Is it possible to update the maps on the standard Golf NAV?

Yes, perfectly possible.

On Standard Nav you just update the SD card in slot 2... copy the new files onto there and stick it back in. Nothing else to do, the system reads maps from the card.

On NavPro you have to build an SD card with an update and let it copy it from the card to the SSD on the NavPro.

Its simpler with basic Nav...

Is this the official way to update maps in VW navigation systems? Only ask as I have 3 years of free map updates so I'd like to use that before sourcing them elsewhere.

Build an SD card? What on earth are you on about  you just need to drop the unzipped map data into the route of the card and that's it.

I've just managed to do it including being interupted by 2 power cuts.
That just about says it all

Well, depends if you want to use a big old card or only have a smaller one and need to just put the relevant version on there - the zip file contains MIB 1 and 2 and now maybe 3 data!

The longest part is unzipping the file and I don't think you can just put parts of the map data on. Granted a high speed 32gb card is best but it's a fairly simple job.
