yeh I bought the dipped ones with the free sidelights and then some main beam ones which are for the country lanes. Just wasn't sure whether 'H1' and 'H7' were the correct codes for both of these lights. They've been despatched now anyway so ill soon find out on monday!!

i have changed one headlight (the easy one, even though I was still seriously f**ked off  with the bar-steward afterwards) and cant seem to notice a difference atm. They look the same when the lights are on. Are they supposed to look different or just put more light ahead of you when driving?

Wots the best way of tackling the other one? remove the bumper and grill or battery?

if you're planning to use the W5W as sidelights, they don't fit, the factory xenons use H6W for sidelights.

yes

main beam is H7:

http://www.powerbulbs.com/product_list.asp?cat1=39&cat2=24

dipped is D2S:

http://www.powerbulbs.com/product_list.asp?cat1=39&cat2=37

although if you're replacing them i'd consider a higher temperature light

will get back to you with indicator

EDIT

the indicator is a H21W

chome indicators are going to make no odds what-so-ever as the orange bits built into the cluster, its a clear bulb that goes in if you look at the pic in the link you can see the orange without the bulb in

either of these

IIRC the ones from VW are £5 each so a trip to the stealers might be easier

To be totally honest I couldn't tell difference from one bulb to the next on the roads theses days. Any uprgade bulb I've bought in the past still look like candle light until you spash out on Xenon HID's.

Mind you the H7 oscram night breakers didn't look to bad but only lasted about 3 - 4 mouths before one of them burnt out  :undecided:
