Title: Free and easy map updates (usually).
Post by: Ceefeesh on 23 May 2020, 01:14
In this period of little movement due to Covid 19 I was looking for something to occupy some time. Maybe I am daft and I have succeeded in doing something elementary but my previous efforts to update my maps have failed. My 7.5 GTI has Discover media. It is nearly 2 years old. When I checked the sat nav version it was version  3GO919866BJ 2018, Version 8. A couple of years ago when I had a Mk 7 GT TDI I had tried to update my SD card from the website I couldn’t get it to work. I bought a new genuine VW card from eBay! Guess what? It didn’t work. Tonight, I looked on eBay for a new SD card - £37, Version 12.  I thought really? Might not work again. I  looked on line and found VW support free updates but they don’t really trumpet this as you can buy a new SD card from an official VW dealer! Very generous of them! I then searched on YouTube found one guide from a year ago and I tried to use this. I searched for the VW site as per YouTube directions, the VW site has changed but I followed the site suggestions. I took my SD card out of the car put it into a USB card reader connected to my computer and followed the VW app. It had me back up my maps to my PC then I started to download  Europe Zone 1 dated 11/7/19 as it suggested. After about 15 minutes the download crashed.  I started again and it downloaded the new version on to my SD card which I put back into SD card 2 as directed and it installed. It took me about 90 minutes to complete the process, using fibre broadband.  I now have 5NA919866AH 1410 ECE1 2020/21. I think this is Version 12. While I have had the new version confirmation in settings  I haven’t seen the difference as I haven’t driven it yet. However, the new version number in settings gives a satisfied glow, for now. Time will tell if it was worth it.  If you have a couple of hours to spare you too could have new maps, for free.

Here is the starting link from VW.

Let me know if you have got this software to work. 🤗

PS Also downloaded some radio station logos for my DAB radio the same way.

VW have done free map updates since the mk7 was introduced in 2012/13 so not sure why people are feeling the need to purchase new cards 🤷‍♂️. Two updates are released per year, May and November and it used to be free for three years at the outset. This changed to five not long after and now it's lifetime.

As mcmaddy says, the free updates have always been available, but the process has never been as easy and straightforward as it should be. Possible, yes, but you have to be fairly tech savvy, and patient, to succeed. VW have had a couple of goes at a user friendly method, but never quite got there.

It’s obviously worth having the latest map information, but unless you know a road has changed, or just opened, you’re unlikely to notice changes. I did find with one version that it tried to take me to my daughter’s house the wrong way round York! I reverted to the old version until the next release, which got it right again. None of the roads had changed, so they must tweak the algorithms as well as the map data.

I found the earlier VW steps of updating the maps via the internet were more complicated and I could not get them to work, buying a SD card was a work around. I am not sure how much VW dealers charge but they are currently for sale on eBay for £25 - £35. The number of sellers and feedback suggests there is strong demand  I thought my recent experience might encourage others to try updating for themselves as it is relatively straight forward. Still unsure how good the changes are though. Here is the You Tube link I started with but the VW process seems to have evolved since it was made.

I've never had any issues updating any VW sat nav. I don't use the crappy VW program thing just download, extract and away you go. Gap in the market if so many people are struggling to update but are willing to pay 25 to 35 quid for a new card. I should start a business and do them for half that

As mcmaddy said. Just don't use vw software.
Download from here https://webspecial.volkswagen.de/vwinfotainment/int/en/index/downloads/maps-download#/
then extract, copy to original sd card

I thought I'd give this a go but I see the last update from that site was July 2019. I'm sure a newer version was posted recently but can't find it.

Hi

The 11/7/19 is the file I used and the most recent I could find.  After installation the system information on the car shows it as EC 2020/21.

The date is shown as month/day/year, so 11/7/19 is 7th of November 2019.

US convention, I think, hence 911, which was 11th of September.

Well I’ve tried again and failed to update the map!

I’ve done everything as per instructions and it never works for me, it clearly isn’t designed for MacBook use

if you've got a Mac then you might be better off using the VW update program. I'm sure it does something different on Macs compared to Windows.

Hi

I used the Windows option but I saw there is a Mac version for the update too. The first time I tried it did crash but the second time it worked via the DiscoverCare app. On the previous version I could not get it to work no matter what I tried. Good luck.

I've just done this, thanks to all the posters above.

Car is a 19 reg, and was running Europe 1 (v8) SD card, ECE1 2018 version

I managed to fit the European countries bundle 1 on the factory SD card, so now it is version ECE AS 20/21.

It is worth this topic getting pinned to the mk7 page?

Hey. Not sure if this post from the other month might help:

https://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=286378.msg2619908#msg2619908

Seems like quite a few people are having issues with these updates so it's a shame VW can't give better and clearer instructions. I wouldn't recommending buying the SD card personally. You'd have to buy 1 or 2 every year whereas if you get it working yourself you can do it every time for free.

Ok sorted - VW program is the way to go with a Mac, Incredible slow even on a super fast connection

late at night is usually a good time. With the amount of people working at home I would think it may be slow at peak times. I often download mine during the night.

Pleased to hear you managed to get it sorted. Even with VW Discover Care its not an easy process.

Can I ask what date map you updated to?

I’ve tried this on my desktop, downloading it through VW’s program onto my SD Card reader and it’s saying ‘out of space’
Title: Re: Free and easy map updates (usually).
Post by: Ceefeesh on 09 June 2020, 19:43
Hi

If I am correct it needs 16gb of space. Normally there is a 32gb card in the slot which is sufficient. Is that what you have? You can right click on the SD card icon in Windows  on your PC (assuming it’s Windows) to see what space it has left.

sounds like you've downloaded the pro update which is 32gb instead of discover which is only 16gb

It definitely does mate, I’m beginning to wonder if my SD card already has the update on?

I downloaded the update off the VW website and it used ‘discover care’ to transfer it. All went fine until this

The error refers to backing up data. Isn't that it trying to store the existing content before copying the new?
Title: Re: Free and easy map updates (usually).
Post by: mcmaddy on 11 June 2020, 12:20
One of the reasons I just download direct. The Discover Care thing is useless. Are you supposed to save the existing data from the card before using Discover Care JV?

Cheers lads I’ll have a look again at it. The card is the one that came with the car.

Just a guess based on the alert, could be referring to a chosen backup location not having space, nothing to do with the SD card. I haven't got a card based nav to be able to check, so can't get to those screens in the tool.

Appreciate you have said a thousand times that you don't like the VW software but it has worked perfectly for me. It's so easy to use, it filters the options based on your car model, tells you about the file format required etc. Easy.

it's not me having the bother JV but I've always just used the direct method. I know others like the Discover Care thing 👍

Interestingly when I look at Discover Care, it is telling me the latest version for Discover Pro is 184 and doesn't show 187.
I thought Discover Care was an App that once downloaded would keep up to date, it it necessary to download it again each time there is a map update?

Thought I would post an update on this thread.

When I opened my laptop today there was a message from the VW 'Discover-Care' App saying that a new update was available, clicked on the link inserted SD card and downloaded the update, very easy to do although time consuming due to the large file size.

Quite impressed with Discover-Care which I haven't been in the past.

Did mine for the first time this afternoon. Download took a while, but unzipped, maps onto storage card, back into the car, done. Was a doddle.

After following this, and then even commenting about how DiscoverCare was not as good as it should be, I decided to give it another chance. Worked like a charm! I’ve always done it myself, the backup, download, unzip and load onto the card. I’ve never had any trouble doing that, but the difference with the DiscoverCare app is the you just select it, insert your Nav card and leave it to get on with the whole thing. I had my doubts, but, as said, it just did the job.

Thanks VW! 😊
