Knackered or not?
« on: 31 May 2003, 01:25 »
  ???

The Girlfriend was driving our Mk2 gti 8v (big mistake i know!) she was driving it up the road when the oil buzzer and temp light came on she pulled over, parked and left the car, it turns out that the oil was in the water system and what was left of the oil was normal colour but watery (no gunge) - think this might be the head gaskett but was wondering if i am right or way off and it could be something completely different.  As i am no mechanic! i was wondering if it was worth trying to rebuild the engine as i am quite good with the hands .  Any advice would be appreciated - cheers guys!

DOH!!! kinda sounds like the head gasket to me. Although it is a relatively easy job (1 1/2 days at the most) I wouldn't recommend doing it if you are not sure!! There are a lot of silly little things to consider when putting the head back on and hooking everything up that if you overlook could cause carnage.
It should cost no more than ?250+gasket set to get put right by a garage.  To be honest i have done enough head gaskets in my time and its saves on effort and knuckles to get someone else to do it.

Don't ignore where your cars evolved from. Aircooled is COOL!!

Although its a good chance its the head gasket, it could be the oil cooler.

Its quite common on older cars, especially when the coolant isn't changed often enough.

Good luck.
