Title: Remap my MK3 GTi, HELP?!?
Post by: sms-aka-me on 27 February 2017, 21:58
Hi everyone,
So last night, I finally got my hands on my first MK3 GTi 8v, R reg (1997)- I believe, I am from Ireland and moved to the UK recently so I due struggle with the plates here, haha.

So basically I want some info on remapping these cars.... yay or nay? Pros & Cons?
Will it effect insurance hugely?
How will the car benefit from it?
What kind of gains will I see from it?
What should I add in to aid the map.

Any and all help is hugely appreciate.

From my experience of naturally aspirated a map (im sure mk3s are a chip) isnt going to do alot.
Someone might be along to say different though. For the money id rather spend it somewhere else on the car

is there much work involved in doing a 20vT conversion?

Depends how much you like work. How much you want to change.
Youll need to splice the mk4 loom into the mk3
You could use the standard gearbox and flywheel but how long it lasts i couldnt say.
The next option is a 16v mk3 gearbox and flywheel plus hydrolic clutch set up
Interooler and pupeork
Down pipe and exhaust
Roughly. Theres probally some bits i missed but its been a couple of years since ive done a 20vt conversion

16V May be the simpiler project so you recon?
Can your turbo the 16v and still keep the 8v gearbox, clutch, flywheel etc.?

Also, I cant seem to find any forums or threads for a 'how to do' conversion.
any links??

Theres some on here definately. Alot have people have done it.
You could turbo a 16v but the box is still the weak point.
Its also easier to find a 20vt than a abf.

If you change the engine then I wouldn't keep the 8v box because they're very weak.

What's your budget?

to be honest I don't have a budget, as I am new to all this, so I'm trying to gain as much knowledge and info as possible. whats the average cost usually ?
Obs, I don't wanna spend thousands. But I do want to do it correctly.

Theres people sell everything youll need for 500 out of a doner car
Then its upto you what you want to change
A downpipe will set you back 150 unless you can weld
Exhaust is what ever people charge
Kntercooler ans pipe work 200ish
Cambelt kit and water pump 150
Clutch (solid flywheel conversion) 200ish
Wiring your time and patience

Youll spend over 1000 unless you buy a full 1.8t and use what ypu need and sell the rest pluss the bits of the mk3 ypu dont use.

Plus if you can't spanner yourself then it'll cost a lot more.

I would be confortable do a lot of the work myself, welding isn't an issue, I can do this also. its the wiring, and ensuring I have everything needed is where Id panic lol

Wiring isnt that bad. Ce2 to 20vt is al9t easier than ce1 to 20vt but mk3 is ce2.
People charge i think around 150 to make the looms and then the ecu just needs deimobilising
