VIN Number
« on: 22 August 2010, 13:06 »
Just wondering what peoples VIN numbers look like

Mine is WVWZZZ1KZAW******

According to all the tyre alignment people I have visited recently , the 1K designator means MK5 Golf and the MK6 should be 5K

In ELSA, the VW workshop procedures, 1K is a MK5 and you have to enter 5K to get the MK6 procedures.

According to VCDS 1K is the MK5 platform and 5K is the MK6 platform.

Maybe I have a re-shelled MK5 just like everyone said, a MK5.5

Mk6 GTI 3dr | DSG | Tornado Red | 18" Monza 2 | LED Xenons | RNS510 | Bluetooth | Smoked LED tails | Cruise | Reversing Camera | TPMS | - now sold :(

Yes I've used that site but it doesn't tell you much.

VW Golf/Golf GTI/Golf Plus/Golf Variant/Jetta
model year 2010, production number ######
production plant Wolfsburg
The entered VIN cannot be checked for validity.

Other sites will show you what each character means.

Another site show mine as Golf Mk 5 1980 the same as Mikes.

Looks like all MK6 Golfs have the 1K in the VIN number which confuses all the third party systems as they think it's a MK5

Mine is the same as that one and if yours is a GTi then I'm not sure how that is. Does that mean that all Mk6's are the same two characters?. In 2006 1J was supposed to be Golf/GTi, 1K was a Jetta.

I write programs so I've decided to make a VW VIN Number app where you type the number in and it tells you all the details for that number. I've searched the web for all info and some show different letters that others, they appear to vary for different years.

There is a PDF you can download.

Any useful links for VW VIN Numbers would be appreciated to make this app.

Actually ETKA shows a lot more info for the VIN number. The Paint code, Engine code, Transmission code, FinalDrive Indent, Interior Trim Code is shown but no other site shows or talks about these being in the number.

Does the 1K not reffer to the chassis number?

The 1K is supposed to refer to the platform type, ie 1K is a  MK5 Golf, 5K is a MK6 Golf.

the VIN Is decoded like this

WVW - Manufacturer. Volkswagen
ZZZ - Filler letters, mean nothing
1K - Platform
Z - Another filler,
A - Manufacturing Year, A = 2010
W - Manufacturing Location, in my case Wolfsburg
****** - Serial Number of car

It seems the platform number is wrong, however on the boot label or the one in the service book it does say 5K underneath the VIN number
Mk6 GTI 3dr | DSG | Tornado Red | 18" Monza 2 | LED Xenons | RNS510 | Bluetooth | Smoked LED tails | Cruise | Reversing Camera | TPMS | - now sold :(

The chassis number and VIN number are the same thing.

This is what I've found out for my program.

Yes, VW don't include that info and just use Z to fill in the spaces in the VIN number.

The model code is a homologation code not the platform or design code (Golf 6 design code: VW Typ 5K, homologation code 1K).
Golf GTI VI DSG - died on the road, resurrected, came back as zombi, sold
R - rising blue, 5-door, DSG, ACC, something something...
