Title: GTI rebuild

Hi New member
Just purchased my first ever golf 1989 GTI 8 valve. Looking forward to the rebuild any tips, do I keep it original or modify?
What’s your thoughts ? Bearing in mind I am not a spring chicken.

Welcome. Originality wins out these days with a few choice upgrades :) Can't beat a nice oem+ Gti!

Hi yes I agree I have been to a few shows and seen less original than modify, what sort of simple upgrades would you be thinking

I usually start with the running gear; upgrade front hubs/brakes to 16v (256mm) or G60 (280mm), stitch welded wishbones with TT rear bushes, upgraded anti-roll bars front and back, Mk4 Golf rear caliper conversion (perhaps the Polo rear stub axle conversion to do away with the taper roller bearings), decent set of coilovers to get ride height set nicely, maybe some spacers on the wheels to get them sat right..

Add in 4 wheel alignment and gear shifter rebuild kit and it'll handle and stop very nicely after that lot :)

a .80 or .75 5th gear fitted to the original box is a nice mod for more relaxed motorway runs. looks standard too.
