Seems like I'm the only one not bothered about these? I have a red car and thing the standard lights look fine. yes these look sweeter but not the sort of mod i'll be doing as the car will then externally be modified.
I think if I didn't have a red car the need would be increased though....
-
I see things the other way around: not having the LEDs makes your car look out of date and/or you like a cheapskate for not shelling out for the option. I agree, though, that they don't look at their best on red.

Oi you cheeky sod! If I had a girly white one then yes but on my macho red one they are not crucial!

Nah, I can defo see the appeal but I don't want my car to look modified externally. However the stock lights really blend into the red bodywork and I can imagine that stick out like cherry beacons on yours so I think if I had white (or any other colour) i'd defo do it. seems like a good deal though!

Steve, probably a daft question but do the connectors you get with the lights just clip onto the ones in the car? or do the factory fitted ones have to be cut? the reason i ask is that i'm interested in a set (might be a while) but i'd like to change them back if i sell the car without too much muckin about.
Sorry if this has been covered.
-
They are plug and play adapters, so no cutting of the original wires/connectors is required
-
Superb mate! i'll keep an eye on the group buy thread and i'll have a set off you if your still doing them when i'm ready. I'll probably sort something with you to fit and code them too if thats ok?
-
Sure just give me shout when your ready
-
Top man!
-
Update time.
I hope to be collecting everything towards the end of this week. I will then post the repair wires and connector housings to Steve P for assembly.
The lights I will box up, and send out to you all. I will request addresses later this week. They will be sent Via DHL, if this is not suitable and you would rather another courier then let me know in the address email.

I will visit the TPS on the 3rd to sse how many kits are here, and how many kits I can make up. I will pass what i can to Steve P. Unfortunately some may wait until 6th.................

You won't regret them, mate. My wife was driving the GTI the other day and I was following her in the Espace. It was dusk and the lights looked superb and you get that instant on/off with the brake lights - orgasmic (how sad are we?) :nerd:

Was expecting a better return to be honest . They are very smart guy's and I would like them also. But my GTI is due soon and I have been adding dealer accessories and is hitting my wallet quite hard. So think I will get them later on in the year from the dealer.

.....yeahhhh...damn...now I see it too........
BTW
It looks more like one of the proto Golf GTI MK V designs that didn't make it to the board... :lipsrsealed:

DBs are not very attractive, as already agreed by you and VmW in your 'nonsense thread' page 15.
I simply fail to understand why they would look better on a car's backside.
You are being weak.

Yes from behind in real life and in the dark it does.
There was one in front of me the other day and I had to race in front juts to see what it was.
In fact I think the new Polo looks the same as the Golf from certain angles head on when it is on the road.

Well I dont know about you or anyone else, but I can tell the difference between 2 set of LED lights on either side of the car (GTI/R) over 1 set on either side on this. Plus the fact they are feckin huge, almost the size of the back window height.

On a screen it is chalk and cheese. 200 yards in front of you in the dark is another matter.
-
Any doubts you may be having over these lights must surely be dispelled when you see this. You can tell they are designed and manufactured by the same people that did the GTI lights (Hella). Hell, they even look good on red

In the dark I'll see 2 sets 2 of lights on either side, with this I'll see 1 set. It's not hard to tell, honestly.

Does the polo GTI even have LED rear lights as the regular polo just has bulbs in them lights and the L shape just does not look right with bulbs.

Not sure, I thought it did. Sure I saw LED's when the polo GTI avert was on the telly.

All lights are with me now, picked them up today.
One of the connectors is on back order in total (none received as yet 6/4 date given by TPS), and we are waiting for a single wire for one kit.
My plan is to box the lights up ready for collection, and collect all the wires on Wed and get them to Steve by 1st class for loom make up.
Thanks for the patience guys.

I read on another forum that reversing the struts causes them to rub slightly on the body work. The poster also stated that after a few times of using the auto tailgate, it became sporadic of whether the tailgate would actually lift on its own, before finally only lifting the tailgate once in every ten times.
When he went to reverse the struts and put it back to the way it was, he found rust had started
-
Hmm, maybe give that a miss then! :undecided:
-
^^^ Yep saw that too, mine works all the time except when very cold.
Also no sign's of rubbing on mine either, but I wouldn't say its really a worthwhile mod.
-
I thought you had to use the Skoda struts for the GTI to use the auto tailgate open with the keyfob ? It's in another thread I'm sure.
-

Yeah you do but you reverse them which can cause the rub!

Am I right in assuming that if you want to open a different door than the driver door (as programmed pressing twice for all doors)
say e.g. for your mother in law, the hatch automatically opens and lifts up ...besides the fact that your mother in law may pick this up as a sign how you feel about her......it seems to me a bit annoying and out of control...
-
Hi Steve, can you please re-send your message re my address as the link to reply showed an error message. Thanks, diplomat1

Don't think it works like that. A double press will only open the doors not the hatch although I could be wrong as I have mine on one press opens all doors, and although it unlocks the hatch it doesn't actually click open, like if you pressed the middle button on your remote. As that physically opens the hatch slightly.

Doesn't show you how difficult it is to shut! I bet you can no longer grab the inner handle and swing it in a single motion.
I'd be quite useful when you're walking back to your car with a heap of shopping bags. It wouldn't be so useful when your car is in the garage and the boot whacks off the garage roof
-
Doesn't show you how difficult it is to shut!
Good call, I hadn't thought of that!

Sorry Steve, the link back to your message box is corrupted. Could you please email me direct at r.thour@ntlworld.com and I will forward you my address. Can't wait for the lights! As a side note, a VW specialist who I hope to use to code the LED's using VagCom wasn't convinced that the re-coding of the LED's wouldn't cause problems with the DRL. Do the Daytime running lights need to be switched off permanently to stop any errors showing in the main display!

I haven't had any problems with the DRLs since I fitted my LEDs and did the recoding as per SteveP's instructions.

Yes, the annoying adapters. I say annoying, because VW could have made the connectors the same as on the non-LED lights!

Because of were he lives they will be a factory option for the GTI.

Why can't we in the UK be part of the European Circus?
Can we not somehow get these from a VW dealer? Surely it can't be that difficult to source?
I WANT the REDDER ones NOW!
P-L-E-A-S-E.

Soon enough GTI's with the factory fitted rear lights are going to be a rarity going by the number of you retro-fitting led ones.
I came up behind my car yesterday when it was all clean and shiny and decided that I actually like my tail lights just as they are and although I considered going for the led's don't think I will bother now.

That's quite true, a bit like the little lights on the original Mk1 GTI. That said, I still think the LED blocks are more in keeping with the sharp, modern styling of the Mk6.

You will have to have a look at the latest version of etka or at your dealers they may list a RHD version.
heres the lighter ones

Do you meen the rear series 1 lights compared to the later series 2 rear lights?
Or
Whats known as the single headlamp grill (2 front lights) compared to the twin light grill (4 lights)

A version for right hand drive cars is now available according to ETKA, so if your interested I can get them at a similar price to the R group buy
The R version are also listed for the GTI "Edition" model, so looks like they will be standard fit on the ED35
Second observation is there are two versions of the LED's now, one for cars built upto 26/04 and a revision for car built after this :nerd:
-
Hi SteveP:
Yes I am interested.
But first I have to get my RNS 510 + FISCON.
Then I will do the rear lights.
It is important to keep her happy with extra make-up as she ages gracefully or as in my case, disgracefully!
-
Snoopy: yes, I meant the original small rear lights (before 1979, I believe).
BTW, nice comparison of the dark v pink LEDs. Dark win hands down, IMHO.

I've seen them in person and they are really very bright red - almost pink. Certainly a lot brighter than the picture above would have you believe.

But will they look better on a red car than the darker ones?
Your opinion, please.
Thanks.
-
In this photo of the 'pink' LEDs on a red GTI, the camera is shooting against a bright white background (snow). This makes the subject (the lights) appear darker than they really are.
I don't think they will ever look as nice as the darker R blocks, irrespective of the colour of the paintwork. But maybe I have acquired continental tastes: the English tend to try to match colours up, whereas the Continentals go for contrast.

Froggy:
I can see what you mean.
In Snoops 1st picture they do have a pinkish colour which does look horrible, but in the 2nd picture which is a side view and at a distance, they look sort of ok.

I've just got the RNS510 unit and need some VAG COM code done.

I read in the VagCom section on uk-mkiv's that each cable could only be used with one laptop - otherwise you had to have it re-assigned for about £100. Is that p1sh?! I was concerned that one day my laptop would die and I'd have to pay to re-register it with another one!

Kev, the dealer probably would do it for you but charge an arm and leg. Especially if that is all it is going in to the garage for as you are taking up one of their avalaible slots. I think if you were getting it serviced or some warranty work done they would probably do it for free.
I'm sure someone on here mentioned £75 plus have the car for half a day! I'd rather fork out and buy the VAG COM myself than give them that.

I'm beginning to regret missing out on the group buy now.
You would have saved about £12!!
The price quoted was missing VAT, so by the time it was added on it was still about £235.
I ended up just buing from MI - as they were £250 including free shipping, and it came with a disk, case and manual. The GB one was JUST the cable.

Otherwise what would stop say 10 of us getting together and buying the lead and sharing it between us?

Haven't heard anything back. I guess you could all chip in and post one back and forth to whoever needs it. Not sure how well that would work with 10 people that you don't 'reall' know anything about though?!
Any regulars are welcome to come visit me in Aberdeen though... as long as they know what they want done!!

You can use the lead with ANY laptop providing you download the software from Ross Tech
The license is built into the lead itself
I've used my lead on several laptops with no problems whatsoever :nerd:

I was thinking something similar, cause what would happen if your laptop is stolen, or it dies, or you sell it or upgrade etc.
-
I've just been back and read the thread on uk-mkiv's.
Is a 'genuine key USB cable' a different thing to my 'Micro Can USB'.
I couldn't see why the cable couldn't be used on other computers, but the thread suggested different!

Micro CAN will only work on CAN cars such as the MK5 and MK6
HEX-USB will do all the older cars and the newer stuff too so if you got mates you can pimp out your services in exchange for beer tokens

Adapter leads turned up today Thanx Mr. P

 Hi guys any updates?
I'm very interested in the next group buy Steve.
Live in N.Wales so no issue in travelling over to sort via vagcom but better if someone nearer obviously.
What's involved via vagcom?
Should be getting my new GT next week
-
I'm still keen on these, but want any easy way to sort the warning notices out.
Whats the deal with this DIY Ross Tech thing?

I am ready to run the next GB as soon as we can few people interested again.

Dave
Ross tech are creating their official coding guide that's all. They have been asking for people who have don the retro fit to email a scan of their car so they can confirm the configurations that work.
Only the lights are coded to your car you get no bulb out warnings on the dash board.
-
So you can do it this way full DIY no issues?
What parts and costs is there over and above the lights and leads then?
Dave
-
^^^ the only additional cost is the beer tokens for someone to code them if you don't have access to VCDS
-
I'm in between Derby and Nottingham...... who could do that and needs a beer?
Dave
-
I am not too far so would be happy to meet somewhere on the M1, or I know someone in Nottingham that has VAGCOM so could always ask them
-
Thanks for the reply Steve, sounds sweet.
Ok I'm In and I look forward to the next group buy then
Let me know if you need my email addy or tel no. etc.
Cheers, COL.

SteveP - I'm kinda based in East Midlands and North West, would your contacts be able to fit and code the LED rear lights for me? Obviously for a fee. Just out of interest; does anyone know how much VW garages charge for fitting and coding these LEDs? Anyone had a quote yet?

Just been out to check :embarassed:
they are inline so it must be the way the pic turned out cos they arn't adjustable
there is a gap under both outside lights but they are all like that  dont know if the R bumper is a slightly different shape or there is a gap under them aswell, but you can't tell unless you look for it

I like the splitter (on silver, wouldn't show on mine), but I'm not keen on the red & chrome GTI lettering on the grill - looks like a TDI badge
-
Agreed - the wheels really suit the body colour; very nice!

Wheels look great! I'm considering them as my second pair. What's the size of those wheels? :) I prefer the silver GTI badge though. Not sure about the splitter. It probably looks better in real light. In the picture it's hard to see it. At a glance it looks like the front of a US GTI without a splitter.
-
Sorry to go off topic, but whats the ride like with them Steve ?
p.s. they look stunning.
-
^^^ Better than I expected Kev, but still a little crashy and doesn't handle as well 18's either

Being thrilled with ourself, the thought probably did not cross your mind but there is a risk involved here.....
