Title: HOW TO: Retrofit an RNS510 Sat Nav System.
Post by: p3eps on 22 April 2010, 07:10
Here is a quick guide on how to swap your stereo for a Sat Nav version.
It can be done in 10-15 minutes - and is VERY straightforward.

Tools Required:
A trim removal tool (or a butter knife and a cloth)
A T20 Torx Screwdriver

The first step is to remove the current stereo.  Simply stick your trim tool like in the photo above, and pop it.  The trim is only held on with 10 clips which just pop off.

Work your way up this side and round the top and bottom.  Once you have it open enough to get your fingers in then use them instead to save risking marking the dash.  The clips are pretty tough and need quite a big pull to get them off.

Once you get the trim completely off you can remove the 4 x Torx T20 screws that hold the stereo in.

The stereo will simply pull out.  Disconnect the big CAN connector, small MDI connector, and the twin aerial connector.

Put the stereo somewhere safe - NOT on your leather seats

The only difference in fitting is that the Sat Nav unit has a GPS antenna.  The easiest place to fit the antenna is up above where the stereo sits.  You can see in the picture above the RNS antenna is on the right.  I also have another GPS antenna on the left for my Micro RoadPilot.  If you put your hand up, you should feel the space.  My GPS antenna was just a little loose, so I stuck a few layers of electrical tape on the bottom of it to 'beef it up'!  Then it slotted in and felt very secure.

Here is a zoomed in picture of the antenna (before I covered its base in red electrical tape!).  The hole is basically in behind the air vents.

Plus all the connectors back into the stereo and gently slide it into its housing.
Now its just a case of putting the 4 screws back in, and pushing the fascia back on.

Once the Sat Nav has been fitted you may find that not all of the features work straight away.  There are a couple of features like the directions on the MFD and steering controls that may need set up on your car that require either a VagCom cable or a trip to the dealer.
The dealer will be able to enable these features in a couple of minutes.

You can use this if you want mate saves you the trouble?

You need to go into Can Gateway I think its controller 19, on the controller screen go into the Installation List and go half way down the page to controller 37 and tick this then Save Coding, Go out of the controller.

Go into controller 37 Navigation and then into Coding and then Long Coding:

Byte 0 The first 2 boxes should not bit ticked, Unless you have CD changer/MDI media in or Aux in
(http://i556.photobucket.com/albums/ss4/mortygttdi/Byte0.jpg)

Byte 1 This is for the sound system if you have an AMP installed or if you have Dynoaudio installed from factory:(http://i556.photobucket.com/albums/ss4/mortygttdi/Byte1.jpg)

Byte 2 This is how many channels you have working i.e front or back or front and back:(http://i556.photobucket.com/albums/ss4/mortygttdi/Byte2.jpg)

Byte 3 This is for the Mic Diagnostics if you have voice control and also if you have the badge camera in the back like a couple of people,
(http://i556.photobucket.com/albums/ss4/mortygttdi/Byte3.jpg)

Byte 4 This is for speaker monitoring just incase there is a problem on one of them:

Byte 5 Is for the manufacturer speaker arrangement, this should be set to Linear for the VW's
(http://i556.photobucket.com/albums/ss4/mortygttdi/Byte5.jpg)

Byte 6 This is not used in the coding:

Byte 7 Some of the bits in this Byte you may not have if your using f/w 1100 or lower but this is for MFSW, screen colours and comms to the highline. None of them should be ticked unles you have a mk6 golf or dont have voice control.

Hope this helps and just one more thing you cannot use any version of VCDS lower than 9XX

Cheers

Darren

But will VW dealers do this for you if you have retrofitted anything. My dealer won't even turn off the running lights. It seems as if VW have told them all to stop reprogramming what the clients want.

Is this the same for replacing a RCD310 with a RNS510 (just got one )

Thanks

My friend has vag-com versions 409.1 and 504.1, does anyone know if these will work to recode for the RNS510?

my car has DYNAUDIO from the factory and RCD510

if i were to go for the RNS510 would there be a problem running the dynaudio system?

do i need any extra wiring harness etc?

is it just a case of fitting the head unit like for like and hiding the gps antenna behind the dash? that seems too easy!

i don't have access to VAGCOM so would the dealers activate this system for me?

thanks

oh also i don't have bluetooth phone prep. does the RNS510 have this feature built in or do i need the module that fits under the front seat also? i have steering wheel voice controls but they don't work

The RNS 510 plugs straight in and will work* as soon as the radio code has been activated.
No additional wiring is needed.

*You will need either a friendly dealer or a local VAG-COM/VCDS owner to activate the nav directions on the MFD screen (and to get the dynaudio fully working it seems).

The RNS 510 doesn't have Bluetooth inbuilt, from what I can tell from forums the latest SEAT Media System 2.2 which seems to be a SEAT branded RNS 315 (google it as it is similar in some ways to the RNS 510 but different in spec) has inbuilt Bluetooth (but probably needs an external mic fitted at a guess). VW probably also do a Bluetooth version of this headunit fitted to the Passat CC and other models. You'd need to fully digest the contents of the VW NAVI forums to keep up with all the ever changing technology.

thanks for your help there. thats just what i was after

i had a look at vwnavi.com yesterday and lost the will to live after 3 pages of RNS510 threads! its pretty heavy going.

I'm annoyed that the bloke who ordered my car (i bought it new as a cancelled order) didn't spec bluetooth as its the only thing i would have spec'd differently. strange that he upgraded to RCD510 and dynaudio but didn't pay the extra few quid for bluetooth!

i personally wouldn't pay £2k for sat nav but its well worth retro fitting if you can find a cheap one. i won't be ripping my interior apart to fit the bluetooth though.

I've seen RNS510 on ebay for around £600 with the gps antenna so may well take a punt on one. my VW dealer should setting it up for me.

i doubt i would use the sat nab much but the DVD player would be handy for the baby and 30gb HDD means i don't have to leave my iPhone plugged in. i keep forgetting I left it in the car!

one last thing... what software version/model should I go for if I buy used? my car is brand new build. I've see model C,D etc etc

can the firmware be updated etc? can I buy new DVD at later date to keep the maps accurate?

thanks

oh sorry i also forgot to ask about DAB

my car has RCD510 with DAB which i love and want to keep if i do upgrade to RNS510.

do the RNS510 have this as standard or is there 2 types of RNS510 (DAB and non-DAB)?

how would i know if it had DAB if i buy a used one?

thanks for any advice
Title: Re: HOW TO: Retrofit an RNS510 Sat Nav System.
Post by: Exonian on 04 October 2011, 15:56
Ah, here we have another problem! DAB can't be ordered with the RNS 510 but the SEAT Media System 2.2 has bluetooth and DAB as standard (RNS 315). There are so many anomalies with the head units and all of them can work with all models with a bit of coding but can't actually be ordered with all models in this country if you follow me. In Germany you can probably order one of about half a dozen headunits!
I think that is why your car perhaps doesn't have bluetooth, as I'm not sure you can spec bluetooth and DAB together (plus Dynaudio) as there are only so many connections on the back of the unit.

Unfortunately the RNS 315 doesn't have the big hard drive that the RNS 510 has and from memory takes it's stuff from an SD card or CD/DVD. I'm not sure it can play movies.

There are OEM looking units from some of the big brands that have nearly all of the features of the RNS 510 plus maybe bluetooth built in but I'm not sure if they will have the DAB. It's so hard to keep up with this stuff as there's new things being introduced every couple of months. There are also a lot of Chinese OEM looking head units that have all sorts of features.

You can get rips of the latest maps and speed camera POIs online for not much money.

Hi,

Very interesting thread.  I have a few questions which I hope someone can help me with
I have a RNS510c which I removed from my old mark 5 to go into my brand new mk6 Golf Bluemotion Match.
The car has OPS (optical parking sensors) which gives me a screen on the stereo unit.  If I swap out the stereo will I lose this function ?  Its not a parking camera just for clarification.  I know that the new stereo has DAB which I am not too bothered about which I will lose but what about the bluetooth functionallity ?  Is this a module on the back of the stereo or is it built into the stereo.
The other question is with regards to the MDI thats on the car.  Will this work with the RNS510c after the swap out ?

Thanks..>Dub

Your parking sensors will work with your RNS510 on screen.
The bluetooth is an external unit and not part of the head unit so yes that will work.
Yes the MDI will work fine.

*You will need the car coded (vag.com) to have the full functions of the RNS510 working.

Thanks for the update.  It took me all of 15 mins to tear out the old one and put the new one in and it does work fine.
The major concern that I had was the OPS on screen and there was no problems with that.
Just need to find someone in the midlands to do the vag com element and its all good to go.
Quick question, does the RNS play ISO files and in specfic, those that have been copied on USB connected via the MDI ?

It should work but there may be some features, like MFD nav directions, which don't work. Where are you located? Perhaps you can find someone local with VAG COM to code everything up correctly?

Went out for a quick run around town and it all seems good, directions to the local hospital were correct. Sound is good, radion spot on and full postcode search works fine. Didn't try the voice control as I dont have bluetooth phone control so I wont have a mic in the car so no point trying. The only thing i can see that doesn't work is the mfd display. If I hadn't read that on here i wouldn't have known about it anyway so for all I know I am missing more but I dont actually know what!!!!!. My BMW doesn't have anything similar so I'm not going to miss it.

To say I am delighted is an understatement alright!!!!

Hi Rob and welcome.

I bought mine off a guy on here (N13KKF) as quite a few have either from Nick or a couple of the other guys who used to get these units.

Don't see many on here these days unless its someone who is trading their car in and returning it to stock and selling their mods.

Hi guys

Yes, this is an old thread, and yes this is my first post ... but I'd appreciate a bit of help if poss as I'm now stuck.

I have a 2010 B6 Passat that shipped with the RNS 510.  Sat nav went down a few weeks ago and I figured it was a faulty GPS antenna.  Found this thread and eventually ordered a replacement.  Installed it just now using the steps illustrated here but my RNS 510 only finds 1-4 satellites (out of 12) max.  Drove around for a bit and no change.  It still thinks I'm in Germany!

The car has a shark fin which I assume houses the antenna and MUST now be the one that needs replacing?  Really don't fancy taking the roof lining etc apart.  Or is there another fix?

Thanks

GMADS

How far have you driven round? It took around 5-6 miles before mine knew where it was.
Title: Re: HOW TO: Retrofit an RNS510 Sat Nav System.
Post by: GMADS on 19 February 2015, 15:01
About 10 miles.

Had split screen nav on so I could keep track of the satellites, hence knowing they varied between 1-4 throughout.

The original antenna lead I removed was heavily insulated and it looked like part of it was fixed to a plate behind the head unit.  Didn't want to take the climate control stuff out to take a proper look.  The lead was also mighty hard to take out - had to use pliers.  The one I've fitted only goes on hand tight.

Drove around this morning with the antenna sat ON the dash.  Picked up 7 satellites and GPS was back on form.  I guess there is some metal around the central air vents breaking the signal when it's tucked inside.

At least some kind of progress is being made.
