Title: 2.0 8v - 1.8 T 20v conversion
Post by: dai-cymru on 09 December 2008, 12:35
Well doesnt look like there are any buyers for the golf and after a miss hap with some tarmac me and my motorbike i was thinking my new toy could be my golf converted to turbo, so first off let me say it's no going to be a BAM engine as there rare as fook and the ones that do come up are usually just engines not g/box engine loom etc, rhyso checked with rtec for me on sunday and they can remap and know someone who can deimob ECU. however i have a few issues

1, I think i have electronic throttle on my 2.0 but most of the engines for sale are agu and therefore cable throttle
2, Will the excisting Gear lever linkage match up with the turbo box

expect i will find more issues but thats it for now,

Someone at AMD just had his 1.4 converted to 20v turbo and the bill came to 4k. Have you already fitted better suspension and brakes etc?

i do like my seats but i can't pass up a bargain now can I?    plus the front Recaro's are much more supportive than the vw sport seats

strangely the only difference i can see with the rears is having Recaro stitched into them

You could possibly get 160 out of that engine with those mods I listed.  And with a couple of 100 kg's stripped out, you'd be surprised how quickly you could go round a circuit.  I'm talking lower dash, carpets, trim, sound deadening, headlining, lightweight bucket seat in etc..  The power, & the way it's delivered would probably be more usable than my current car for coming out of tight hairpins etc.  ;)  The straights aren't usually that long, you know.  :)

You could (if you have standard suspension on your 2.0ltr) swap the suspension over so you'll e a touch lower.

You'd probably get more for it that way, but I was just thinking whole car minus interior plus a snail lump, for a track project.  I don't need climate, carpets, lower dash etc, just a steering wheel, pedals & heater maybe!!  :D

doh took a run out in the turbo today and the fecking thing broke down  managed to get it restarted but wouldnt rev above a 1000rpm without cutting out   so on the hard shoulder of the dual carriage way i was trying various things and thought mmm wonder if it's the maf so unplugged it and low and behold it would rev fine, so plugged it back in and it wouldnt rev again so thought yippe just a maf fault, however not that it matters much but the asr warning light is now on and has stayed on,

so yesterday the fun began

here's the team

Dai - Chief Fitter
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y276/Rhyso/IMG_1293.jpg)

Bob - Sparky
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y276/Rhyso/IMG_1294.jpg)

Me - Interior Removal
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y276/Rhyso/IMG_1295.jpg)

Removed the bonnet, doors and boot hatch and rear seats and then rolled the car into the garage

First couple of hours went really well - engine stripping started approx 3pm and by 5.30pm is was pretty much ready to come out and then of course the problems started.....................

Driver side drive shaft didn't want to come off
Then the bolts holding the turbo to the exhaust were on proper tight
Then there was issues with the jack..........

But by 9.30pm, after stopping for several cups of tea and sauasge and chips and trying to keep warm as from 6pm onwards we were working in sub-zero temperatures out came the engine!!

Engine out!

More fun continues on Monday with the removal of the 2.0 engine but i'm back in work so its down to Dave and Bob to get it sorted

Didn't see you getting stuck in either mate, scared of touching all things petrol;)

urm i did actually   helped out near the end when dropping the engine out

as it says in the thread i'm the interior specialist   besides 3 people working on the engine removal just leads to confusion and at some points only one person can work on it

I guess the interior man is very useful when removing the engine! ;)

Just pulling your leg!

i know

more useful than a fitter removing interior trim eh Dai  :lipsrsealed:
