Autos are always a bit thirstier no matter what VW say.

Also higher octane fuel can help for the GTI and R.

I've never seen over 40, but I am averaging over 35, over 10K of mixed miles.

Well my GTI is DSG, I run it on Shell V Power Nitro Plus and averaged 39.6 mpg over 303 miles from Yeovil to Scarborough, yesterday. 50/50 motorway and A/B roads, travelling as fast as seemed "sensible" and sometimes a bit more! I know I could have averaged over 40, being a bit more "sensible", but that's not why I bought the car.

I think the problem with a DSG gear box is that it is just so easy and enjoyable to accelerate hard. Driven with a lighter right foot and they should be just as economical. Especially the new 7 speed with the tall 7th gear.

I'm having similar thoughts - I've got my GTD for another 18 months of so and have averaged 45mpg over the last 58k....but more power keeps calling me.

I had a GTi with DSG as a loaner and didn't think the car was well suited to the 'box, it always seemed to select the wrong gear for me. Odd.

The DSG box learns how you drive and you have to learn how to drive it! Takes a bit of getting used to, but, with the DSG in "D" you can make it do more or less what you want it to, just with the throttle. If all else fails, use the paddles!

Manual GTI with just under 10k miles, run on V Power since tank 1.  Long term average is c36mpg, but I quite regularly see 40mpg without trying too hard.

Something to look forward too for the next change then

Very pleased with mine on all counts, I can perfectly understand why people buy GTDs, even considered one myself, but the GTI just ticks so many boxes including the economy.

Its £50 a month difference between 20k miles in a manual GTI vs a manual GTD using this:

http://www.nextgreencar.com/tools/fuel-cost-calculator/

~3p a mile more.

Personally, I'd sooner not find the £50 a month because I'm not driving for pleasure, but... anyway, I thought I'd add this perspective
Current: Mk8 GTI DSG, Adelaides, DCC, HUD, HK, Winter Pack, Rear Camera.. Aka "HMS Weasel"

Gone: 2017 Mk7.5 GTD,manual, NavPro
Gone: 2014 Mk7 GTD, manual, NavPro, DCC

Using that calculator I am only saving £1320 in the GTD over a GTi and an R would be costing £1360 more than a GTi a year.
