Title: Mk6 GT TDI Fan Running
Post by: A13XDB on 25 April 2017, 13:25

Sorry to wade straight in with a question having just joined the forum.

I have a 2010 Mk6 GT TDI which is a fantastic car.
Since purchase, bought from new in 2010, it continues to run the cooling fan for around 10 to 15 minutes once parked up.
We have repeatedly spoken to the local dealer about this and they say it is the Cat cleaning.

The car is not a high mileage vehicle, 47000 since new.
Always put decent fuel in it, Shell or Shell V-Power and never supermarket fuel.

I would appreciate some advice on what may be happening.

It's probably the diesel particulate filter (DPF) in the process of going through an active regeneration cycle (not the Catalytic converter cleaning) at the point you switch off your engine. The regeneration burns off the soot deposits that have accumulated in the DPF.

More likely to happen frequently if you're doing mainly short journeys.

There's lots of nformation on DPF regeneration on this forum and on the internet. The post at the link below gives a useful overview;

What sort of journeys do you do in the car??  Have you ever had the DPF / glow plug light come on?

If its only short journeys then yes the cooling fans staying on would be because the car has / is doing a regen

However it shouldn't be after every journey. Usually a sensor partially fails. However this normally causes the DPF NOT to regen and thus you get the engine / DPF lights coming on

Thank you people.

It does only do short journeys in the main, note the mileage.
We bought it when the word was "buy diesel, it's the fuel of the future and the environment"

I would suggest getting a bottle of Forte Diesel Treatment or Millers Fuel additive, pop that in a tank and take the car for a good run and mainly use 3rd / 4th at higher RPM's, up hills etc to get the car up to temperature and help burn off the soot in the DPF

Every car needs a bit of 'Italian tuning' once in a while

Thanks for the advice. Living East Anglia hills may be an issue.

OK. The car has now completed 56000 miles.  9 years old, nearly, on a 60 plate.
Even with the occasional "Italian Tune" and fuel additive it runs the fans.
There are no error lights or faults.
The car gets the FULL VW treatment at a VW dealer when required.
VW say it's cleaning. I must say it more meticulous than my mother in law if that's the case.

The car runs spot on returning >50 to the gallon on a run.

In two minds to change to update technology in the car.
The car is used by her in doors and she likes the tech in my Mk7 GTI PP.
As you can imagine it is like new, minor scrape on one alloy.

Thoughts and comments appreciated.
