Mine was being built this week too.  I'm just wondering where the notification text comes from - dealer or VW?

Exciting times.... I was obsessed with checking the app. Think it was about 1 month between the stage you are at to stage 7.

Mine is being delivered on Thursday.

Enjoy

The text came via the My VW tracking system. Strangely is was originally saying build week commencing 12th March then leapt to 'in transit' with a text this morning! So it's coming about a month earlier than originally expected. I'm going to have to see what can be done about returning current personal lease car a bit early (as end date is officially 11th May), or I may ask VW dealer to hang onto the GTI for a while - although not sure I want my new car hanging around a dealer storage area for an extra month!!

Its from VW - You'll need to register and have your order number that the dealer gave you - and then just tick all the relevant boxes.  The "My VW" app does the same.

Cheers.  Don't think that service is available here in Aus: "This app is incompatible with all of your devices".

Ditto for my GTI order, the app was still showing a build week of 12/03/18 early yesterday then suddenly jumped to 'in transit'

I checked the order status with VW live chat and they confirmed my car was at the port of exit and cleared to ship. I'm now hopeful of a fairly seamless swap over as my GTD lease is up on the 23rd

I walked into my local dealer last weekend to look at a used GTi, but came away having ordered a brand new one.  One of those weird situations whereby buying brand new was actually cheaper.

It was already in the channel so it left the factory beginning of last week and is now sitting in Emden dock waiting for a boat.  It’s a shame the app doesn’t give you the same detail the Volkswagen bods on the website chat have access to.

I’m genuinely excited.

That's lovely and quick..
What spec did you go for? I did think about getting something already made but I'd have had to compromise on options.

Same here, mine same build week (12th March) also skipped straight to “in transit”. Also says on average 3 weeks from leaving factory to arriving at the dealer.

Yeah I'm not sure I could have waited through the full build process

I have gone for a 3 door in deep black pearl, titan black jacara, with the standard Parker Alloys (Brecia are my favourite but no cars in the channel had them).  The only extra I have plumbed for is the DSG Auto Box.  I did think about going for a manual with the Performance Pack which is technically slightly cheaper than going for a DSG.  To be honest I could have afforded both if I had got the finance on my current car over 4 years instead of 5, but as it stands I owe £2000 in finance which reduced the equity I had to put down on the Golf.  Live and learn and all that.

The other option I had was the the same spec but in white with the Seville alloys, but I wasn't sure about the look of the alloys and they didn't have a car in the show room with them on so I played it a bit safe.

To be honest I was really impressed with the standard equipment you get on the GTi.

I'm genuinely levitating with excitement though!  Its the first brand new car I have ever bought.  Hopefully it will get shipped this week.

Nice choice, the Dynaudio was non negotiable for me and none of their stock cars get it fitted it seems.
What's the GTi replacing?
Title: Re: Your car has been built and has now left the factory
Post by: mcmaddy on 05 March 2018, 10:26
Dynaudio is a factory fitted option so if a car leaves the factory and doesn't have it you won't get it added by a dealer to a stock car.

The GTi they had in the showroom had the Dynaudio fitted and I have to say it was really impressive.  I liked the depth of sound it provided.  It would be nice to plum for the premium extras like that

So what spec have you gone for, and how far through the process are you?

My current car is a BMW 335i which I have part exchanged for the golf.  Its a lovely car to drive (sound of the 6 cylinder engine is awesome), and is fast, but its not what I would call fun.  Plus its by far the most unreliable car I have owned which is the main reason for getting shot.  If I hadn't extended the BMW warranty I would be quite literally bankrupt.

I've gone for the 3dr PP in Pure White, manual, tinted windows and Dynaudio. Everything else standard.

I'm big into my audio and as you say it seems to be worth the upgrade especially when a lot of the nicer speaker kits for other cars are costing over 2x what VW charge. IMO you'll never again be so bothered if your drive home takes an extra 20 minutes as you'll have been listening with a smile on your face.

Ordered 12th Feb, they said est mid June. Already got confirmed build week 26/3 so thinking their estimate was a little slow, I'm reckoning on having it for 1/5.

Just got off “live chat” mine is at the exit port awaiting shipping. It can take up to two weeks to get on a ship, then up to 10 days to get to the dealer. Realistically 3-4 weeks away then.

Nice   You have definitely made the right decision going with the dynaudio system if your into audio.  Especially when its all nicely professionally fitted at the factory.

Fingers crossed its sooner rather than later

I'm kind of hoping mine doesn't spend the full two weeks at the port.  Its been there since last Wednesday.  I was sad and bored enough to start looking at shipping schedules.  Apparently Volkswagen do deliver cars to the port of Tyne which is local to me, and there is a boat due in from Emden on Thursday so I'm hoping it might be on that.  Apparently all the logistics is handled by Nissan.

Excellent   Your lucky your car is going to the port nearest to your dealer.  For some reason mine isn't.  Guess it just depends on schedules.

I have identified a couple of ships heading to Emden that might have a chance of picking my car up so going to keep an eye on those :)

The VW Live chat was very forthcoming with all the info and then I used a marine tracker to see where the ship was and that it had left on the correct day.  My last new car came from America - plenty of time to track the ship.

Wow....this was quick.
My new GTI was only ordered by my dealer on Tuesday this week (6/3/18). It the very next day went to Stage 2 (with the factory) and this morning I got the email to say it had gone to stage 3 (Build week Confirmed) and it's confirmed at BW 16/4/18.

If I add approx 4-5 weeks onto that for shipping etc. that would only be about 10-11 weeks from order. My dealer told me to expect around 16-20 weeks (not that I'm in any real hurry).

For those of you who had BW 12/03/18 and were pleased with having your car in Emden this week (a number of us), the good news is that the ship 'Malacca Highway' is en route to Sheerness for those of us in the south and the ship 'City of Paris' is en route to Grimsby for those of you in the north.

Well mine is definitely not on the city of Paris.  Just been on the web chat.  Come to the conclusion my car is what the port staff are using to get the bacon sandwiches.

It will have been there two weeks on Wednesday.  Not sure what the next possible shipping opportunity might be.

Do you know for certain it's going to Grimsby? Seems odd because if your dealer is Lookers at Silverlink then it'll definitely be going to Port of Tyne and not Grimsby. When I bought my gti from Lookers Northallerton it went to Port of Tyne.

That’s what the web chat rep told me when I asked which port.  Next time I’m on I will ask again and if I get the same answer I will query it.  Did seem weird though.

Its on the City of Amsterdam which left Emden at 15:00 yesterday and is currently just off the English coast.  Due in Grimsby around 11:00 this morning

The web chat person couldn't tell me why it was going to Grimsby rather than the Tyne, but said it would be put on a transporter to my local dealer.

Unless VW have changed the process the dealer is the one who normally puts the request in for transport. Suppose it doesn't really matter as long as your car turns up correctly.

Nada!  I've emailed the dealer on Thursday about swapping the number plate and had no response.  Was kind of hoping that collection would be this week (the step 6 SMS arrived today). Can't wait for it to arrive.... The 1.5 Diesel is now being put under enormous strain at junctions....  No point handing it over with anything more than the legal minimum on the tyres....

Wow cool thats not long at all especially when you factor in a weekend in the middle.  The guy at my dealership reckons its usually between 7-10 days on average.

The app has been pretty accurate for me, but email notification seems to be the only reliable option.  SMS seems to just come in randomly or not at all.

My local dealer is around 160 miles away from the port, but I think the waiting time will be down to how long it takes to get assigned a transporter.  Once its on there its still only a couple of hours away.

I'm at least pretty confident I will have it for easter

I've come to the conclusion my car simply likes to spend time in ports.  It sat for two weeks in Emden, and has now been in Grimsby for a 7 days!  Must like the sea air.

collection day fail - a huge inclusion in the paint on the edge of the rear valance thing + they've over-tightened the front plate causing it to stress fracture...

Will have another go at the end of the week :-(

It just shows its worth having. good look round the car before driving off.  Even when the car is fresh off the boat.  Hope it gets sorted quickly (but properly).

Dealer rang about an hour ago to say my car was being delivered on Friday which is both great and disappointing as they need two full days to get everything ready so it won't be available until Tuesday.  That also means my car will have basically sat in Grimsby for the thick end of two weeks!

It is a bit bizarre - but theres not many dealers, and they arrive in their hundreds on the ship, so its bound to happen more than you'd think it would.

They don't need 2 full days to do a prep. It can be done in a couple of hours if need be. I still can't fathom out why your car didn't get delivered to port of Tyne.

Well I'm finally booked in to pick mine up on Thursday afternoon.  They could have it ready tomorrow, but it would have made the whole thing a massive unenjoyable rush.  After the issues damianmkv has had I want have plenty of time to look the car over.  I have taken a half day off work which also leads nicely into the easter break.

The whole process has taken about 1 month from ordering the car.  It was already in the channel and had literally just completed the build stage.  So in real terms it took a whole month to travel from the factory to my local dealer.

Can't wait!

Well got my car last Thursday, and to say I love it would be an understatement.  I just think its a fantastic all round car, and I'm particularly fond of the the Deep Pearl Black.

What wasn't brilliant was the whole collection process.  It was a pretty stressful miserable experience which was a shame being my first brand new car.  We had bought two cars from the same dealer on the same day, my Golf and a Polo SE for the wife.  First off were plonked straight in front of a desk to sign loads of paperwork (not as much as a cuppa).  Then we were taken to our cars and then left as another customer was coming in (who it later turned out was 3 hours early!).  Both cars were wedged into a couple spaces next to each other which made it extremely difficult to have a good look round them.  The level of detail and valet was atrocious.  The interior was covered with finger prints, and the exterior had clearly just been given a quick wash.  There was loads of residual water marks and dust.  I complained and they offered to re-do them this week, but to be honest I think I will be happier to sort them out myself.  They were supposed to both have a full tank of fuel, both and just under half.  Complained and sales guy took us to local shell garage with his fuel card.

I haven't had as much as a phone call since to ask if everything is alright.  Not impressed at all.

So far car has been perfect though .  Order tracker still says its just entered the UK though.

Car looks great ne0star. Shame about the collection experience not being what you were hoping for.

I personally prefer a low key collection - I wouldn’t want the ‘big reveal’ that some dealers do, with the gritty cover being dragged off the car. I like to be left alone to have a good look around the car - but to do that, you at least need to have sufficient space around the car to check everything’s OK. Hindsight’s a wonderful thing, but I think in your position, I’d at least have asked for yours and your wife’s cars to be moved into better space thst gave you enough room to check both cars over.

Whatever you do, don’t let the dealer re-valet either car - do it yourself. Chances are if the dealer does it, both will end up with swirly paintwork, which will be very obvious on Deep Black Pearl paintwork.

Put the delivery experience behind you and enjoy your car. Hope your wife is also enjoying the Polo .

Thats very poor service and quite surprising unless these are lease cars? - personally I would write to the dealer principal (not a phone call) and ask if this their standard procedure.

Then when you get the VW customer service satisfaction questionnaire you will be able to explain how disappointing the handover was.

Thanks for the feedback guys.  I'm actually starting to think it was a good thing they didn't put much effort into cleaning it lol.

To be honest I'm not sure what my expectations were, but I definitely thought it would have been a bit more customer orientated.  It was one of those situations whereby its over in the blink of an eye, and the next thing you know your sat back at home thinking 'hang on a minute that was a bit rubbish'.  It is the main Volkswagen dealer in the area we purchased the cars from though.

Wife loves the Polo.  I did feel a little bit sorry for her because my car has received all the attention, but the new Polo is a really nice car with a good level of kit as standard on the SE.  One nice bonus was the car was delivered with the optional £450 convenience pack which was never specified and we haven't paid for.  I even checked the paper work.

Was it Lookers at Silverlink? As said just wait for the customer feedback questionnaire and then tell the truth. The dealer will be marked down for such bad feedback and then if the dealer principal or sales manager has anything about then they'll ring you and ask why you gave such bad feedback. They'll sharp learn.

Glad you liike the car. It looks really nice, I'm hoping my white one looks as good. That experience does sound pretty rubbish so I'll be interested to see whether Caffyns in Brighton will do better than you got :(

Mine's now "in the UK" - how long did it take to get to your dealer from then? Hoping to have it in a week or so as long as my current lease provider will play ball.

Thanks  despite the whole collection experience I love the car.  I think the problem was the dealer just booked far too many collections in for one day.  They are basically trying that age old trick of getting as many signatures on dotted lines before financial year end.

With regards to the time it took to get to the dealer it was pretty much the full 10 days, but I seem to have been on the far end of the spectrum.  For most other folk its seems to sit between 3-7 days.  Comically enough the order tracking app still thinks its at the port in Grimsby.

Hopefully the weather will have cheered up by the time you collect.

Well had a bit of a surprise today. My new GTI (which according to the app and the VW website) is still supposed to be built next week (W/C 16/4/18), I've just had a email from the dealer to say not only is it built, but at the docks at status 38 - "Port of Exit - released".

Thinks it will most likely be with him by the end of the month. Considering I only ordered it on the 3rd March, that's only 6 weeks form order to build and delivery to the port of exit. Pretty impressive considering my first MK7 GTD back in 2013 took 23 weeks !

TBH, I'm not really bothered when it turns up, as it's not like the current GTD is a bad place to be, and weirdly not as excited this time as I was for the other 2 MK7's (familiarization maybe) ?

Ideally I'd like to collect it near the start of the month so I don't lose another months car tax (like I did when I foolishly let them tax my first GTD back in 2013 on the 29th September)  :(

Ahh, hadn't thought about that. At least it'll only be 2 weeks tax lost for me.

I'm pretty stoked to be honest. When I was about 8 my Dad got a mk2 GTi 16v in white. He didn't keep it long, but I loved it and have always wanted my own. Now I'm 33 I feel as though I deserve it, even though it still feels a bit naughty. I know the novelty will wear off sometime...

Getting nearer......new GTI is now at Grimsby  :)

Better start getting used to the much poorer fuel consumption. Now the warmer weather is here, my GTD has started once more getting some great MPG figures, and last night in my usual 16 miles commute home (busy motorway at approx 65 mph plus 5 miles of 50 mph "A" roads, then a tiny bit of town traffic), it got me 62.4 mpg (with an ambient temperature of 23°C). Can't see the GTI getting anywhere near that, but to be honest, I'd be happy if under the same conditions, the GTI got 40 ish (and delighted at 45 plus), Not sure if that is realistic in a GTI ?

If you drive that same route at a steady pace then you’d be getting 40+ minimum. I’ve managed 50 in my GTI before driving like a granny on a long run.

Yay - received this update today - unlikely to be able to collect until March sometime due to VT on my current car - anyone know how I can track which boat (I am just interested!) it will be on and the ongoing length of time it takes to deliver it to dealer
