would it be sensible to up the gauge of the alternator wires and battery earth in order to stop my batt going flat, or would a gti alternator be a better option?

go get a passat or audi alternator from le scrappy for ?10 in 90Amp flavor. That'll sort you out ;D

(polish it before putting it on. save you doing it later ;))

Before you spend a pennie you need to look in to why it's going flat as I'd say it's a fault somewhere - how have u got your Headunit wired up as this is the most common mistake!

Early Golf's never came with a remote live, plus it's easy to get it wrong and there's a trickle charge coming off the battery 24/7 ....

I agree, before jumping the gun, make sure there isn't too much draw when the car is off.  Then test the battery, if it's over 4 years, it might be on the way out.

If all your mods have brought up the draw (while running) then a Mk3 (90amp) from a junkie might indeed do the trick.
