Title: Exhaust Rattles at 2500 rpm..... ?
Post by: gti16v on 24 April 2003, 12:47
Hi,

I have recently bought a Golf GTI MK3 16v, which I think is a fantastic car. The only problem is that I get a resonant rattle at about 2500 rpm.

I think it is due to the exhaust heat shields vibrating against the chassis and have been under the car and tightened all the front shields from the bulkhead to the rear box, but this has make absolutely no difference what so ever.

Im stuck as to what to try next, has anyone else had this or a similar problem?

Thanks...

James.

James,

I have exactly the same problem with the same car, and would be keen to know if anyone has any ideas for a fix.

I get the rattle which I cannot really place, at between 2,000-2,500 in all gears

I had the sam problem but mine kept getting worse.  What it was is that one of the rubbers holding the exhause had come off and when the exhaust was getting hot it was rubbing against the car.  You will need to put the car in the air and have a look to see if one has come off.  Make sure you put it on stands.  If not bend the heat shields away from the body work untill it stops.
