Lowering and Spacers
« on: 21 February 2017, 16:21 »
Hi all,
I've had my GTI for a couple of weeks now and I'm loving it but now is the time for a bit of modding, I want to lower the car and add spacers, can anyone give me some advice on what springs to go for?  I was thinking of a 35mm drop but is this a bit too much?  It is a daily driver and I used to drop the kids off at nursery so don't want it to be too gangsta :)    I was also thinking about spacers maybe 15mm on rear and 10mm on front?  I had a set of H&R on my old S3 and they did the trick nicely so I was thinking about the same again?

Any advice is appreciated.

I'd agree that 35mm would give a great stance and H&R offer a set of springs with that drop. If you didn't want to go so low ST offer a 20mm and 30mm set and then Eibach also do 25mm/15mm springs as well.

For spacers I'd say 10mm front and 15mm rear but this is also something down to personal choice and how you want it to look.

I fitted 15 and 10mm spacers and wished I'd got 20 and 15mm ... but sold the 10mm ones no problem and now waiting for the 20s to arrive

I fitted a set of Eibach sportlines and whilst they are quite firm, I'd say they are ok for a daily driver (mine is). I like the sportlines as they give a slight bit of rake - you can get a bit of a look of 'reverse rake' if you lower the same front and rear but it's all personal preference.

Don't know if DPM stock them but due to some daft licencing deal (at the time), I could only find Sportlines for the Mk7 Golf at Larkspeed.

I fitted 25mm eibach springs on a previous car they were spot on all round weather solo or a full car no rub on arches
As for spacers loads of pics in various post's mine included I fitted 20mm and 15mm they sit nice and flush.
If your thinking doing both don't forget the lower and wider you go could result in wheel arch rub...

I hope the H&Rs on the GTI are better in terms of ride than they were on the R, for me Eibachs as whilst I never but them on first (except for the BMW as learnt my lesson) I have ended up with them

Never a fan of spacer only thing on a lowered car with spacers is if you drive it hard or go over speed humps you may well catch the front arch liner screws

You're right - whilst not done with spacers, I've fitted aftermarket wheels (19 x 8.5 ET 46) with 235/35 R 19 tyres and had to do the wheelarch screw mod on the front.

Yeah was just a thought for the guy iv got the standard 19 santis on with the spacers and tdh they do fill the arch well without lowering.
As I said iv been dun the lowering route before and it's not for me on the gti constant worries with grounding etc etc

35mm on the rear  is that not too low?? someone told me dont go more then 30mm on the rear as u will have some issues going over speed humps etc etc, so cause i was in two minds iv delayed getting my lowered to as I'm not sure what to go with my self lol  :undecided:
