89 8v GTI Digi wont start
« on: 15 June 2017, 11:55 »
Hi All,

Iv had relatively trouble free motoring until last night.

Driving home at 30mph the revs just dropped and as i was changing down gears. Car turns over but will not fire up again.

Previous to this happening it did take a while to get started like it turns over then didnt start for a few seconds but once it was running it was fine.

Had to call RAC who sent a helpful guy. He checked to see if any voltage was going to the spark plugs which he confirmed their wasnt. He tested voltage being delivered from the coil to the dizzy, nothing read. Diagnosed as faulty coil.

Ordered a new Bremi from ECP, fitted it and still having the same issues. Turns over, wont start. Spark plugs were wet so fuel is getting there, just no spark again.

In the last 10 months its had new spark plugs, dizzy, rotor arm and now coil pack

With the relay id check its working. If it is ide go check ignition amp. It should have a live to it and 1 wire goes to hall sender on dizzy. Also theres an earth goes to battery from ot. When they dont work the car wont run

Replaced complete distributor for second hand one that was from a running car. Still not getting any spark from the coil to the distributor

Im getting 24v going to the hall sensor connector and from the harness that connects to the ignition module...not sure what else to check now. Relay is clicking

Found the fault. It turned out to be the ignition module ontop of ECU. It is still taking time to start but atleast firing up now
