Tyres for Golf Mk2 16V
« on: 05 June 2003, 19:28 »
I need to chage the tyres on my Mk2 16V. They are currently 185/55/15.

Would it make much difference if I changed the size to 195/50/15 as the are quite cheaper than the equivalent 185/55/15 make of tyre?

Any suggestions on what make of tyre to go for?

I have a 16v too on 15" BBS and it runs great on 195/50/15.  I'm pretty sure the tyre size you have is original, but as you say expensive.  The rolling diameter of your wheels will be slightly different, but not so as you notice (fractionally incorrect speedo? on 50 profile).  Lower proflie and slightly wider tyres should improve cornering slightly.  Only thing is I'd try not to mix sizes on the car and deffinitely not on the same axle.

Hello John16

Just thought I would ask what tyre pressure's you are running with those 195's. The reason I ask is because I have the same size and they always look half flat.

Cheers

Unless the car is loaded up I use the same pressures as recommended inside the fuel filler cap (although I admit these are for the 185/55/15s).  Pretty sure this is 2.2 bar front and 2 bar rear.  At these pressures, the car is generally used 1 or 2 up with little luggage.

I recently had to replace my Pirelli P6000's on my golf 16V and got quotes of ?90 quid each wheel to get them done but I thought that was expensive so looked on the internet, I came across a site that sells top brand tyres cheaper and managed to get the Pirelli's for ?53 quid each, my local tyre centre fitted and balanced them for free as I take the work vans in there. The site if your interested is www.mytyres.net
